Site Plan
The Chesapeake Bay Headquarters takes up residence on the land that serves as the entrance to the bay. Because of this, the building does not stand in opposition to the land, but joins with it as to not take away from the beauty of the surrounding area. The building is laid out on a long axis and connects the entrances with the docks and surrounding wetlands. The offices are given special consideration by not only allowing the workers to have their own individual space within a whole, but providing them with views of the bay and an interior courtyard space complete with a water garden. This space is protected by a solar shade that stretches the length of the building and acts as a natural light diffuser to keep the building naturally lit but reducing glare and heat gain. The water pool integrated within the building not only allows for a calming space to take a break from work, but also a manageable education space to teach students about the importance of the health of the bay. This allows for the very thing they are trying to protect to have it’s own place within the building.
