We did it, Chicago. We survived the winter. By the time this magazine is in your hands, snow-buried sidewalks and polar vortices will exist only in our memories—hopefully. It was a tough one, but nothing makes you appreci-

ate spring more than a bone-chilling winter.

Warm temperatures bring an influx of road races to the Chicago area, and perhaps none is more popular than the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K. Heading into its 35th year, the unofficial start to the racing season steps off on March 30 in Grant Park. With a new course and large field, the event promises to be better than ever. Check out all the details you need to know for race day on page 34.

If you’d like to challenge yourself in a new way this season, consider taking on a unique distance race. On page 44, Erin Crowell introduces us to a variety of races around Chicagoland that venture away from the traditional 5K, 10K or half marathon distances. Running a new distance may be just the spark your season needs, and, for first-timers, guarantees a PR.

For even more inspiration for your season, be sure to check out the profiles of our 2013 Clif Bar Athletes of the Year, Michael Cauley and Shelley Cook. Both Cauley and Cook had incredible years in 2013 in road racing and ultra running. Find out more about who they are as athletes and what keeps them going on page 30.

Whether you’re looking for a race or looking for your results, be sure to check out our web-site, www.mychicagoathlete.com, for all the most up-to-date calendar and comprehensive results resource in the area.

See you on the roads!

J enifer Maggio needed a creative outlet. e four-time Ironman fi nisher from Bartlett worked as a graphic designer for magazines and

ad agencies, but craved a schedule that allowed her more fl exibility to spend time with her young family while earning a living and training for triathlons. In search of a way to use her artistic talents, Maggio turned to jewelry making and found herself with a new business.

“My friends loved my designs and began asking to buy them,” Maggio says. “A jewelry company was born.”

Athlete Inspired, Maggio’s company, produces necklaces, bracelets and shoe tags with an athletic fl air. e jewelry line, with styles designed for men and women, is meant to fi t an active lifestyle more than traditional jewelry.

“As I became more serious about training I found myself wearing less skirts and heels and mores span-

dex and workout clothes,” Maggio says. “ at didn’t call for fancy jewelry, but I’m a fan of wearing jew-elry. I wanted something that complemented my casual attire and I couldn’t fi nd what I was looking for. I was looking for something athletic and bold that motivated and inspired me.”

In addition to providing accessories for multisport athletes, Maggio has also partnered with local schools and running clubs to provide them with an alternative to traditional fundraisers.

“It’s something diff erent than wrapping paper and chocolate,” Maggio says. “So many cross country and track teams and schools are looking for more help fi nancially and this is a great way to not only give them something to wear but to get more fund-ing for the team.”

A new bicycle store with a unique mission will open its doors in March. BFF Bikes, a shop designed to cater to the needs of women

bikers located at 2113 W. Armitage, will be the first Midwest store to join a growing collection of bike retailers around the country targeting women.

“I felt like it wasn’t a matter of if but when women’s focused bike shops would open in Chicago,” co-owner Vanessa Buccella says. “It felt like more of a risk to not open [the store] than open it.”

Buccella, one of several women behind the Meetup group Illinois Women Cyclists, approached Annie Byrne, another woman involved in Illinois Women Cyclists with the idea for the store after thinking of the tagline, “Community geared for women,” and from there came the concept of BFF Bikes.

“Based on our experience and what we know about our friends that bike, bike shops have so much potential

for women to get more involved and have a place to get everything they need to be part of the community,” Byrne, who also co-owns BFF Bikes, says. “It was an opportunity to do something different.”

Bucella and Byrne, both active bike commuters and racers, hope to make the community an integral part of their store through events designed to help educate cyclists and foster a sense of unity.

“We’re going to have a lot of events from education-al workshops like how to do basic bike maintenance to racing clinics for people interested in starting to race,” Byrne says. “We also want to do fun social things like movie nights and ways to learn about products and clothing. We want to be not just a bike shop but grow the community and be part of the community.”

in 2011, Jessica Murphy wanted to run a spring marathon. after training through a tough winter and spending a significant amount of money on entry and travel fees, Murphy had a poor experience at her marathon. in an effort to prevent this from happening to other runners, Murphy and her husband tim created BibRave, a website where runners can review events and share their race experiences.

“the whole reason we started BibRave was to create a community where runners could share their experiences with other runners who are in the process of selecting their next race,” tim Murphy says. “after all the costs of registering, training and potentially traveling for a race, runners expect and deserve a great experience.”

Race directors or runners can enter an event into the system, and from there runners can rate a race based on a va-riety of factors, including overall quality, elevation difficulty, aid station support and race management. Currently, the site has a Chicago focus but is open to any race submission.

top 50 MultiSport retAilerSTriathlon Business International and slowtwitch.com included six Illinois stores amongst their Top 50 Multisport Retailers in the United States. The list, announced in late January at the 2014 North Ameri-can TBI Industry Conference, reveals the results of a voting process that weighted 80 percent on supplier votes and 20 per-cent on consumer votes. Element Multi-sport in Chicago, Get a Grip Cycles in Chicago, Naperville Running Company in Naperville, Running Away Multisport in both Deerfield and Chicago and Urban Tri Gear in Westmont all made the list.

Suppliers could choose three to six retailers per region in nine geographic areas and considered technical brand and knowledge, triathlon-related in-store inventory, service to the community, knowledge of triathlon and other customer services such as race spon-sorship and training rides. Consumers voted on nine categories from inventory breadth and depth to staff product knowledge.

Athletes who want filtered water on the go but also want to use drink additives have a new option with FIT Top wa-ter bottles. Unlike traditional filtering water bottles that purify water as the user drinks, the FIT Top filters water as it’s added to the bottle. After filling the bottle, users close the filter, which allows them to add protein powder, flavor packets or other additives to their water without concern that the filter will eliminate the additive. FIT Top bottles currently come in 14 or 24 oz. sizes and can be purchased at www.FitTopUSA.com.

U SA Track & Field, the U.S. Olympic Committee, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and LA MARATHON LLC

announced in late January that the City of Los Angeles will host the Women’s and Men’s 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon. The trials will take place on Feb. 13, 2016, and will be carried in their entirety on NBC.

“We are thrilled with what Los Angeles will provide to our athletes, the Olympic movement and the sport of long distance running by hosting this event,” US-ATF CEO Max Siegel said in a press release. “With television coverage on NBC and incredible public and private support for the race in one of the world’s big-gest media markets, everything is in place to continue to elevate the Olympic Trials and give our athletes a platform on which they can truly shine.”

The LA Marathon, traditionally held in March, will have the 2016 race in February to allow po-tential Olympians optimal time to recover before the 2016 Olympic Trials for Track & Field, should they choose to participate in both events. The LA Marathon will occur on Feb. 14, 2016, the day after the trials, to make for a weekend that celebrates all levels of road racing.

Los Angeles, Houston and Cincinnati all placed bids with the USATF to host the 2016 trials. The trials in Los Angeles will be the second time the men’s and women’s races have taken place together, with the first time being in Houston in 2012.

More information on start times and course specifics will be released in the coming months.

Melissa stone Cooney From turkey trots with her dad to a finish line proposal at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2010, running and family have always been intertwined for Melissa Stone Cooney. Stone Cooney, who works in strategic partnership and corporate wellness for the Chicago Area Runners Association, now trains on a weekly basis with CARA members and calls them her running family. Coming off of a stress fracture in eight of her toes,

Stone Cooney wasn’t sure how she’d recover this year. After taking five months off and missing nearly all of the 2013 race season, the 34 year old stayed active by spin-ning, getting in the pool and doing yoga. Her first big race back was the F^3 Lake Half Marathon in late January. Despite brutal winter conditions, Stone Cooney pushed out ahead of the pack early and by mile two she decided to see what she could do. Her training paid off, and she finished as the first overall woman with a time of 1:26:37. Going forward, Stone-Cooney plans to continue pushing herself. While she com-petes in distances and events of all kinds she is staying focused on her favorite distance, the marathon.

Dave CalDwell Just a few years ago Dave Caldwell felt unhealthy. After starting with a few laps at work, he built his endurance. Now, Caldwell is pushing the podium at ultramarathons. In the three years since he started running competitively, Caldwell has become one of the top endurance runners in the area. Three times in the last year he found himself in the top two overall, including a second place finish at the Fro-zen Gnome 10K Trail Race in mid-January. Caldwell also

posted a top ten overall time and age group victory at the Chicago Lakefront 50K. The 35 year old says the ultra distance is his favorite, giving him the opportunity to use his speed and endurance over the impressive distance. With a young family, Caldwell said training for races can be more difficult. However, he will still work towards some of his annual favorite races including the Chicago Lakefront 50K and Fort2Base. The Chicagoan also works with Team Red White and Blue Trail Running Camp in Texas where he and fellow runners help military veterans acclimate to civilian life through running.

Her journey to healthy living brought her to endurance sports and ultimately led her to Imerman Angels, an organization designed to provide one-on-one support for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers: the exact support Masoud wanted but could not find during her first experience with cancer.

Masoud, now the manager of recruitment for Team Imerman Angels, has completed 48 endurance events ranging from 5Ks to triathlons wearing the blue and white Imerman Angels jersey. She shows no signs of slowing down, even after another brush with cancer in the form of stage I melanoma in 2012.

“A lot of cancer survivors want to challenge ourselves because we beat death,” Masoud says. “Whatever we thought we couldn’t do we want to start doing.”

From the start of her involvement in endurance sports, Masoud knew she wanted to run for a cause.

Having meaning behind her participation helps her stay motivated to push herself to new lengths.

“Doing [endurance sports] for a cause was a major motivation for me,” Masoud says. “When you start thinking about how you’re helping others it’s more rewarding. That’s what kept me working out and eat-ing better and helping people who can’t run. We’re very thankful. We survived. We can walk, we can do all that stuff. Why not do it for those who can’t?”

In the coming year, Masoud plans to compete in the ITU World Triathlon Chicago and run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, which she ran for the first time in 2013.

“I’m planning to do a half Ironman in August,” Masoud says. “I haven’t registered yet because I want to be ready for it but it would be a huge accomplishment. This year for sure is the year where I want to kick it up a notch and do a marathon and half Ironman.”

Masoud also serves as a Mentor Angel for Imerman Angels, providing support and understanding to those going through an experience similar to hers.

“If anyone would ever call or seek support I could be someone [Imerman Angels] reaches out to to help [the caller] and help them go through their journey,” Masoud says of her role as a Mentor An-gel. “It’s awesome. It’s definitely the most humbling and rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”

Even with all the training that goes into training for endurance sports, Masoud still makes time for other ways of staying healthy. Yoga in par-ticular has had an incredible positive impact on her mental health.

“I’ve been in yoga almost two years, and it’s the number one thing I recommend,” she says. “A lot of us after cancer get on so many meds. It took me six years to get off meds, and it was through yoga. For the first time in six years I’ve been two months off meds. Some people don’t get off anti-anxiety or anti-depressant [medication] for life, but yoga, running and doing triathlons for charity were so much more powerful for me than anything a doctor gave me.”

I taught swimming at the local YMCA for my fi rst job during high school. ere, I realized how impor-tant early swim lessons are for children. In the Parent and Tot class, babies as young as six months old were naturals in the water, blowing bubbles, holding their breath, opening their eyes and generally just having a great time with their parents. Older fi rst-time swim-mers were increasingly cautious and fearful when they came to us and much more of a challenge to teach. But every kid can learn how to swim and this should be a non-negotiable goal for all children.

LESSONS WORKAccording to the Centers for Disease Control, approxi-mately 10 people drown every day in the U.S. and many are children younger than 14. If a child participates in swimming lessons, his or her risk of drowning drops by 88 percent (USA Swimming Foundation and the University of Memphis). If a parent does not know how to swim, there is only a small chance that his or her children will learn how to swim. Even if the parents do know how to swim, taking formal lessons is well worth the cost and time commitment. An experienced swim instructor will lead the swimmers progressively through skills needed to enjoy learning how to swim. I found swim lessons to be the fi rst formal activity that I enjoyed with both of my kids when they were still babies. From there, we kept up with year round lessons until they both could confi dently swim.

COMPETITIONOnce your child is a confi dent swimmer, you have fulfi lled your most important parental safety ob-

ligation. (Of course, kids always need supervision while swimming.) But what if your child seems to want more? It can be fun to try competitive swim-ming. Kids as young as 7 or 8 may be ready to try the structure of a swim team. Good swim teams have fun, age appropriate programs. Look into your nearest park district, YMCA or public pool for swim team options. Keep the focus on fun. Don’t get caught up with the swim performances of your child. Instead, enjoy the fact that they are develop-ing strong bodies, good friends and skills that will last a lifetime.

ADVANTAGES OF SWIMMINGAs an activity, swimming is outstanding. e abil-ity to swim greatly lessens the incidence of drown-ing, the second most common form of unintentional injury-related death in children after motor vehicle accidents. Almost as importantly, swimming skill opens up the door to many other activities like boat-ing, canoeing, fi shing and splashing around with friends during the summer months. Competitive swimming creates strong, disciplined endurance ath-letes who can turn their fi tness into other pursuits like running or the booming sport of youth triath-lon. On a swim team, every swimmer can race and all have the same opportunity to better his or her per-sonal best times. And fi nally, injuries are uncommon with good coaches.

So get those youngsters into some swim lessons and open up the door to a healthy activity that they can do well into old age.

MICHAEL CAULEY MICHAEL CAULEY began distance running in eighth grade when he discovered that four laps around a track seemed easy. After main-taining a three-sport schedule as a high school student, Cauley kept up with football and track for two years at Otterbein University in Ohio before trading in his football cleats for cross country spikes.

“At that point my running took a complete turn,” Cauley says. “Within about a year it was amazing the difference I had seen not only in my body and the way it changed but also in my running times.”

When he moved to Illinois a few years after college, Cauley joined the Dick Pond Fast Track team and became competitive on the CARA Run-ners Choice Circuit, fi nishing fourth overall and second in the 30-34 age group in 2011. In 2013, Cauley took third overall in the circuit and won the 30-34 age group, despite no longer living in the Chicago area.

“I moved to Ohio a year ago,” Cauley says. “During that time I was still racing on the circuit, still had all these races planned and goals to achieve. I commuted from Ohio to Illinois both for work purposes because I still work for the same company in Illinois but also to run 5Ks, 10Ks and just running in general.”

Cauley competed in a variety of Chicagoland races in 2013 and fi nished with victories in the Home Team Charity 10K in July and the Fort2Base nautical 10 miler in August. Though Cauley has run nearly every distance imaginable throughout his career, he says he is most passionate about the 5K and 10K.

“It’s easy to focus on the shorter events because I feel like in some regard you can almost fake fi tness, meaning you don’t necessarily have to put in a ton in order to have decent results,” Cauley says. “I’ve done a couple marathons and when you look at my times there’s a disconnect between what I’ve run in shorter races versus what I’ve run in longer races. What I’ve found is to really prepare for the marathon and run the time I think I’m capable of I don’t have the right approach, the right mentality. I don’t put the time into the training. Because of that, I like to stay between 5K, 10K, 10 miles or a half marathon. Those are things I like to go towards.”

To improve his running, Cauley reconnected with his college coach last year in search of a training regimen. His coach put together a plan, and Cauley soon found himself performing on a higher level than ever before.

“After going back to my coach and working with him for about eight weeks I ran my fi rst 5K of 2013 and had about a 30-second PR in that short period of time,” Cauley says. “I started the year on fi re and was incredibly excited.”

Towards the end of the season Cauley began to develop injuries, which hampered his ability to race as hard as he had hoped. Though he didn’t achieve his goal of winning the CARA circuit, he says he is still pleased with the 2013 season as a whole and looks forward to tackling more races in 2014.

SHELLEY COOK had a banner year in 2013. After starting the year with a fi rst place fi nish in her age group at the S-NO-W Fun Run, Cook went on to have 12 more fi rst place age group fi nishes and six overall fi rst place fi nishes in distances ranging from a 5K at the North Shore Cu-pid’s Love Dash to 100 miles at the Kettle Moraine 100.

Cook began running in 1998 to lose weight but discovered that the sport provided much more than a way to cultivate a healthier lifestyle.

“I quickly found that I enjoyed the competitive aspect of running and racing,” Cook says. “It wasn’t so much competing against others, but more just seeing how far I could push myself.”

After years as a road runner and marathoner, Cook decided to tackle her fi rst ultra, the 2009 Lakefront 50K, three weeks after fi nishing sev-enth in the WhistleStop Marathon. She won the race, but the sense of community she found in ultra running had a far greater impact on her.

What I really took away from that day was the feeling of togetherness that you feel during an ultra,” Cook says. “That feeling is what drew me to ultras and what keeps me running them.”

In the coming year, Cook hopes to fi nish in the top three at the Ice Age 50 in May. Doing so would earn her an automatic entry into the Western States 100, which she fi rst ran after being chosen through the lottery in 2011.

“It was a daunting challenge,” Cook says. “I didn’t fi nish, but I con-sider this to be one of my biggest accomplishments. It was so hard and so scary. Coming from fl at Illinois and trying to run in the Sierra Nevadas and making it 78 miles was a huge accomplishment for me.”

Events like Western States and other ultras may be an enormous chal-lenge, but Cook hopes that by taking on these tough races, she sets a positive example for her nine-year-old daughter Miina.

“I am not one to sugar coat things and make life seem pretty and easy,” Cook says. “Life isn’t perfect. There is adversity, a lot of moun-tains and you won’t always succeed. It’s my hope that by setting a positive example for her, and by setting ‘almost impossible, but if you work really hard you can do it’ type goals, she will grow into a strong, independent woman… She will see what happens when even if you give everything you’ve got, and you fall short, she will see that life goes on and will see it with grace. When you put everything you have into something, there simply isn’t failure involved.”

Cook is also particularly grateful to Jenny Spangler and the Jenny Spangler Racing Team, the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Running Club, The MUDD Runners and New Leaf Ultra Runs for the support she’s received throughout her journey.

“I truly believe the reason why I do so well is because I have so many people that support me,” she says. “The ultra community is very special to me, and I am so honored to be a part of it.”

The latest Zoom Structure 17 provides subtle improvements over last year’s model, boasting Flywire technology in the arch which adapts to foot movement and provides a snug, supportive fit. A moderate stability shoe, the Structure 17 offers a smooth ride with a wedged midsole, adaptive crash pad for smooth foot transition, and a bright, reflective upper—a new aesthetic in many Nike models aimed at promoting low-light visibility. The Zoom Structure 17 provides slight alterations to its previous model throughout, casting an overall likable and familiar running experience.

The Speedform is a new shoe from Under Armour, a resurgent brand in the running shoe world. The shoe boasts a snug and contoured fit throughout the heel cup and midfoot while still providing ample toe room. With a 6mm drop and a moderately-cushioned platform throughout the midsole, this lightweight shoe is sure to make a splash this Spring for a brand looking to re-enter the market in a big way.

The 890v4 is the heralded new version of the standard New Balance staple, providing a seamless upper, redesigned EVA and blown-rubber outsole, and an overall foot feel that mirrors the comfort and performance of its predecessors—all in a model which is an ounce lighter than ever. The REVlite midsole and no-sew upper create a performance-minded shoe with a slim profile and cushioning in all the right places.

NewtondiStance elite

The Newton Distance Elite is the company’s first lightweight shoe, pairing Newton’s characteristic forefoot lugs with a lighter, slimmer shoe. The lugs, along with the shoes’ midsole and upper, are slimmer than in other models. This provides a more gradual entry into the company’s unique design for runners looking to dip a toe in the water, or a lighter frame for those already familiar with Newton’s designs. Testers loved the lighter shoe and the smaller lugs, finding them to provide just the right amount of spring without getting in the way.

The PureFlow 3 sports a fresh new look and the first full update of both the upper and sole unit since its first launch. The shoe is still the softest model in the collection, and remains true to the philosophies that make it a PureProject Shoe. This newest itineration has increased the IDEAL heel bevel providing a 360 degree point of contact. Repositioning of the Toeflex to include the first two toes, not just the big one, promises increased power through toe-off along with greater independence. Finally the Nav Band has changed materials from fabric to silicon, and has been integrated into the midsole on the medial side. These changes hope to bring about a more consistent conformable fit to the mid foot of the shoe.

DISTANCE

NOTYOUR AVERAGE

Although it’s Chicago’s fi rst quarter marathon, the race joins a growing number of running events off ering distances outside the traditional 5K, 10K or half marathon.

roughout the country, people are running 7Ks on St. Patrick’s Day, four miles on the Fourth of July and, in the southwest suburb of La Grange, 3.14 miles on anksgiving for pie.

THE MAGIC OF THE MARATHON “ e race market has become saturated with 5Ks and 10Ks, so you have to think outside the box with races these days,” Karyn Serota, race director of Special Events Management, says. “Our goal was to bring a new type of race to the Chicago area. We wanted to off er the hype of running a marathon without having to run the distance of a marathon.”

Essentially, participants are running a 10K, but by attaching the word ‘marathon,’ the race takes on new meaning and bigger purpose, Serota adds.

For Jeff Chamberlain, years in traffi c helped him realize the magic behind the numbers of a marathon.

“I’ve been sitting behind cars with their 26.2 bumper stickers and always thought it would be fun to move that decimal point over,” he says.

Today, Got2Run is a 2.62-mile race in Arlington Heights that encourages children and their families to pick up the sport of running.

e third annual Got2Run takes place May 17 and includes a training program for beginners, along with an 8K route for those looking for a longer run. e race committee designs both routes so parents can start the fi rst 2.62 miles with their children and continue on a bit farther.

“Although we advertise in the school districts, the 2.62 race is for anyone who is just starting to run,” Chamberlain says. “Even though it’s a shorter distance, people are really proud of themselves when they fi nish.”

Even if the concept of running a 5K intimidates beginners, the race website off ers a time converter for those who wish to calculate how their 2.62 mile race time would translate into a 5K fi nish.

STEPPING STONESSerota says the Chicago Quarter Marathon serves as a stepping stone, both for beginners and those training for a half or full marathon, which is why it takes place in April: the start of race season.

Gittelman plans to use the Quarter Marathon to train for the 2014 Boston Marathon, set for Monday, April 21.

“( e Quarter Marathon) is a few weeks before Boston, so it’s kind of a last tune-up run for me,” Gittelman says.

While Gittelman was one of only a few to take advantage of the Quarter Marathon’s initial 25-cent price, organizers wanted to increase participation by off ering reasonable “quarter themed” price increments.

“The race market has become saturated with 5Ks and 10Ks, so you have to think outside the box with races these days. Our goal was to bring a new type of race to the Chicago area.” —Karyn Serota

The next 225 to register got in for $25—“which we did honor for quite a few more individuals,” Serota says—and continued to a $50.25 fee through Feb. 25 with $60.25 for day-of registration. A portion of proceeds will benefit Chicago-headquartered Prevent Child Abuse America.

As of mid-January, 1,000 runners signed up for the April 5 quarter marathon, which starts and ends at Soldier Field with a 6.55 out-and-back course along the corridor of Lake Shore Drive.

“Honestly, I don’t do a lot of races in the city so I’m looking forward to it,” Gittelman says.

NAUTICAL MILEAGEIn the heat of summer race season, the Fort2Base run on Aug. 24 offers two course options: a three nautical mile or 10 nautical mile route, which run between Naval Station Great Lakes and through Fort Sheridan on Chicago’s north shore.

Despite the terminology, racers won’t be getting wet, aside from some per-spiration. As a way to celebrate Chicago’s historic and contemporary military command and training centers, this completely on-land course uses nautical miles for its measurements. “The nautical mile is a unit of length that is about one minute of arc of latitude measured along any meridian, or about one minute of arc of longitude at the equator,” the race website says. “By international agreement, it is 1,852 meters (approximately 6,076 feet).” In other words, three nautical miles equals 3.45 land miles while 10 nautical miles translates 11.5 land miles. “We easily could have made it a half marathon,” Beth Salinger, Fort2Base race or-ganizer, says, “but there are already so many in the city and region that I thought it would be cool to do something different.” Plus, runners who have never participated in a nautical mile race automatically earn PRs for the new distance, Salinger adds. Many participants use the nautical mileage race as training for the Chicago Marathon (Oct. 12) or Ironman Wisconsin (Madison, Sept. 7), Salinger says.

“It’s also a great idea for those individuals and families tied to the military,” she says. “Last year we had about 30 percent participants who were military personnel.”

Jay Wight, the USA Track & Field road course certifier for the state of Illinois, has measured over 500 races and certified nearly 2,500 courses since 1988. He believes the concept of providing out-of-the-box distances is more a marketing tool than anything, but that those quirky numbers still need to be accurate.

“This isn’t about setting records,” he explains. “It’s about having courses where all the right points from start to finish are the right distance from one another. The runners have an expectation it’s going to be properly measured.”

While finishing a marathon will continue to romance beginners and speedsters will chip away at 5K personal bests, there seems to be plenty of room for events of all distances and measurements on the race calendar.

Aon Step up For Kids Benefiting Lurie Children’s Hospitalchicago | January 26As Chicagoans endured one of the coldest winters in recent history, some athletes stayed indoors and participated in one of the area’s marquee stair climb events. Participants climbed the 80 floors of the Aon Center and while Illinois climbers took the top spot on both the men’s and women’s side, top ten finishers came from around the country for one of the most popular stair climbs in the United States.

F^3 Lake Half Marathonchicago, January 25Runners braved extreme weather and windy con-ditions for this year’s F^3 Lake Half Marathon. The cold seemed to do little to slow the top runners. The top three men were separated by only 20 sec-onds, but Melissa Stone Cooney dominated the women’s field with a winning time two and a half minutes faster than second place.

Frozen Zucchini 5K Snowshoe RaceBarrington | January 26For the last two years, the Frozen Zucchini 5K Snowshoe Race has had to convert to a trail race because of the lack of snow, but this time it returned to its snowshoe roots. The extra difficulty separated the top runners and Brad Zoller dominated the men’s race beating the next runner by more than two minutes.

Frozen Gnome 50K/10K Trail RacesCrystal lake, January 11One of the most difficult races of the year, Frozen Gnome runners have to battle a trifecta of issues to compete. The 50K winners overcame not only the difficult distance but had to do so in poor

weather conditions and over a tough trail course. In spite of, or possibly because of, the difficulty level, the race saw their top ten finishers cover nearly four decades in age range.

Sports and Ortho Physical Therapy was established in 2003 to provide clients with an alternative to the busy, corporate type clinic. Physical Therapist owned and operated, Sports and Ortho wanted to bring the hands-on, personalized treatment back to the world of Physical Therapy. Since then we have grown to 6 out-patient clinics specializing in the evaluation and treatment of sports specific problems and injuries. Our therapists are highly trained as movement specialists and provide each client with a comprehensive evaluation to find and treat the source of the problem, not just the symptoms. Our philosophy is based in Manual Therapy giving each client our handson treatments not just hooking them up to machines. Our exercises are based on function, not on exercises that mean nothing to the specific client or sport. If you are tired with the overloaded clinics and therapists that don’t seem to have the time to devote to your care, try us, you will become a fan much like thousands of our former clients.

at the very last race, since points won there are worth double and these athletes are incredibly competitive all year long. Elite races are run in a circuit format so spectators see the athletes mul-tiple times during each discipline.

Age-group athletes get a true ITU racing experi-ence themselves. In Chicago, our tagline is: “Be a Pro for a Day.” Age-group athletes will experience a rather unusual bike and run course for an incred-ibly unique race-day experience, with their family and friends watching them come by several times. The finish line for the age-groupers is exactly the same as what the elite athletes will cross. We know it’s special for athletes to cross the signature ITU blue carpet toward the finish where a well-deserved medal and great post-race finish area await them. The event is free to watch, and the expo is open to athletes and the general public. At the end of the event, we hope to have inspired at least one per-son to give triathlon a “tri” who might have never thought about this sport before.

Q What will people want to watch for at ITU World Triathlon Chicago?A This is the same style of racing contested in the Olympic Games, so it’s a great opportunity for triathletes and sports fans to watch some of the best athletes in the world compete. Some of these athletes will have won medals in London in 2012, and some may win medals at the next Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. In the age-group races, we expect there will be participants of all ages, from 16 or 17 all the way to 80-plus. Plus, there will be an elite paratriathlon event as part of the weekend of racing, which will give spectators a chance to watch these inspirational athletes com-pete as they look ahead to paratriathlon’s debut at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Q Why did the ITU choose to come to Chicago?A We have worked with the Chicago Sports Commission over the past two years on a success-ful bid to bring this event to Chicago. Even more exciting – Chicago was awarded the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final and Age Group World Championships and will welcome the world’s very best in September 2015.

Chicago as a sports city is a great fit for the ITU World Triathlon Series. The city is very cosmo-politan and fits well into the line-up of host cities featured within the series. It is host to a number of well-known sports teams, stages large interna-tional events such as the Bank of America Chi-cago Marathon — big sports events are part of the culture. We feel that the city and its people will welcome and embrace the triathlon as they have many other sports events. People here are so friendly and welcoming that we know our out-of-town and out-of-country athletes will feel right at home in Chicago.

Q Can you explain your role with the Interna-tional Triathlon Union’s World Triathlon series event in Chicago?A As the event director for ITU World Triathlon Chi-cago, I oversee the entire project and planning process and serve as the key contact for the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District in the event permitting process. There are many different groups working on this event from the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, to the International Triathlon Union (the sport’s international governing body), USA Triathlon (national governing body), Chicago Sports Commis-sion and our staff – all of whom are handling different areas of the event. My job is to connect the relevant con-tacts/groups with each other, to ensure all these groups are up-to-date in the planning process, and to be the boots on the ground here in Chicago.

Q how did you become interested in the world of triathlons?A My career began in endurance sports, specifically in cycling, in 2005 in a German sports event agen-cy. The agency organized what now is known as the ITU World Triathlon Hamburg. It was all hands on deck during event week so every year I had a specific

job assigned to me for the triathlon event. In 2007, Hamburg hosted the BG Triathlon World Champi-onships (now known as the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final and Age Group World Cham-pionships), which was a big deal for the agency and for the city. It was a tremendous experience to see the elite athletes as well as age-group athletes from all over the world coming to Hamburg to race for world titles. That’s when I got drawn into triathlon, and from there I was offered the opportunity to be involved in the ITU World Triathlon series event in Washington, D.C., in 2009.

Q Tell me a little more about what we can ex-pect from ITU World Triathlon Chicago -- what’s the premise of the event? What makes it differ-ent from other local triathlon events?A The event is part of an eight-race series that spans the globe with Chicago being the only stop in the Americas. For elites, the series is the pinnacle of the sport. The athletes collect points at each race throughout the season, and at the final race of the series, the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, the elite athletes with the most points win the World Championship titles. The title is usually decided
