COLLEGE BOUND?COLLEGE BOUND?

Middlesex County College will have an information table set up in the Main Library on July 3 for prospective students. Barbara Gross will be available during the hours of 12-3 to answer questions and distribute brochures.

"How can I possibly choose?" you ask when you realize that there are over 1,500 colleges in the U.S. To help the college-bound, the library collects individual N.Y. and N.J. college catalogs, as well as selected issues of the larger colleges. In addition, we have up-to-date college handbooks that contain profiles of all the accredited colleges in the United States. To address financial concerns we have information about getting a grant from the state or federal government as well as applications for this aid.

Berger, Gilda. The New Drug Epidemic. N.Y. Franklin Watts, 1990.Crack, a relatively inexpensive white powdery substance made from cocaine, may give the biggest 'boost' of all. It is also highly addictive and deadly. Even a single use can cause coma or death. It has turned the lives of many others into a living hell.

A wide array of over-the-counter tonics, lotions and pills are available to make us feel better and erase the discomfort of daily living. Drinking certain brands of soda, the ads say, will bring us friendship and success in life. Coffee gets us going in the morning. Smiling young people are pictured smoking cigarettes and seem none the worse for it.

We are a culture used to 'taking something' for relief, for pleasure, for fun, for escape. Addiction is a major social problem. We have just added a new magazine to our collection, ADDICTION AND RECOVERY, which stresses an important concept! Recovery is possible For all people, whether they are addicted to alcohol or some other substance.

The following books in our collection discuss the journey of recovery, and the work which must be done to keep us moving in the right direction.

Alcohol Anonymous Groups of N.J., Inc. will be visiting the Main Library one evening during. August to discusss alcoholism and the A.A. program. Check local newspapers during August for the date and time.

Recently the Bookmobile has been involved in some new and interesting services to the community.

An invitation was accepted by Jane Jennings, Bookmobile Coordinator, to the Spring meeting of the NJLA (of which the Edison Library Bookmobile is a member) in Long Branch so that people who were interested could tour our new bookmobile and ask questions of the staff. A display was set up outside the bookmobile to show the services available to patrons. Some of the library administrators had never seen a bookmobile. This gave Edison the rare opportunity to promote this unique service. Many questions were asked and answered to the satisfaction of all.

The next adventure was our visit with Lindeneau School. This was the first time that classes had come out to visit us. Four classes came and the children got the chance to see the inside of the Bookmobile. The Summer Reading Program and the functions performed by the bookmobile staff were explained to the children. The children asked some great questions such as "Why don't the books fall off the shelf?", and "How many books do you carry?". The favorite question was "When you get gas can you fit under the roof at the Shell gas station?"

The last adventure consisted of our participation in "Say No To Drugs Day", where a film on anti-drugs was shown and an Open House was held. A lot of nice people attended and once again a lot of questions were asked and answered.

These events were in addition to the regular stop schedule plus serving a "Dessert Day" to the residents of Edison Estates Rehab & Convalescent Home. The goal of the Bookmobile staff is to reach out in every way possible to serve the residents of Edison who need the services of the Bookmobile.

By Penny Vellucci Children's Librarian

Can you believe it? Summer is finally here. What a great time for children! A time of fun and frolic! As you spend more of your time outdoors, take a minute or two to look and listen and you are sure to hear the chirping of birds, the quacking of ducks, and the honking of geese. If you go camping in the woods, you may even hear the the hooting of an owl! Wherever you spend your time, as you gaze into the sky and see the birds flying maybe you'll wish you could join them in flight. Wouldn't that be something!

Have you ever wondered how it is that birds can fly? Feathers are an important part of the answer to that question. Feathers areso amazingly well purposes. One of the the bird cool the weather gets purpose is to give boy) an
