There is such a thing as “good cholesterol!” The cholesterol we commonly hear about is low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the bad kind that builds up as plaque in your arteries and can eventually cut off blood flow, leading to heart attacks or strokes. LDL cholesterol is found in foods high in saturated fat.

“Good cholesterol” is high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. HDL cholesterol reduces the amount of excess LDL and plaque in your arteries and returns it to your liver for processing, protecting against heart attacks. How can you boost your HDL levels within your diet? You guessed it — eat more plant-based foods and cut the fat.

Your goal should be to keep your HDL cholesterol above 60 mg/dL and your LDL cholesterol below 100 mg/dL.
