NSF/DOE Partnership in Basic Plasma Science and Engineering
è Focuses on fundamental issues of plasma science and engineering that may impact other areas or disciplines in which improved basic understanding of the plasma state is needed
è Proposals should discuss effective ways in which education is integrated within the research programs
è Proposals directly related to fusion energy studies are not eligible

Interagency partnership for the investigation of scientific and engineering issues concerning emerging trends in medical device technology. Enable investigators in science, engineering, and mathematics to develop research collaborations within the intramural research environment at the FDA. Four flexible mechanisms for support of research at the FDA: 1) Faculty at FDA; 2) Graduate Student Fellowships; 3) Postdoctoral Fellowships; and, 4) Undergraduate Student Research Experiences. Number of Awards FY10: 4 Faculty Funding: $500,000 each year

Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability (SEES) NSF-Wide Investment

SEES is expected to be a multi-year effort that will address challenges in climate and energy research and education using a systems-based approach to understanding, predicting, and reacting to change in the linked natural, social, and built environment. DCL released January 5, 2011 All seven directorates involved.

The Research Coordination Networks program (NSF 11-531) Supports planning activities that bring together novel groupings of researchers (including education researchers and experts in public engagement) and the development of innovative methods for networking investigators working on topics related to SEES). The Catalyzing New International Collaborations program (NSF 11-508) provides support for the early phase of developing and coordinating research and education activities with foreign partner(s). These activities include, but are not limited to: planning visits, small workshops, initial data gathering activities and the development of research coordination
PIRE Program DCL announces that upcoming FY2011-2012 PIRE competition will focus exclusively on SEES Anticipated revisions to the PIRE solicitation include: exclusive focus on SEES; elimination of the preliminary proposal requirement; and a limit of one full proposal from each eligible institution. The new PIRE solicitation will be posted on the NSF website, including the OISE homepage, expected in April 2011. Proposals due in late summer or early fall and awrds mde in spring of 2012.Subsequent solicitation will also focus on SEES, and is expected to be released in FY2014, with awards in FY2015.
