Welcome To Rockford High School

A Message to Student-Athletes, Parents & Fans

A student’s education does not end at the conclusion of the school day if they are involved in extra-curricular activities. Some values, in fact, can be better learned through the involvement in activities such as drama, music, and athletics, rather than in the classroom. Values such as fair-ness, caring, responsibility, and respect are the foundations of sports-manship. The focus of high school athletics should be on the learning of these lifelong values. In order for these principles to be taught, it is criti-cal that everyone – players, coaches, parents, and fans – behaves in a sportsman-like manner. Unfortunately, the failure on the part of even one of these groups can undermine the efforts of others. Some individuals call the disrespect shown by taunting and trash talking as just “a part of the game.” If schools and communities are to justify programs, they must unite to let students, student-athletes, parents, spectators and communities know that disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated in our athletic programs.“Sportsmanship is defined as those qualities of behavior which are char-acterized by generosity and genuine concern for others.” That means a concern for everyone, including oppos-ing teams, coaches, fans, and officials.

To our parents: Please fill the stands in support of your sons and daughters, while realizing that high school athletics are a form of education, and that the score is not nearly as important as the lessons learned.

To our fans: Please display a positive attitude at all times, doing your best to discourage cheers that taunt opposing teams, fans, and officials – cheers that distract from the focus of high school athletics.

To our athletes: Remember that you volunteered to be a part of Rock-ford High School athletics, and that all of your actions are a reflection on yourself, your team, your school, and the whole community. Please conduct yourself in a manner that brings honor and pride to the com-munity of Rockford.

And to everyone: Enjoy the game and remember – “Good Sports are Winners!”

MiSSiON STATEMENTThe “Champions of Character” initiative will create an environment in which every student-ath-lete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

ViSiON STATEMENTThe “Champions of Character” initiative, through awareness, education and community involve-ment, will continue to develop an atmosphere of integrity in sport.

OBjECTiVES• To encourage all institutions to champion character development in all sports programs.

• To establish character development expectations for student-athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators involved in intercollegiate athletics.

• To develop standards of accountability for all student-athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators so that all will take responsibility for their actions.

• To implement a program of assessment and accountability of the “Champions of Character” initiative at all institutions.

• To initiate a community outreach program with a character development emphasis.

• To develop community service outreach opportunities.

• To establish a Character Center that will bring national attention to effect charter traits, educate people on character principles and develop initiatives for character education.

POLiCiES AND PROCEDuRES FOR HOME CONTESTSPlease adhere to the following policies & procedures to make

RHS athletic events an enjoyable experience for everyone:

1. All Rockford High School facilities and properties are smoke-free. Smoking is not permitted on school grounds. There is a fine associated with the violation of this state and board policy.

2. All spectators are asked to be in their seats during the course of the game, unless they are at the concession stand or using the restrooms. Running around during contests is not permitted. No fans are

allowed on any of the courts or playing fields. 3. A “No-Checkout” policy will be enforced at the entrance. Spectators leaving the game will have to pay

a full admission price to re-enter. 4. The ticket gate/admission table will normally be open until the end of each varsity game. Fans should

not plan on being admitted free of charge after half-time. 5. The posting of any signs or banners must be approved by RHS administration. 6. Musical instruments, megaphones, whistles, or other noise-making devises are not permitted. 7. Spectators are to refrain from throwing anything down on the playing fields, courts or pool deck. 8. During football games, please do not stand in the walkway that separates the home bleacher section. If you wish to stand, there is ample room along the fence of the north berm. 9. Please cooperate by following rules regarding food and beverages at events located in the gymnasiums

and natatorium. Water and popcorn are the only items allowed in the gymnasium, and food/bever-ages are not allowed on the pool deck.

10. Good sportsmanship is everyone’s responsibility. The visiting team, coaches, and officials are all

guests of Rockford High School. We ask that they be treated in a courteous manner at all times. Thanks for your cooperation! RHS Athletic Department

Rockford Sports Boosters was established to stimulate and encourage interest among student athletes, par-ents and the community in high school and middle school athletics. We assist in the funding of projects and purchasing equipment that promote the enrichment of Rockford Athletic Programs.

Your continued support of our concession stands, fund raising activities, becoming a booster patron and/or placing a business ad in the Sports Program helps provide us with the financial resources to give back to our athletes. In years past we have purchased approximately $50,000 of equipment and training needs for our athletes and sports teams annually. We also provide needed funding into the coaches activity funds.

The Rockford Sports Boosters meet every third Monday of every month at 7:30 in the LGI room at the high school. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend and be part of the excitement of Rockford Ram Athletics.

WATER POLO – Nick Mansfield

As a sophomore, Nick Mansfield led the Rockford High School Men’s Water Polo team to an upset victory in the state championship finals, beginning a “straight flush” string of five straight state championships (2003-2007). He went on to earn All-American status in both his junior and senior years, 2004 and 2005, graduating with 389 goals, a feat which still stands as a Rockford record. Also, coaches statewide honored Nick his senior year with both the state’s Player of the Year and the Most Valuable Player awards. In its December 12, 2005, edition, Sports Illustrated recognized Mansfield as one of its honored “Faces in the Crowd”. Nick went on to play two years for the United State Naval Academy before transferring to the University of Michigan, where he was All- Big Ten for two years, including being named Big Ten Most Valuable Player in the fall of 2010. Nick graduated from the U of M this past spring with a bachelor’s of science in Financial Math and Risk Management.

Women’s Varsity Swimming & Diving – Sami jordan

Sami Jordan was a 2004 graduate from Rockford. While at Rockford she was one of the most decorated swimmers to ever come out of the program. In high school Sami was awarded All-American, All-State, and All Conference. She earned All-State honors 8 times. Sami was state champion twice in the 100 Backstroke. She held 6 varsity records and is still holds 3 records. Sami was known as someone who refused to lose, and she proved it time and time again. She was awarded MVP her Junior and Senior years. Sami helped lead the Rams to 4 conference champion-ships and 4 top 10 state finishes.

Sami continued her swimming career at Bowling Green University. She was one of their top sprint-ers and is still listed in their overall top ten performances in 100 Back, 200 Back, 50 Free and she currently is part of the record setting 400 Free Relays. She also qualified for the U.S. Open while at Bowling Green. She graduated with a degree in Sport Management Enterprise.

Sami is currently working as the Marketing and Membership Director at Blythefield Country Club. She is also the Aquatics Director and Head Coach at BCC and just started helping coach with the Rockford Age Group program, the Riptide.

We are proud to recognize Sami Jordan as the Women’s Varsity Swim Team’s Ram to Remember.
