FOREVER FASHIONABLE

A move to Chelsea Galleries sees you following in the footsteps of some of Britain’s most famous writers and artists. Jonathan Swift, Thomas Carlyle and Leigh Hunt, Oscar Wilde, Rex Whistler, Walter Sickhert, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and Sir Alfred Munnings all lived and worked in Chelsea.

Murals on the neighbouring Chelsea Old Town Hall, next to Chelsea Galleries, portray the area’s close links with the arts, literature and science. These have witnessed hundreds of celebrity weddings.

In fact Chelsea Galleries, with its rare Dutch gable façade, was once a centre for Chelsea’s artistic community. It was also a home to the Chelsea Arts Club and the

Chelsea Art School before its conversion into a gallery in 1905 and subsequent rebuilding in 1924 – the foundation stone was laid by Augustus John. Rex Whistler, Eric Gill, Spencer Gore and Jacob Epstein showcased their early works at the new building’s small exhibition space and Duke Ellington even recorded here.

Chelsea’s artistic nature leant itself readily to Swinging London in the 1960s, epitomised by the King’s Road and iconic shops like Granny Takes a Trip and The Sweet Shop. Models such as Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton – The Shrimp – became ever associated with it.

So too did the fashion designer Mary Quant, whose husband Alexander Plunket-Greene had a well known neighbourhood restaurant.Politicians have also enjoyed Chelsea and its proximity to Parliament; the most famous being Margaret Thatcher, who began her married life in nearby Swan Court and was living on the other side of Flood Street when she was elected Britain’s first woman prime minister. To this day the area remains the home of a wealth of celebrities and other distinguished figures.

Living in Chelsea has many advantages - the King’s Road has a wide variety of smart and attractive shops. Whether it’s the famous Peter Jones Department store, the exclusive Partridge’s grocery on Duke of York Square or the handy Waitrose and Marks & Spencer, you don’t have to travel far for anything. The avant guard Royal Court theatre is on Sloane Square and the West End, with all it has to offer, just fifteen minutes or so away.

For dining there’s the renowned Gordon Ramsay’s, as well as the Bluebird restaurant, Zianni’s, the Cheyne Walk Brasserie and many, many more. Friendly neighbourhood pubs and bars abound.

Nearby Hyde Park is perfect for all types of outdoor activities, from tennis and jogging to boating and horse riding.

Chelsea Galleries is an imaginative development of four exclusive three storey, three bedroom townhouses and three apartments including a stunning duplex. Each has a spacious kitchen and dining area, study and utility room.

CHELSEA:

FOREVER CONVENIENT

All master bedrooms have ensuite facilities.

The Bohemian, artistic history of the area and the building itself is reflected in the stylish specification. Ultra modern and streamlined appliances, sleek bathroom fittings and wooden parquet floors provide the perfect canvas for individual interior design.

As benefits any artist’s home, our architects have maximised the use of light to create open and inviting spaces that celebrate life; the modern sweep of the roof and the choice of building materials offer a sensitive and intelligent counterpoint to the history of the surrounding buildings.
