Board Spotlight - Jennifer Knapp

Jennifer is an attorney who lives in Winona with her husband and their three young children. She owns two law offices (Libera Knapp P.A.) that specialize in estate planning, business law, and real estate law. One office is in Winona and the other is in Rochester. Jennifer is well known in the philanthropic community of Winona and has served on other non-profit boards.

Why do you believe in the mission of FCC?

Healthy individuals and families are key to the communities in which we live. FCC takes great care in helping both thrive within their existing communities. FCC’s belief that resolving problems where they occur results in greater long-term success, healthier family relationships and a more profound sense of individual well-being.

What is one thing you want everyone to know about FCC?

FCC services work to prevent child abuse, help individuals achieve recovery from serious mental illness, find healthy and stable homes for children whose parents can no longer care for them and keep youth on track for graduation. FCC offers more than 25 programs in eight regional locations in western Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota.

Why should people consider a gift to FCC?

Federal and State dollars are limited for prevention and early intervention work. FCC’s programs: Healthy Families, Hope Academy, Host Homes, Child Advocacy Programs, Domestic Abuse Project, The Other Door (Drop In Center) and Safe Haven are reliant on private donations and grants to operate. The benefit to our communities in funding these types of programs are lower treatment costs, less suffering, more cohesive families and of course happier, better adjusted, more successful individuals.

What have you learned from serving on FCC’s Board of Directors?

It is up to us, the community, to create new sustainable funding solutions through philanthropy to meet the needs of families now and into the future. Through individual and community partnerships, the Center can ensure at-risk children, adults and families receive the programs and services that will enable them to build happy hopeful lives.

Our Board of DirectorsThe community volunteers who serve on Family & Children’s Center’s Board of Directors are our most committed ambassadors and advocates. They share their time, talent and treasure to ensure the center’s success in every area: strategy, programs, personnel and finances.

Greetings,

In the words of author Suzy Ross, Ph.D., “Transformation is an ongoing process that tends to appear ordinary, when, in fact, something extraordinary is taking place.”

Through our work at Family & Children’s Center, we know this to be true. Our efforts here are entirely focused on helping people move from where they are to where they want to be—finding and becoming the best version of themselves. As a result, we see such transformations, both large and small, slowly unfurl before us every day and in every program.

These transformations would not be possible without our generous donors and volunteers. It is only with your support that we can help people find their inner strengths to confront the difficulties they encounter along life’s path, finding new skills and new supports to achieve dramatically better tomorrows.

As our clients find better tomorrows, so do their families, beginning a positive ripple effect that flows into our schools, workplaces, neighborhoods and communities—and seeps into generations to come. Stepping back, we

see that by helping others transform their lives, we’re also transforming our own.

Family & Children’s Center’s Healthy Families program came at a pivotal point for Cheryl. She was a young single mother new to the La Crosse area, moving to attend Western Technical College. Cheryl left an abusive relationship and ventured to a new city for a fresh start. She also left behind her entire support team consisting of her mom, stepdad and close friends. Cheryl was in a city with no real connections. She found it difficult to make friends at college due to being a young mom and many times, she felt isolated, alone and afraid. Cheryl desperately wanted to be the best parent, but often felt as though she was failing her daughter.

She unfortunately did not have the ideal, picture-perfect childhood to model what a healthy relationship and family foundation looked like. Her dad was an alcoholic and he lost his battle in February 2017 (Cheryl wishes that he rest in peace). He was physically and emotionally abusive to her mother, as well as to her and her brother. The change came when she was twelve when they were kicked out of their Chicago home. Her mother had the strength and courage to move to Wisconsin to give her children a fresh start. She certainly did the best she could raising children on her own, but Cheryl knew that when she became a mother she wanted more, and a better life for her daughter.

Family & Children’s Center’s Healthy Families program came into her life twenty-three years ago. She admits that when she first became part of the program she was resistant and even angry at times. It felt like the home visits were an added responsibility to her already full schedule of being mom and

college student, plus working two jobs. Cheryl really thought she had everything under control and didn’t want to admit she needed any help. She was truly afraid of being judged as a bad parent and to be told she was doing it all wrong. That she was somehow weak for not being able to be a supermom. She quickly learned that true strength sometimes means asking for help.

Cheryl’s other concerns about the Healthy Families program turned

out to be completely invalid. Soon into the program, she started looking forward to the home visits and what they provided her and her daughter. It was her opportunity to ask questions and to share her concerns, but also to share her successes. It was a shoulder to cry on because parenting was hard work and single parenting was truly the biggest challenge in her life. Her Family Systems Specialist provided her with resources within the community, such as Headstart, immunization

Cheryl and the Healthy Families Program

Stand the Test of Timeclinics, job center and resume guidance. The specialist helped Cheryl understand what a healthy relationship should look like so she wouldn’t repeat past behaviors when looking for a partner.

They discussed goal setting and her plans post-graduation, to ensure she would have a career that would support herself and her daughter. The specialist truly cared about Cheryl and her daughter and wanted them to be a happy and healthy family unit! Many times Cheryl considered moving back home in those early years; but she persevered and now twenty-four years later, she is still proud to call the La Crosse area her home.

Today, she lives her passion in helping others find their inner strength mentally and physically. She works as a personal trainer, nutrition specialist, wellness coach and yoga instructor. In December of 2017, she took a leap of faith and signed a lease in Onalaska to open her own facility — Changing Lanes Fitness & Nutrition. She wants to help others realize their true potential in their health and wellness, and never be afraid to change lanes on the road of life. Most recently she received her 100 Hour YogaFit Warrior Certification and plans to help those in our community suffering from trauma, PTSD, and other mental health issues by introducing yoga, breathing techniques and meditation. Cheryl knows first-hand the benefits of yoga in helping heal past trauma, depression and anxiety. With the growing mental health crisis, Cheryl wants to help give back to the community that helped her overcome so much.

She feels so lucky to share this amazing life with her husband Jim. They have been married for over sixteen years and he has supported her in every way possible. He adopted Skyla and is an amazing father and husband. They

“I believe the help from the Family & Children’s Center’s, Healthy Families program, was instrumental in getting me through those initial years. Thank you for all you did to support me during some of the most challenging years of motherhood - I am forever grateful. And thank you to donors, for without your support and generosity this program couldn’t continue to help improve family dynamics and build a stronger community!”

also have an awesome fifteen-year-old son, Isaac.

The true champion of her story is her daughter Skyla. Skyla has had a challenging couple of years, but has said numerous times, that the strength of her family has kept her moving forward and focusing on the positives. She stayed in La Crosse for college and received her bachelor’s degree in Community Health from UW-L. She is currently studying for her master’s in Public Health

while working full-time as a Community

Educator with Coulee

Council on Addictions. She is intelligent,

honest and compassionate

with a desire to help others in

our community. To say that Cheryl is a proud mom is truly an understatement. She is proud of their journey together as a family and for breaking the cycle of abuse, addiction and poverty.

Bridget was in her early teens when she found herself the victim of rape. After becoming a teenage rape victim, it was then Bridget started using alcohol, skipping school and running away from home. This led to trouble with law enforcement and she spent time “in the system”. She battled depression and tried several programs to help her turn her life around, but it ultimately led to a failed suicide attempt. In order to cope, she turned to self-medication with drugs and alcohol, which resulted in addiction.

Later in her teenage years, Bridget gave birth to a healthy handsome son and a couple years later a healthy beautiful daughter. During the times she was pregnant, Bridget maintained her sobriety. Unfortunately, she did not stay sober. Her relationship with her children’s father was difficult and it resulted in co-dependencies. This made it challenging to break the cycle of drug and alcohol abuse. Her life derailed.

She was once again, in the grips of addiction. Her world fell out from under her when she lost custody of her children. Bridget’s parents were able to step into the role of

caregivers, which allowed her to concentrate on her sobriety. Her ultimate goal was to return to her role as a mother. She went to an in-patient treatment program for drug and alcohol addiction for ninety days. After treatment, Bridget became a resident at Family & Children’s Center’s Hiawatha Hall where she and others with serious

mental health conditions, engage in activities that encourage the growth of skills necessary for healthy, self-sufficient lives.

At Hiawatha Hall, she found the structure she needed to be successful. She was accountable for completing tasks such as making her bed each day, taking her medication, going to FCC group therapy, and learning coping mechanisms when the urge to use struck. Bridget stated, “The

staff at Family & Children’s Center truly cared about me and were not helping me because they were paid but because they were invested in my future.” She learned life skills and was introduced to Narcotics Anonymous (N.A.). She slowly became part of the community and most importantly, a big part of her children’s lives.

After leaving Hiawatha Hall, she moved back in with her parents and children. Fortunately, Bridget continued her support in Family & Children’s Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services (ARMHS) program, which provided her with weekly counseling, sober activities, and the knowledge and skills to become her own advocate. After a lot of hard work and determination, in August of 2017 she regained custody of her children. She now has her own apartment, received her high school diploma and feels ready for the future. For a career goal, she has her sights set on working for Family & Children’s Center as a Peer Specialist.

Bridget has been clean and sober for three years now. She credits her success to her time with Family & Children’s Center, the strength and strong support of her parents, her N.A. sponsors along with her desire and her determination to be the best mom to her children.

“ Being a part of watching Bridget's transformation has truly been a privilege. I admire her positive attitude and determination.”

~ Her counselor, Mark from FCC

It shouldn’t happen here, but it does. One in ten kids will be abused before the age of 18. Many of them will suffer lifetime consequences. All of them are forever changed.

These companies or event sponsors have had enough. They partnered with Family & Children’s Center in 2017 to be a True Blue Partner by sponsoring programs that give children better tomorrows.

We are most grateful for their support. We hope that you are too.

“ As long as I stay clean and sober I have a chance.”

~ Jeremy

Jeremy never felt as though he fit-in or belonged. He grew up in a strict family and he feared getting into trouble and the consequences of any wrong actions. He conformed to the rules, was an “A” student and did well at school sports. Yet, in spite of that, he was bullied a lot, which reinforced his idea that there was something wrong with him.

It was during his senior year in high school when his troubles began to escalate. He started using alcohol and drugs in order to feel better about himself. He soon experienced that when he used drugs, he felt happy, warm and loved. It did not take long before Jeremy started using to the point of blacking out. However, he graduated high school with good grades and looked forward to college. That summer, graduation parties led to more partying. For the first time, he soon began to make friends and felt cool, however these friendships were short-lived due to his drama-filled behavior when using.

He excelled by most standards at college by maintaining a 4.0 GPA while taking seventeen credits per semester. All the while he continued to use alcohol and drugs. During

college, it was not unusual for parties to grow to a hundred people or more. He did not necessarily go to classes but was very good at test taking. He graduated just short of high honors.

After college, when his future should have looked bright, Jeremy soon found that his friends were gone. He rationalized that he was fine but that the rest of the world was screwed up. He was burned-out. He did not want to work or apply for work. He felt he was losing touch with reality. With little income, Jeremy and his longtime girlfriend started having relationship issues. They were evicted from their apartment and things started to crumble. They argued all the time and their eventual breakup left Jeremy hurt, angry and with a feeling of being mentally unstable. One night he felt so out-of-control that he called 911 on himself in order to stop from becoming physical with others.

His drug use progressed from recreational to hard core drugs. He had a full-time job; but used drugs before, during and after work. He was high all of the time. Nearly all of his money went to buying drugs. He did not care if he lived or died.

At one point, he thought that he was very close to a deadly overdose after being unconscious for two days. He was a slave to drugs. Jeremy felt hopeless and found that the drugs were no longer fun. His drug seeking behavior became more and more risky as money ran short and his highs wore off.

He started counseling and began to understand his mental health conditions of depression, anxiety, ADHD and was eventually diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. His drug use continued. Eventually he began to be completely honest with his counselors about his drug use. He wanted help and they wanted to help him. He decided to try the Comprehensive Community Services Program. He attended sessions on wellness and mindfulness in addition to counseling. During the eighteen-month program, he experienced some setbacks along the way. He still felt powerless over his addiction but eventually concluded there must be a higher power greater than just himself - that looked over him for the thirteen years he used alcohol and dangerous drugs. He needed a miracle and was committed to working the 12 Step Process. He had the support he needed and later

learned about Family & Children’s Center - The Other Door, (Vernon County’s drop-in center). He participated in the Recovery through Sharing Program at The Other Door in addition to attending other meetings.

He made friends and felt that The Other Door was a safe place to go and a place where he was not judged. He felt comfortable with the staff and found fellowship and friendship that had been missing in his life for a long time.

Today, Jeremy continues counseling and visits The Other Door almost every day by attending meetings or by paying it forward in doing service work for them. He continues to work with his friends and is supporting

others now in their own recovery. He is an advocate of The Other Door, letting other communities know about this very special place. Since becoming clean and sober, Jeremy describes life as awesome. He appreciates a simple life and being someone who is responsible. His boss is supportive of his recovery. Jeremy is doing well at his job and enjoys going to work every day. He is mending relationships with his family and has restored trust and relationships in the community. He does not have his entire future mapped out, but for now, he is very content leading a simple life, helping his grandparents with chores every week and being a productive and valuable member of

the community. Jeremy has been clean and sober for two years.

Jeremy found his miracle and works to help others find one as well.

“ As a peer staff person at the Other Door, I have known Jeremy from the first time he came to the drop in center. I have watched him grow from being wretched and hopeless to a valuable and competent member of the community. He made those changes by following suggestions, taking seriously his inventory and solutions work and never missing or being late for the many meetings, appointments and groups he attended, even while having weekly appointments with doctors and therapists and working full time. He was willing to do the inventory and solutions work that are needed to find a way out of the chaos he came in with. We, at the Other Door, are privileged to be part of his success story.”
