Pure Substance vs. Mixture

SCIENCE STARTER

• You have 3 minutes• Work silently and individually

NON-NEGOTIABLE

• ONE SPEAKER–EVERYONE ELSE ACTIVELY

LISTEN • REMAIN IN YOUR SEAT• FOLLOW ALL DIRECTION

CONSEQUENCES

• VERBAL WARNINGS–5 POINTS OFF

• CALL HOME• DETENTION SLIP FROM THE

DEAN/AP

OBJECTIVE

• SWBAT – Identify the difference between a pure substance

and a mixture by providing examples.– Identify the difference between a homogenous

mixture and a heterogeneous mixture.– Use a particle diagram to illustrate the difference

between a pure substance and a mixture.

AGENDA

–Science Starter–Review of Pure Substance and

Mixture–Identify the Separation

techniques–Activity

PURE SUBSTANCE

• 2 types:– Element– Compound

QUIZ MAKEUP

• Next Wednesday – Quiz Makeup• 4th period or 9th period (up until 4:15PM)

PURE SUBSTANCE

• Have constant composition and constant properties

ELEMENT

COMPOUNDS

• Examples: – Carbon dioxide = CO2

– Sodium Chloride= NaCl– Ammonia = NH3

– Methane = CH4

– Hydrochloric Acid = HCl

MIXTURE

• Two types:– Homogeneous– Heterogeneous

MIXTURES

• Have varied composition and properties

PARTICLE DIAGRAMS

• A method by which a box with colorful balls are drawn to represent atoms or molecules.

PARTICLE DIAGRAMS - ELEMENTS

PARTICLE DIAGRAMS - COMPOUND

PARTICLE DIAGRAMS - HOMOGENEOUS

PARTICLE DIAGRAMS - HETEROGENEOUS

SEPARATION TECHNIQUES

• Chromatography• Filtration• Evaporation• Distillation• Magnetism

CHROMATOGRAPHY

• One type is called Paper Chromatography– Usually used to identify chemicals (coloring

agents)

CHROMATOGRAPHY

FILTRATION

• Method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid– Popularly used in water treatment

FILTRATION

EVAPORATION

• Method used to separating a homogeneous (solution) mixture of a soluble solid and a solvent

• Involves heating the solution until the solvent evaporates – Examples: water and sugar solution– Heat the solution until the water (solvent) dissolve

leaving behind the sugar

EVAPORATION

DISTILLATION

• Method used to separate a liquid from a solution

• Similar to evaporation but the vapor is collected by condensation

DISTILLATION

MAGNETISM

• Method used to separate two solids with one having magnetic properties

MAGNETISM

SEPARATING FUNNEL

• Method for separating two immiscible liquids (liquids that do not dissolve well)– Oil and water

SEPARATING FUNNEL

Activity – Extra Points

• 1. Draw the Chromatography Experiment– Also include a description of what you did – 5 points

• 2. Draw the Filtration Experiment– Also include a description of what you did– 5 points
