Summary: Plant workers and firefighters put their lives on the line to control acatastrophic April 1986 explosion at a Soviet nuclear power plant.

The episode begins in Moscow, April 26,1988. A man is speaking negatively intoa tape recorder about Anatoly Dyatlov, calling him an arrogant, unpleasant. Wesoon learn that Dyatlov was AssistantChief Engineer at the Chernobyl nuclearpower. Also, the man recording himselfis Valery Legasov. Legaslov says Dyat-lov doesn’t deserve prison, but death. AsLegaslov heads outside to hide his cas-sette tape recordings (and his narrative),

it seems a car is outside, spying on him. When Legaslov returns to his apartment, he feeds hiscat, then hangs himself.

Not far from the Chernobyl plant, Lyudmilla and fireman Vasily Ignatenko hear and see theplant explosion from their home. Meanwhile, at Chernobyl, we get an inkling as to why Legaslovbad-mouthed Dyatlov earlier. Right from the outset, Dyatlov denies the possibility of a core ex-plosion, blaming Toptunov for blowing up the control tank and downplaying the disaster. Still,Perevozchenko insists the core is no longer there. However, Dyatlov doesn’t appear to be so bad,

at least not yet. Similarly, Vasily the fireman downplays the explosion, confidently getting readyto face the danger.

However, at the facility itself, people are already vomiting blood, and a man named Khodem-chuk is missing (apparently they never find him, at least not in this episode). Another man, Viktoris bloody — often a sign things aren’t going well. Despite how the air tastes like metal, Dyatlovstill denies there was a core explosion and acts like things are okay. However, the firefighters, nuclear plant workers, and bloody sores begin to tell another story.

Perevozschenko says this, meaning to say there was no core there! However, when assessingthe problem, including the injuries around him, Dyatlov tells Akimov that he’s seen worse. Onthat note, Akimov is told to call in the day shift, to help assist in the situation. Meanwhile, welearn that the nearest hospital doesn’t have iodine pills — although, realistically, such pills offeronly minimal protection against radiation, at best.

When assessing what happened, Chief Engineer Nikolai Fomin and Director Bryukhanov aretold that hydrogen accumulated in a control system tank and ignited. However, Dyatlov stilldenies a core explosion possibility. Then, in perhaps the bleakest scene of the episode, we seenuclear dust particles in the air, and children playing in it! While this fun is happening, Vasilyand other firefighters are directed to address the fire from the roof.

As power plant workers head into the non-existent core, those in charge hold a meeting.Director Bryukhanov says the accident is ”well under control.” However, Petrovich says radiationis not limited to the plant itself and notes that ”the air is glowing.” However, in a rousing speech,Zharkov urges the committee to seal off the city, so no one leaves and to ”cut off the spread ofmisinformation.” Afterward, Dyatlov vomits from radiation exposure. Meanwhile, Sitnikov is sentto look at the core from the vent block roof. He initially refuses, but ultimately goes and sees thedisaster for what it is.

As truck after truck bring people to the hospital, Valery Legasov gets called in to attend ameeting, to give answers about RBMK reactor questions. However, Boris Shcherbina makes clearthat Legaslov is only to answer technical questions, and it’s implied that the range of acceptabletopics and answers will be limited. The episode ends with an encroaching, ominous cloud, thena crow falling dead from the sky.

Summary: With untold millions at risk, Ulana makes a desperate attempt to reachValery and warn him about the threat of a second explosion.

At the Belorussian Institute for Nu-clear energy in Minsk, Dmitri and UlanaKhomyuk immediately analyze a sam-ple of a substance in the air. AlthoughUlana is a composite character, she ad-equately represents the struggle of Rus-sian nuclear scientists to break throughbureaucratic red tape to expose the sim-ple truths of the Chernobyl disaster.

Both Ulana and Legasov ultimatelytake it upon themselves to prove thatChernobyl’s core actually exploded, whereasthe Soviet authorities are officially deny-

ing it. However, when no one’s answering the phone at the plant, it almost immediately validatescertain concerns about the disaster’s scope.

Hospitals have already seen the explosion’s effects. Dr. Svetlana Zinchenko is dealing witha patient’s radiation burns and contaminated clothes. Shockingly, no one on the hospital staffseems to be wearing gloves as they handle nuclear-contaminated clothing!

Because of the panic (and radioactive particles) in the air, Lyudmilla Ignatenko easily sneaksinto the crowded hospital to find her firefighter husband, Vasily. She is told that he was trans-ported to Moscow, and to tell them that Major Burov allows her there. However, will that beenough to get her through a blockade?

Legasov soon meets with officials, including Mikhail Gorbachev, the General Secretary of theCPSU. Shcherbina is largely downplaying the disaster. However, Legasov notes how graphite onthe ground means the core exploded, adding that dosimeter readings are inaccurate — theyare only low because they’ve maxed out with those particular dosimeters. In other words, theradiation is much higher than a chest x-ray.

When accused of exaggerating, Legaslov says, ”It’s not alarmist if it’s a fact.” When askedabout the RBMK reactor, he compares every gram of U-235 to bullet. While the bullets may notalways kill instantly, they have potentially highly lethal effects.

Gorbachev tasks Shcherbina and Legasov with examining the facility, and they travel by he-licopter to the Chernobyl plant. On the way there, Shcherbina threatens Legasov to gain infor-mation on the technology, saying, ”Tell me how a nuclear reactor works or I’ll have one of thesesoldiers throw you out of the helicopter.” Legasov explains that it makes electricity with steam,as the steam turns a turbine. The aforementioned graphite surrounds fuel rods to slow downneutron flux.

He also has Shcherbina look out the window to see radiation ionizing the air, to demonstratefirsthand that the core is exposed. Bizarrely, in wanting a closer look, Shcherbina threatens tohave the pilot shot if he doesn’t fly over reactor! Legasov boldly oversteps the threat, telling thepilot: ”If you fly directly over that core, I promise you, by tomorrow morning you’ll be begging forthat bullet.”

At the Belorussian Communist Party headquarters, Ulana meets deputy secretary Garanin. He initially resists her information, which prompts her to say, ”I’m a nuclear physicist. Beforeyou were deputy secretary you worked in a shoe factory.” On her way out, she gives his aid iodinetablets, advising her to get as far from Minsk as she can. The downplaying continues for Legasov, too.

Chernobyl manager Viktor Bryukhanov dismisses Legasov as ”saying dangerous things,” anddiscredits him for not explaining how the RBMK core exploded. Bryukhanov even calls it dis-graceful.

However, the supposedly disgraced Legasov gets his high range dosimeters. It’s quickly as-sessed that, as they put men in vehicles for their plan, some lead shielding may not be enough.General Pikalov says the dosimeter readings are at 15,000 roentgen, which is obviously far higherthan 3!

To emphasize what that means, Legasov says the fire’s giving off nearly twice the radiationreleased by Hiroshima bomb. He adds that it’s not a normal fire. If you try to put it out withwater, heat will instantly vaporize it. He emphasizes, ”You are dealing with something that hasnever occurred on this planet before.”

As a tentative plan, he suggests using 5,000 tons of sand and boron and evacuating the city ofPripyat. Later, at a bar, a local woman asks Leghasov if there’s anything to worry about. Legasovlies to her, simply saying ”No.” It may be a pivotal moment for the character, but one easilyunderstands why he told her that.

By this point, even Shcherbina seems to see the gravity of the situation. He was seeminglymoved by the problems faced by children. So, this time at least, he actually orders helicopters tonot fly directly over the core. Still, one gets too close and crashes. As this plan is enacted, Ulanacalls Marina, and they speak in code to verify the boron drop (presumably to avoid detection bySoviet officials). However, we soon learn government secrecy isn’t working anyway. Germans arealready reluctant to let their children play outside!

Ulana soon meets Boris and Legasov by getting arrested and tells them that sand and boronis a mistake. Legasov initially didn’t know that water was gushing into Chernobyl’s structure thewhole time. What does that mean? Well, as Legasov explains before Gorbachev and crew: Thetemperature will rise because of the sand, and the uranium will melt the sand, creating lava.

Then, when the lava enters the water tanks, it is certain to cause a thermal explosion, destroyingeverything within 30 kilometers (approximately 18.64 miles).

In order to avoid mass devastation, cancer, and birth defects, someone must pump water fromthese tanks. They need three workers to get through to the ”sluice gate” valve to pump them out.The major downside to this challenge? The three men will likely die in a week. In an actualinspiring moment from Boris Shcherbina, he explains to a disgruntled plant employee that, ”Ifyou don’t do this, millions will die.” While one can understand asking ”What’s in it for us?” therereally is more at stake here than one person’s benefit.

At this point, it ceases being an ideological matter, but one of decency and bravery. While noteveryone can rise to that challenge, Ananenko, Bezpalov and Baranov volunteer. Little time iswasted in getting them to the plant. As they traverse the waters, their dosimeters going off likecrazy. Ominously, their flashlight goes out.

Summary: Valery creates a detailed plan to decontaminate Chernobyl; Lyudmillaignores warnings about her firefighter husband’s contamination.

The basement is successfully drained, but a nuclear meltdown has begun andthreatens to contaminate the groundwa-ter.

Shcherbina and Legasov convinceGorbachev that a heat exchanger isneeded under the plant, for whichMikhail Shchadov recruits from Tula coalminers, led by Glukhov, to excavate atunnel in extremely adverse conditions.

Shcherbina warns Legasov that theyare under KGB surveillance.

Legasov sends Khomyuk to a Moscowhospital, where she finds Dyatlov uncooperative but learns from dying Toptunov and Akimov thatthe plant exploded after Akimov initiated an emergency shutdown, a scenario thought impossible.

Bribing her way into the hospital and lying about her pregnancy, Lyudmilla is allowed to visitVasily but disobeys orders, staying longer and touching her husband.

Following Vasily’s death, Khomyuk finds Lyudmilla; aware of Lyudmilla’s pregnancy, shethreatens to report everything to the committee and is arrested by KGB agents, but is releasedon Legasov’s insistence.

As Shcherbina and Legasov report to the Central Executive Committee their decontaminationplans requiring the mass mobilization of liquidators, Lyudmilla stands among relatives of otherdeceased ARS victims as Vasily, sealed in a lead casket, is buried in concrete at a mass grave.

Summary: Valery and Boris attempt to find solutions to removing the radioactivedebris; Ulana attempts to find out the cause of the explosion.

Residents are evacuated from the widerChernobyl Exclusion Zone and decon-tamination operations are underway.

Civilian draftee Pavel is paired withSoviet—Afghan War veteran Bacho to pa-trol the Zone to shoot and dispose ofabandoned animals due to radioactivecontamination.

Chernobyl liquidator commander Gen-eral Nikolai Tarakanov deploys Lunokhodprogramme rovers to clear the plant’s roof

for a shelter. After a West German police robot almost instantly fails on the most irradiated level, Tarakanov

is forced to cycle 3,828 liquidators to clear it by hand, allowed only 90 seconds each, once.Khomyuk investigates the Moscow archives and confronts Dyatlov, who knows the govern-

ment is not interested in the truth.Meeting away from KGB bugs, Shcherbina and Legasov inform Khomyuk they must testify as

experts in the trial of Dyatlov, Bryukhanov, and Fomin, and Legasov will address the Interna-tional Atomic Energy Agency.

Khomyuk reveals an article about an identical incident at the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plantin 1975, suppressed by the KGB, and tells them Lyudmilla gave birth to a girl who soon diedfrom radiation poisoning.

Khomyuk urges Legasov to tell the IAEA the complete truth, while Shcherbina urges cautionto avoid government retaliation.

Summary: Valery, Boris and Ulana risk their lives and reputations to expose thetruth about Chernobyl.

Following Legasov’s testimony to theIAEA in Vienna, in which he lies, Dyat-lov, Bryukhanov, and Fomin are put ontrial in the abandoned city of Chernobyl.

Shcherbina is called first to give testi-mony, explaining the general workings ofa nuclear power plant.

Khomyuk and Legasov testify on theevents leading up to the accident, basedon interviews with people in the controlroom.

Flashbacks show that due to a ten-hour delay in the safety test and Dyatlov’s impatience tocarry it out, the reactor stalled, then experienced a power spike. Akimov activated the emergencyshutdown, but a design flaw in the control rods spiked the power to ten times the reactor’s limitbefore it exploded.

Legasov reveals the suppressed information about the Leningrad plant, admitting he lied inhis previous testimony in Vienna. He is detained by the KGB and informed that his testimonywill be suppressed in the state media; furthermore, he is forbidden to speak to anyone aboutChernobyl, he will receive no credit for his role in containing the disaster, and he will never workagain.

The ending shows pictures and video of the real Legasov and other major players, revealingtheir fates, as well as the ongoing aftermath of the accident.
