o Public Officer – Jenny Gleadall, being the President, will assume the role of the Public Officer.

Jenny thanked Susan for her assistance. Principal’s Report Susan Bridge was invited to share her report.

o Presentation Day – to be held on Thursday 9 December at Sydney Opera House. Susan asked all members who are interested in attending to purchase the tickets through the school, and note that they are COGA members at the time of purchase to ensure the COGA members can all sit together in a specially marked section.

o Recent Project – CGHS P&C has completed the $400K COLA (covered outdoor learning area), transforming the old tennis courts.

o Recent Project – the Vickers Oval has been resurfaced and transformed; its white picket fence makes it a very distinct landmark in the area.

o Recent Project – Performing and Creative Arts girls got involved with Shave for a Cure and raised over $40K. 2014 is the 5th year of involvement by the school, and an award was handed out to Susan at Parliament House.

o Susan provided an update on the Social Justice Group, the Green Team which supports the environment of the school by installing a filtered water system for the girls to refill their water bottles, the Gardening Club, the Anime Club, Cheltenham Sisters of Battle who play online Warcraft, the Socratic Society, Peer Support, High Resolves (for Year 8, 9 and 10 students developing student leadership programmes), the Student Representative Council, and the Prefects who ran the Rainbow Diversity Week at school to recognise the diverse community that is Cheltenham.

o Susan reported on the school’s recent Senior Leadership Retreat – 31/7 and 1/8 – a group of students were selected to attend, with a view to the development of student leadership skills.

General Business The floor was invited to discuss general business.

o Cheltenham Rose – Pip and Jenny have been closely liaising with Swanes (Finbarr) to rebadge a rose for the CGHS 60th Anniversary in 2017. Roses will be available for a limited period from mid September to mid October 2017. All roses must be pre-ordered through COGA and orders are opened from today. Roses will be in small pots and price will be around $25 per plant. Jenny opened the discussion to the floor regarding the naming of the Cheltenham Rose, with a suggestion to call it the Bessie Mitchell Cheltenham Rose, which was wholeheartedly supported by all the members present. Philippa Medcalf undertook to research Bessie’s

COGA 2014 AGM Sunday 3 August 2014 Page 3

achievements so that we can include the information with each ordered rose.

o CGHS P&C Trivia Night – 23 August – COGA will be hosting one (1) table of 10, with Ros Nossiter and Margaret Taylor to coordinate the tickets. This year’s theme for Trivia Night is 1970s theme.

o Membership – discussion was held in relation to membership renewal; whether we should keep to an annual membership or include an option for a longer length (5 years or more). Most of the members noted that an annual membership renewal is preferred so COGA can host an annual event.

o CGHS 60th Anniversary History Project – Lyn Langtry, school historian, was invited to speak. The school’s history project has commenced and is well underway. Lyn is currently researching through the archives in the library and working closely with Susan Bridge. Lyn noted recent news of former CGHS students who have achieved tremendous success in their fields: Beverley Dunn who won an Oscar, Hannah Purss who has won the Alice Springs Camel Cup again, and Christine Piper who has won the prestigious Australian Vogel Prize for her novel After Darkness.

o COGA Polo Shirt – Orders are opened to everyone. All enquiries can be made to COGA via email.

o CGHS P&C Trivia Night – A reminder to everyone that COGA will be hosting a table at the upcoming CGHS P&C Trivia Night (to be held on Saturday 23 August). The theme is “The 70’s”. All enquiries and interest to be made to Ros Nossiter.

o New Bank Account – Margaret Perry noted that COGA has been experiencing difficulties when depositing funds with the current financial institution. Margaret suggested that COGA opens a new account with a different bank. The members of the Executive Committee agreed with this suggestion, and it was resolved that Margaret will make arrangements to open the new account, and that the method of operation will require two (2) signatures to sign, as per the current arrangements

Close Jenny once again thanked everyone for attending. She then formally closed

the meeting at 3.20pm.

Cheltenham Old Girls' Association InePresident's Report

2013-14

After some years of struggling to keep the Cheltenham Old Girls' Association Inc alive, Ibelieve this year will show that we have turned the comer and can look forward to a morepositive future. Membership numbers are increasing gradually but we need still more and thiswill be more important as we approach 2017.

Our major achievement this year was the passing of two motions at our Special GeneralMeeting on Sunday 16 February, 2014 both of which will have ramifications for ourorganisation. Firstly we voted to change the objectives of the association to allow formeremployees of the school to become members. Academic, clerical, maintenance - I guess weall have fond memories of at least one member of staff and, like our colleagues at school, wemay wonder what has become of them as they, too, may wonder what has become of us.Now we all have the opportunity to find out.

Secondly, as Proper Officer, I am responsible for reporting annually to the Office of FairTraining in NSW. Through a series of misunderstandings this had not been done for someyears and when I was able to speak to them to sort this out, I discovered that our financialyear should formally end on November 30 each year. From a practical point of view (to saynothing of MYOB) this is unsatisfactory so our second motion in February was to regularisethe end of our financial year to June 30. We have now complied with all our legalrequirements.

Our website and Facebook pages have prospered this year and, while these resources arefreely available, we encourage people to become members and have no intention of raisingthe cost of membership. Membership gives one priority in all our endeavours and makes iteasier for those planning reunions as we are often able to put girls in touch with each other.

Our Teachers' Reunion day in February was an unqualified success despite the rain and thisis destined to be an annual event. Our thanks to Susan Bridge for allowing us to use theresources of the School. We had more teachers attending this year .and more girls, but notnearly enough of the later. The teachers always say "but where are the girls? We want tocatch up with them.". We have discovered that it doesn't matter if none of your teachersattend it is simply good to speak to any of them.

We have launched the COGA T-shirt and you can place an order for yours today or orderfrom our website. We are very pleased with it and can make a small profit on each sale.

We continue to provide a Cheltenham key ring to each girl graduating in Year 12 and anannual award for Citizenship which is given on Presentation Day. I have been thrilled torepresent the Asso iation at both the final Year 12 assembly and at Presentation Day. Weencourage all girls to attend Presentation Day and marvel at the grace and maturity of the

I

girls, the skill and precision that goes into the smooth running of the event, the enormoustalent presented and the great thrill of singing "Hallelujah" in the Opera House!

This year we have begun to focus on celebrations for the School's 60th anniversary in 2017and in this regard welcome Lyn, Langtry who is writing an official history of CheltenhamGirls High. We are thrilled that Lyn, formerly of the History staff, has become a member andmakes herself available to anybody who has a story to tell about school.

Our work this year would not have been so easy and pleasant without a strong and reliablecommittee. My thanks to Gloria Hill, secretary, newsletter publisher and webmasterextrodinaire and now a mother of two! She is an absolute jewel without whom I could notmanage (her maternity leave was difficult for me). Margaret Perry has been a strong andreliable treasurer who calmly explains all those numbers that simply confuse me. Living neareach other in the Hunter Valley we have been able to work together very closely and Iappreciate her patience with my short-comings. My sister, Marilyn, who while living inDarwin, has managed to playa vital part on the Committee (with thanks to Skype). She willbe living in lllinois for six month from early 2015 and has decided that it may be a littledifficult for her to participate in meetings from there so she will be retiring at this meeting.Philippa Medcalf - our local girl on the ground. If you see her on the street she will probablyhave a membership form in hand! Philippa is getting very involved in 2017 celebrations.Margaret Taylor and Ros Nossiter, sisters-in-law who love to get in and do the nitty gritty.Great job Margaret and Ros, I appreciate you taking up the slack and looking to the littledetails.

It has been an exhilarating year. Each year I tell the Committee that I will not stand againand each year their reaction is the same. However, recent ill health is a warning that I need toslow down and, while I am happy to be President for one more year, I am very happy to handover to somebody new.

Thank you all for your support this year.
