MISSION STATEMENT

Communication is the process of sending or receiving ideas, thoughts and feelings

through a channel i.e. verbal or non verbal means. An effective communication is when the

receiver understands the message in the same way as the sender. In the health care setup,

communication is an integral part of profession. Communication skills form the basis of other

soft skills. Poor communication skills results in poor negotiating capacity and also difficulty in

adopting a positive mind set. All the degree programs offered at Chettinad Academy of Research

and Education adopt a holistic approach wherein the learners are trained in technical skills as

well as those soft skills mentioned earlier, during the first year of their academic course itself ,

during sessions moderated by trained in-house faculty as well as external consultants.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ON NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

SKILLS

During this training program held over three sessions on 04/11/2016, the facilitators, Mrs.

Savitha Niren, Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, CHRI and Ms. Princy A. S.,

Assistant Professor, Faculty of AHS, revealed that more than 55% of communication accounts to

the non-verbal mode and that it creates an impact both on the audience as well as an impression

about the person communicating. Greeting, handshake, eye contact, smiling are some of the

positive non verbal communication methods. The participants were given two activities. One

activity was to communicate with higher-ups / superiors / teachers and the other activity was to

communicate with peer groups / colleagues. Proper gestures and how to use them were

elucidated. Non-verbal communication skills program mainly focused on body language during

communication. The facilitators of the program emphasized the importance of body language at

rest as well as during movement, tone of the voice and also attire. Other activities in small

groups included delivering various types of messages like declaration of results, untoward

incidents, promotion or vacation with appropriate tone and gestures. Following this session, tips

and corrections to improve were provided by the experts. The sessions ended after an informal

feedback was taken from the participants wherein all admitted to increased awareness of the

various modalities through which non verbal communication occurs as well as the absolute

requirement of such training programs.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – DIGITAL PAYMENT AWARENESS

A digital payment awareness programme was conducted on 16/02/2017 with 100

volunteers including the students of Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and Chettinad College of

Nursing, CARE. These students accompanied by Dr. Koyeli Girigoswami and Dr. Venu Gopala

Rao Konda,, visited nearly 100 shops in the Kelambakkam market. The volunteers were trained

with a PowerPoint presentation available in MHRD website on VISAKA, and were made aware

of the points of relevance to communicate to the shopkeepers. Pamphlets were taken both in

English and Tamil to make the shopkeepers as well as customers understand the importance of

digital payment. Many shops already had the PoS machines and some customers and

shopkeepers were using PayTm for transactions. There was a very good response from the public

as well as the shopowners in the market.

PROGRAM - RALLY FOR RIVERS

The NSS Unit of CARE organized a Rally for Rivers on 27/09/2017, in collaboration with

the Chennai Chapter of Isha Yoga Foundation, as part of NSS Day celebrations. Many students

from CCN and FAHS participated in the rally which was held inside the campus of CHRI. The

chief guests were Ms. Usha Rao and Ms Lakshmi Prasanna from Isha Yoga foundation. An oral

presentation informed about the importance of rivers in India, how the rivers are drying up, that

50% of the rivers in India will not have enough water by 2030 and many rivers do not meet the

ocean for many months due to lack of water because of trees being cut on both sides of the

rivers. A proposal to rejuvenate the rivers was to plant tall trees for upto 1 Km on both sides of

the rivers, in order to allow precipitation and cause rain. Everyone attending the program was

urged to give a missed call at 8000980009 in order to vote for this proposal. The students were

shown motivational videos followed by the rally.

PROGRAM - POSITIVE CITIZENS POSITIVE NATION

The NSS unit of CARE along with FAHS, CARE, organized an awareness program on

12/06/2018 for keeping individual’s place of residence as well as surrounding locality clean, in

order to disseminate positive energy in the society and betterment of the nation. The venue was

Thaiyur village and around thirty-odd students of FAHS volunteered for this initiative under

“Positive citizens Positive nation” banner. Many villagers were unaware of the concept that

keeping the locality clean is also very important along with keeping their house clean. In many

homes in Eri Ethir Vaiyal (a village under Thaiyur panchayat) garbage was just thrown out into

the open areas along the sides of the roads. The students were divided into four groups and each

group went on a door to door to awareness campaign regarding the cleanliness management of

one’s house and also the locality. The residents were counseled and made to understand that if

we take initiatives to keep our own locality clean, then the nation will also become clean. The

residents were convinced about this idea and assured that they shall take steps to implement the

same.

PROGRAM – AWARENESS ON “HOW TO TAKE MEDICINES”

An awareness program on “How to intake medicines” was conducted in Hindustan

International School, Padur and Velammal Vidhyashram School, Padur, by the Department of

Pharmacology, CHRI, on the 16th and 17th of November 2018, along with some student

volunteers belonging to the third semester MBBS. A total of 100 students participated altogether

wherein the importance of taking oral medicines in the right way as advised by the doctors was

explained. The common suffixes and prefixes utilized in brand name of drugs such as Capsule,

SR etc. were described. The reasoning behind why some drugs need to be taken before food,

why the medicines need to be taken at prescribed dosages only and why twice daily implies once

every 12 hours, were some of the points discussed. The students were very inquisitive and many

of them cleared their doubts regarding usage of medications. The teachers also appreciated this

effort taken towards making the students aware.

THROWAWAY PLASTICS

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and Chettinad College of Nursing, Chettinad

Academy of Research and Education, organized an awareness campaign regarding the ban on

one time use and throwaway plastics, which was geared towards the general public, in

association with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. This involved a road rally by 300

2019. The rally began from the Hospital block and covered the above mentioned areas, with the

use of banners displaying the banned items and the alternatives, made from biodegradable

material. This rally was followed by guest lecture by Dr. Aneesha, who explored the virtues of

the ban on plastics and demonstrated from her own lifestyle about how far a person can get

motivated in order to avoid plastics. The prize distribution for an oratory contest on the same

theme held on 21st December 2018 followed the guest lecture. The contest was conducted both in
