The Rice And Chessboard Story
There's a famous legend about the origin of chess that goes like this. When the inventor of the game showed it to the emperor of India, the emperor was so impressed by the new game, that he said to the man
"Name your reward!"The man responded,"Oh emperor, my wishes are simple. I only wish for
this. Give me one grain of rice for the first square of the chessboard, two grains for the next square, four for the next, eight for the next and so on for all 64 squares, with each square having double the number of grains as the square before.“
A question
1kg of rice is sufficient for such a reward?
Make your guess!
Quanti sono i chicchi di riso?
1 2 4 8 16 …
How many grains are there?
1 2 4 8 16 …

Conclusioni
Conclusions
The total amount of the grains of rice is twice the number of grains on the last square minus 1
2^63 = 9 223 372 036 854 775 808So, the sum of grains of rice on the chessboard
is:2^64 – 1 = 18 446 744 073 709 551 615(nearly 18,5 billion of billion of grains).
Math lessons go on to study in depth:
• calculus with powers• Scientific Notation• appoximation• Exponential growth: A sheet about 0.2 mm thick, i.e. 0.0002 m, is
doubled many times…How many times should it be doubled to become taller than the math teacher?
Quanto pesa il riso?
• E’ possibile pesare 1 chicco?• Quanti ne pesiamo?• Con quale bilancia?• Gli errori commessi?
Scheda di lavoro
What is the weight of the rice?
• Is it possible to weight only one grain of rice?
• How many grains shall we weight?• What kind of scale ?• How do we evaluate the errors?
Worksheet
Infine…
Then…
How long should it be a train in order to carry on the total amount of rice, supposing that each carriage is 24 m long and it carries at maximum 25000 kg?
Compare your result with • Distance between Rome and Milan• Distance between Rome and Mexico City• The Radius of the Earth

Physics lessons go on doing experimental activities in order to focus on:
• measures and errors• Scientific Notation• approximation• order of magnitude
