Chemetator ® Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger The Chemetator is a scraped surface heat exchanger ideal for many applications in the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. During operation, the product flows through a jacketed cylinder containing a rotating central shaft on which the scraper blades are mounted. These rotating blades continuously remove the product from the heat transfer tube. The Chemetator is particularly suitable for the continuous processing of high viscosity and heat sensitive materials which cannot be handled efficiently using batch methods or conventional heat exchangers.

Scraped Surface Heat ExchangerThe Chemetator is a scraped surface heat exchanger ideal for manyapplications in the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Increased EfficiencyThe Chemetator features variable speedrotating scraper blades which clean the heattransfer surface several hundred times aminute. This ensures excellent product mixingand high heat transfer efficiency on acontinuous basis. Product mixing can beimproved still further with the use of anoptional eccentric shaft.

FlexibilityThe Chemetator will handle a wide range ofheat sensitive and viscous materials attemperatures from –35° to 170°C andoperating pressures up to 70 bar (1015 psig).

Hygienic OperationStainless steel units ensure optimum hygienestandards and the closed system operatesunder pressure, preventing any atmosphericcontamination of the product duringprocessing. The Chemetator can be easilysterilised and is ideally suited for asepticprocessing systems.

Product QualityThe Chemetator ensures a product of uniformcomposition and quality. Accurate control andhigh throughput speed mean virtually noproduct degradation.

Construction OptionsAvailable in a range of sizes, the Chemetatorcan be manufactured in materials most suitedto the application. Heat transfer tubes can besupplied in nickel or mild steel, with hardchromium plating for wear resistance, or instainless steel or Venjex. Mutator shafts areavailable in stainless or mild steel and can besupplied in different diameters to suitparticular products. Different arrangements ofblades are used according to the application.

Chemetator ApplicationsSimplicity of operation combined withaccurate process control makes theChemetator ideal for heating, cooking,pasteurising, sterilising, cooling, gelatinisingand crystallising.

Examples are:–LiquoriceThe Chemetator enables processing ofliquorice paste at its final 20% moisturecontent thus saving steam costs andeliminating the need for stoving.

Starch Jellies Continuous cooking of starch jellies can beachieved in seconds at elevated temperaturesof 140°C in a Chemetator system.

Cooling of Biscuit CreamChemetators are used extensively for thecooling of sugar and oil blends which aredirectly fed to the creamer. Air injection prior tochilling allows density adjustment.

Chilling of Edible FatsThe Chemetator is standard equipmentthroughout the margarine industry giving aconsistent texture of product on a fully continuoussystem from blending to packaging. Numerousprocessing ancillaries give the Chemetator theability to process tub, block, cake and pastrymargarines as well as low fat spreads.

Throughout the world Chemetators are inoperation producing pumpable and bulkfilled shortenings and ghees. Lard is alsoprocessed either for consumer packs orsemi-liquid bulk filling.

GelatineChemetator cooling of gelatinehas been adopted by all themajor manufacturers.The unique oval tube modelallows highly concentratedproduct from the evaporator tobe continuously chilled andthen gelled in a short holdingtube before being extruded innoodle form direct onto theband dryer.

MarshmallowThe oval tube facility allowscooling of aerated marshmallowand extrusion in final form whererequired.

Peanut ButterSmooth and crunchy peanutbutter can be cooled to fillingtemperatures on Chemetatorequipment.

WaxesThe ability of the Chemetator toproduce a very small crystal sizeand to extrude in a solid formhas proved advantageous in anumber of processes involvingwax based products. Inparticular shoe polish, printingink compounds and electricalcable insulants are now cooledon Chemetator equipment.

Optimum DesignConstructionThe key to the system is the horizontalheat transfer cylinder, jacketed for directexpansion refrigerant. The standarddesign carries a scraper shaft withdiametrically opposed rows of floatingtype scraper blades mounted within thecylinder. The shaft can easily be removedfrom its bearing and coupling support forcleaning, inspection and maintenance.The removable heat transfer tubes arenormally made of nickel for optimalefficiency and wear resistance. As theshaft rotates, the blades continuouslyscrape the inside diameter of the tube ata rate of approximately 1000 scrapesper minute ensuring optimal emulsioncrystallisation, mixing and heat transfer.
