Dear Parents and Carers, Thank you to everyone who attended the Spring Concert last night. It was a fantastic showcase of everything the Music Department has to offer and was the true embodiment of our ethos of a Creative Learning Community. Thank you to Ms Durban for orchestrating such a wonderful evening.

MESSAGE FROM JUDI DUMONT-BARTER,

CHAIR OF THE LOCAL ACADEMY COMMITTEE

The OFSTED Factor

Dear Parents,

Over the past six years we have been planning for Ofsted and each year they failed to show up. During 2016-2017 we focused on building a strong partnership with Chesterton Primary School so that we could welcome more schools under the Wandle Learning Trust (WLT) umbrella and share with these schools our ethos of high quality education for all, pupil-centred curriculum delivery and outstanding results, while maintaining a focus on diversity and being a creative learning community. We have celebrated our beautiful new school development, held strongly by a cohesive leadership team and have continued to face the challenges of a changing curriculum...the thoughts of Ofsted started to fade.

We knew Ofsted was changing - the framework, the leadership and how it would be working with schools, and in 2019 we turned our attention back to getting ready, being prepared and as much as possible (as Local Academy Committee members) knowing our school and the needs of our pupils and other stakeholders, namely our parents and school staff. In January 2019, Ofsted came knocking.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mr Kingsley, Ms Davies, Ms Jackson, Mr Taylor the whole senior leadership team and all the staff that were impacted by two days (yes just two days, it certainly seemed longer) of challenge and questioning. My deputy Sarah Marshall, chair of the WLT Sian Mathias and myself represented the governance strand of the Leadership and Management judgement and met the Ofsted inspectors on two separate occasions. They were clear about their agenda and we stood our ground to let them know all the brilliant things that we know the school offers. No establishment is perfect so we accepted that more certainly can be done for our young people who enter school with the greatest challenges, whether these are emotional, financial or educational. Also that we now have a school with pupils that come in with the highest levels of attainment, who need greater challenge to achieve even greater results. We countered with the great work the school does on supporting the Rights Respecting agenda including LGBTQ+ awareness; addressing staff well-being and keeping a watchful eye on staff workload; partnership with Sharon Noble our Development Manager and her connection to the Friends of Chestnut Grove and the funds that have been raised to support our young people, especially those needing mental health support and counselling.

We definitely said more, but I won’t go on...what I want you to know it that as the Local Academy Committee we are so proud of our children, the school and the grading that we received. I would have liked to argue for outstanding but I think the inspectors were fair in their deliberations. We were really so very close, an Outstanding Good is how we have coined it.

Onwards and upwards. A new Sixth Form block, more schools joining the multi-academy trust and more of our children achieving the great results that they deserve because of their hard work and commitment. There are challenges ahead but I believe we are strong enough and equipped to handle whatever comes our way.

Judi Dumont-BarterChair of Local Academy Committee, Chestnut Grove

Students are expected to attend the Academy every day with the expectation that each student should achieve a minimum 95% attendance.

Sickness:If for any reason a student will be absent then Parents/Carers are requested to phone the Attendance Officer (Ms Ramsay on 0208 673 8737 option 1) before 08:30 on the first day of absence. If the absence is for more than one day, you will need to phone the school each day of the sickness. A doctor’s note will be required after three days absence.

Lateness:Morning registration starts at 8.45am. Students arriving after 8.45am will not be admitted through the main gate and will be asked to sign in at reception. Students will be marked late by the attendance officer and parents will receive a text informing them that the student has a same day detention to make up the number of minutes late. Students who are late and have a note from their Parent/Carer explaining the lateness, should report directly to the Attendance Officer before going to class. Students who arrive after 10am with no parental explanation are considered absent and are recorded as such on the Academy roll.

Appointments:The Attendance Officer should be alerted to appointments attended during the school day, by a note in your child’s planner, which should also be accompanied by the appointment letter or copy of the confirmation text received.

Please do not call, email or text the school if your child needs to leave school early for an appointment as their note will suffice. This note must be authorised by your child’s RSL (Raising Standards Leader) before they can leave.

Ms Ramsay, Attendance Officer

Netball Year 8 The Year 8 girls played an away fixture at Graveney. This is always one of the hardest games in the league so the girls knew they had to work hard and put in a strong performance. They started the game at a great tempo, passing was good and movement was excellent. In order to win the game they knew limited fouls needed to be conceded and they had to take their chances. Graveney led 6-5 at half time. The girls had done everything right and knew they still had so much more to give in the final two quarters. Graveney came out even stronger in the third quarter, the girls found it difficult to slow down the game and intercept their passes. Graveney led 10-7. Chestnut were still determined to go out and get a result. Again they increased the intensity of the game. They were able to play the ball forward quicker and this allowed them to take 5 of the 7 chances created. Chestnut went on to win the game 12-11. Excellent team performance all round! Well done.

This now puts the girls in a very strong position to go on and win the league. Their final game will be played at home to Ashcroft. Y8 team:Zoe, Isabella, Rowan, Wiktoria, Ralitsa, Jessica, Nikeria, Sophie, Malika, Charlie, Lauren

Football Year 7Another great effort from the Year 7 football team in their game against St John Bosco. The conditions were horrendous for this match; playing on a waterlogged pitch is never much fun and the boys knew they had a difficult game ahead of them when they saw the puddle riddled pitch on arrival to Wandsworth Common. Nevertheless, motivation was high and the students put in a performance to remember. The first 15 minutes passed with little action, the ball mainly being played around in the muddy midfield. Some fantastic passing between Finlay, Angus and James created an opening for De-Andre to slot home the first goal – we were up and running! We controlled the majority of the remaining time in the first half, but appeared to lose concentration for a short spell, the outcome of which led to two goals from the opposition just before the half time whistle. The squad were given an encouraging team talk by Mr Adusei and came out firing in the second half. Despite numerous opportunities, it just seemed like it was going to be one of those days when the ball did everything but find the net again. With one minute remaining, Angus cut their midfield to shreds and was fouled on the edge of the box just as he was about to shoot. This was surely our last opportunity to get a draw. As Angus placed the ball down to take the kick, one of our substitutes shouted “go on, make a name for yourself”. His curling free-kick felt as though it was in slow motion - Bang, top bins, an excellent goal which gave us a well-deserved point.

Final Score 2-2

Mr Gulley

Congratulations to the Year 8 football team who have made the final of the Year 8 Cup and will play Ashcroft in the final on May 7th .

DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZE EXPEDITION

On the last weekend in March, 60 students from Year 9 took part in a Bronze D of E expedition in the Box Hill area. After meeting early at Clapham Junction the group took a train to Dorking then assembled in groups ready to walk for 4-5 hours to our campsite. All 9 groups managed to reach the campsite in good time and had a chance to improve their map & compass work. Once the tents were up students cooked their meals, played “manhunt” in the woods and enjoyed a camp fire.

After a restful few hours’ sleep we had breakfast, did a clean-up and headed back to Dorking station by different routes.

Well done to all the students who attended - looking forward to the next trip I would suggest packing lighter, reading the routecard, and accepting there will be spiders and you probably don’t need to scream quite so loudly when you meet one.

A big thanks to all staff who gave up their weekend.

The Linnean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society. Founded in 1788 by Sir James Edward Smith (1759–1828), who was its first president. The Society takes its name from the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) whose botanical, zoological and library collections have been in its keeping since 1829. These unique collections are of continuing fundamental importance as a primary reference for taxonomy. They are enhanced by the Society’s own rich library which provides key resources for research. The BioMedia Meltdown is the competition where science and art collide for students aged 11–14. This project, led and funded by the society, gives students the opportunity to show off their understanding of scientific topics utilising a wide variety of media.Chestnut Grove student undertook a workshop in November 2018 and 11 of our students were selected as finalists and invited to attend an awards evening at The Linnean Society. Throughout the year, students have been reading and judging fiction books for the FAB book awards. Now in its 10th year, FAB is an award where students from schools across Wandsworth choose their favourite book of the year. This year’s shortlist, consisting of 7 books, was incredibly strong and students battled over who the winner should be. The winner was announced at a ceremony last week at Burntwood School. Students chose Dear Martin by Nic Stone as the best book they have read this year. Dear Martin is an incredible story of a young African-American boy, Justyce, who is destined for an Ivy league education until he becomes a victim of racial profiling. Justyce writes letters to Martin Luther King to help him make sense of the world around him. It is a very emotional, powerful and important story and FAB students and staff would encourage everyone to read it.As part of the ceremony, students had to do a presentation representing one of the FAB books. Chestnut Grove represented Tender by Eve Ainsworth, a beautiful story of two young people from totally contrasting backgrounds but both are carers within their families and struggling to cope with their responsibilities. Students chose to do a stop motion and a dance for their presentation. Many people at the ceremony spoke to students and staff after the event to say how emotional and lovely they thought our students presentation was. The author, who was in attendance, was moved to tears by their performance and said in her speech that she was struggling to talk because she still felt so emotional. Well done to all the students for such excellent work. Other authors at the event included Ross Welford, Alexander Gordon Smith, Lisa Heathfield and Rachel Ward. Authors gave speeches that made students think about the world, made them laugh and there was even some magic! Students had a wonderful day and are looking forward to next year!

Following on from the last newsletter, we have now been sent the finished video of students talking about their impressions and thoughts after watching a presentation from Book Aid. BOOK REVIEW

See How They Lie by Sue Wallman – Review by Olivia Ray 7 Hepworth

I really enjoyed reading this book because there was always something interesting happening and it never got boring or slow. I definitely recommend this book to people who like mystery stories. The book is about a girl that grows up in a wellness retreat for troubled teens, which is owned by her father. The retreat has strict rules and controls every aspect of their lives. Breaking the rules is very dangerous and can even be life threatening. This made it very exciting to read. I recommend this book for 12-16 year olds because of some of the content of the story.

ART SPECIALISTS TRIP TO BARCELONA

Art Specialists students attended a four day Art residential to Barcelona last week. The 60 students who attended the residential visited a variety of galleries including the Picasso Museum, Dali Museum, the Barcelona gallery of Modern Art, as well as a 4D cinema show, which was based on the work of Gaudi.

Students and staff made the most of the wonderful sunshine, spending many hours sketching the beautiful architecture around Barcelona. Students worked extremely hard whilst they were away and walked many miles, taking in all the sights of Barcelona. It was an absolute pleasure taking such a delightful group of Art Specialists to Barcelona, looking forward to 2020 residential already.

HAMILTON

On Tuesday 2nd April, a selection of Year 10 students were taken to the Victoria Palace Theatre to see the West End show Hamilton. This show follows the life of one of the founding fathers of the United States, using hip-hop and rap to convey his tale. It was a special educational show with a Q&A at the end, which allowed students to hear the actors’ journey to being on a hit West End musical. The students were impeccably behaved and really enjoyed the whole experience. They really did make Chestnut Grove proud!

YEAR 8

How is it already Easter? With two terms done and dusted Year 8 is truly flying by. Up and coming we have a few important dates I would like to draw your attention to:

• The summer term begins on 23rd April. On that day we will be checking uniform as the students come back from the long break. Any disappearing ties, bags or exploding shoes please let myself and tutors know in advance

• KS3 End of year exams start on 7th May for two weeks, keep an eye out for more information closer to the time.

• Year 8 parents evening on 20th June. A little far down the line but just something for the diary. Attendance was fantastic last year and showcased the support from home for our year group.

This week: Zoe overwhelmed by the joy of reading!

YEAR 9 The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze weekend was a huge success, where the numbers of those that were in attendance was outstanding! Unfortunately, I was not able to go on the weekend as planned. However, I have heard the students behaved impeccably and had a fantastic time. All students made it back to camp without too many wrong turns and one group even made it back early (oh dear). A great learning curve for all.

The Year 9 tests are now over and the students are looking forward to a well-deserved rest! I want to take the time to congratulate the students involved with the recent assistant head interviews. You all represented the school and more importantly Year 9 immensely. I spoke with the candidates and they mentioned the Year 9 students in particular as fantastic! A big well done and thank you to, Ella, Stefan, and Lateisha.

Performing Arts

The Year 10 GCSE dance class have recently been involved in the Performing Arts dance show. They did amazingly well with Ms Crawford returning for a visit and saying that it was a great piece. Wiktoria Kolterman performed a fabulous solo in the show and Wiktoria and Siyam were also in Magnus’s choreography which was performed in the dance show and the Year 11 exam.

YEAR 11

Congratulations to all of the students who have been focused on their PPE’s over the past few weeks. Their behaviour going into the exam hall last week was absolutely superb and both Ms Davies and I were very pleased with their conduct inside the hall. A reminder that students need to have their equipment in a clear plastic pencil case for the formal exams starting in May and that labels also need to be removed from any water bottles that they may take into the hall with them. Ms Davies has now given all of the students the timetable for Easter Revision sessions and it is on the Academy website as well. If students are running late on the day of an exam, it is vital that you contact the school to inform us, preferably prior to the exam starting.

You will be pleased to know that the hoodies have now been ordered, and that attention now turns to the wonderful graduation ceremony and boat party that will be held on the 28th June. This is something for everyone to look forward to and will be a lovely, positive end to our Key Stage 4 journey at Chestnut Grove. More details about this will be coming in future newsletters and via email.

I hope that all of you have a lovely Easter holiday and hope that the students use this time wisely in their revision and preparation for their exams.

Year 12 Higher Education Day and UCAS Convention - ExCel Centre, London

Well done to all Level 3 students who attended this event. The morning session in school focused on providing advice, information and guidance to all students about how to write an effective personal statement and on what goes into the school reference. The afternoon session saw Year 12 Level 3 students attend the ExCel Centre for the UCAS Convention, where students could visit stands from all the universities across Britain and find out what each university had to offer by way of courses, pathways and any bursary or scholarships.

Year 12 Level 2 students were engaged in a series of skills workshops supported by outside agencies and our own independent careers advisor, Mr Tierney.

Feedback from students and staff was incredibly positive and the day appears to have fired up our students to work even harder to secure the necessary grades for entry onto their chosen courses.

Behaviour on the day was exemplary.

Well done Year 12!
