Thecity and the three boroughs adjoining g:are now built up solidly, separated only by imaginary lines, hence the '"dnecflssityof classifying them as one body. True, they h"ve separate governments, but the question of annexation, which has been agitated ~during the past two years, is bound to bear irult, and, indeed, in North tdChester Borough a petition lately circulat.ed with tbat object in view, 8bas ~een signed by a large majority of the citizens. a..

Chester was settled in 16~5, and has the bonor of being t~le oldest 00town In the State. Nearly two \}enturies ago, 1690, It was constituted 8 corporate town, but it was not tin 1866 that it arose to the dignity of A.ra town, at which latter date the boroughs on the north and south ~

~were for the most part used as farming land. In 1871 South :;jChester was incorporated as a borough, and In 1874 North Cbeater, a ,,:-rmanufacturing settlement, was granted a borough charter. ~
