2000 structure structure (solids and liquids) D 2000 05 - 006 New Boron-Rich Materials: Cubic Carbaborides of Sodium and Potassium. The new ternary compounds NaB 5 C and KB 5 C are prepared by reaction of sodium or potassium with boron and graphite in a molar ratio of 6:5:1 at 1050 C for NaB 5 C (2 h) and at 1100 C for KB 5 C (16 h). Both compounds crystallize in the cubic space group Pm 3m with Z = 1. The compounds consist of an anionic B/C octahedral framework. Carbon atoms are statistically distributed over the boron sites. The new phases are isotypic with known cubic hexaborides, e.g. CaB 6 . KB 5 C is diamagnetic and exhibits semiconducting behavior. — (ALBERT, BARBARA; SCHMITT, KONNY; Chem.
