Guide to Exam Papers:

Areas of Revision Recall of Chemistry knowledge; Application of scientific ideas to unfamiliar contexts; Numeracy skills; Literacy skill

Revision Tips The following methods will develop understanding and long term retention. They are presented in an increasing level of difficulty. Condensing notes – produce summaries of your notes for each topic onto a maximum of 1 page of A4. Match cards – Good starting point with ideas and concepts that are still relatively unfamiliar. This provides opportunities to develop recognition. Cover and recall and quick quizzes – these are a step-up from match cards as it becomes more challenging to recall the information. Mind maps and SOLO hexagons – Encourages development and understanding of links within topics and between topics. Past papers – Analyse papers to identify (in this order): Trigger information; Question stems; Key science information; number of marks available. Then attempt questions using challenging times. After marking, analyse your responses and look for strengths, weaknesses and next steps to improve.

Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry Assesses content from units 1,2,3 & 5 1: Development of practical skills 2: Foundations in Chemistry 3: Periodic table and energy 5. Physical Chemistry and transition elements. Section A: multiple choice 15/100 marks Section B: structured and extended response question, covering theory and practical skills (85/100 marks)

Synthesis and analytical techniques Assesses content from units 1,2,4 & 6 1: Development of practical skills 2: Foundations in Chemistry 4: Core organic Chemistry 6: Organic Chemistry and analysis Section A: multiple choice 15/100 marks Section B: structured and extended response question, covering theory and practical skills (85/100 marks)

Unified Chemistry Assesses content from units 1 to 6 1: Development of practical skills 2: Foundations in Chemistry 3: Periodic table and energy 4: Core organic Chemistry 5. Physical Chemistry and transition elements. 6: Organic Chemistry and analysis Structured and extended response questions covering theory and practical skills (70 marks)
