Bigger issue than people realize
3,533 unintentional drownings annually from 2005-2009
Fifth leading cause of unintentional injury death
Priority Population (Age)
Drowning affects everyone!
Roughly 1 in 5 drowning victims are under the age of 14
In 2010, drowning was the leading cause of injury death of children ages 1-4
Second leading cause of injury death for child 5-9
Priority Population (Race)
Minorities, especially African Americans, are much more likely to drown that Caucasians
African American children are 3 times more likely than Caucasian children
70% of African American and 62% of Hispanic children do not know how to swim
High Risk LocationsPools and Spas account for the majority of drowning’s and near drowning’s for children ages 1-4
