WHAT ARE RIGHTS?Everyone has rights no matter who they are, where they come from or what they believe.
Rights are things that every person needs to survive and develop to their full potential
like the right to freedom of expression, protection, culture and play, education and health
care.
Childrens rights are protected by an agreement between almost every country in the
world to uphold and realise childrens rights. This agreement is called the Convention on
the Rights of the Child (CRC).
OF THE CHILD?
Children and young people under the age of 18 need the protection of the Convention
because they need unique care and protection. Children are often more vulnerable and
their opinions are too often overlooked.
The Convention protects every childs right to:
a childhood and to be protection from harm
be educated, which includes all girls and boys completing primary school
be healthy through having access to clean water, nutritious food and medical care be treated fairly, which includes changing laws and practices that are unfair on
children
be heard and have their views considered in matters that affect them
WHY DO CHILDREN NEED THE CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REALISING CHILDRENS RIGHTS?
Everybody! Because everybody has rights this means that everybody, including children
have the responsibility to respect and realise these rights for others.
Governments in particular have the responsibility to make these rights available to
everyone, and making sure that all parents and children know and understand childrens
rights as set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
