CHHS17/312 Canberra Hospital and Health Services Guideline Chemotherapy: Care of the Adult Patient (eviQ) Purpose eviQ is a resource of evidenced based, consensus driven, cancer treatment protocols and information for use at the point of care to support health professionals in the delivery of cancer treatments. eviQ is endorsed for use by clinical staff within Canberra Hospital and Health Services (CHHS) to access clinical information and complete mandatory training and competencies related to the care and management of adult patients receiving chemotherapy. CHHS endorses the use of eviQ as the best practice standard to follow in the provision of care and management of adult patients receiving chemotherapy. The eviQ database contains instructions, guides and protocols on the administration of oral, intravenous, subcutaneous and intramuscular chemotherapy, safe handling, spill management, waste management, extravasation management, and assessment and management of side effects. eviQ is endorsed for use by clinical staff within Canberra Hospital and Health Services (CHHS) to access clinical information and complete mandatory training and competencies related to the care and management of adult patients receiving chemotherapy. CHHS endorses the use of eviQ as the best practice standard to follow in the provision of care and management of adult patients receiving chemotherapy.

The eviQ database contains instructions, guides and protocols on the administration of oral, intravenous, subcutaneous and intramuscular chemotherapy, safe handling, spill management, waste management, extravasation management, and assessment and management of side effects.

Scope

Clinical staff providing care to patients receiving chemotherapy in the inpatient, outpatient and community settings, including: Medical Officers Pharmacists, and Registered and Enrolled Nurses.

Alerts

Cytotoxic Safe HandlingCytotoxic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) MUST be worn when administering chemotherapy and handling all body fluids and waste: blood, urine, faeces, vomitus, sweat and cavity fluids. See “Safe Handling and Waste Management of Hazardous Drugs” on eviQ.

Cytotoxic precautions must be observed for 7 days after the completion of chemotherapy (ACT Health specific requirement).

Any cytotoxic exposure (by inhalation, dermal absorption, mucosal absorption, ingestion or needle-stick injury) must be reported to the Occupational Medicine Unit or the after-
