A new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshop and e-Learning programme - Working with ADHD and the Autism Spectrum - is now available for SCMA members.

SCMA have stated that this opportunity will help childminders identify the key characteristics of ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The programme explores the concept and key symptoms of ADHD and ASD; encouraging childminders to think about appropriate behaviour responses within a professional childminding setting.

Members can now book a place onto upcoming Working with ADHD and the Autism Spectrum workshops or our e-Learning programme.

Childminders across the authority have embraced the new National document Building the Ambition. Twilight training

sessions have taken place in most local areas and many childminders attended and enjoyed the sessions. For more information contact Linda Morrison [email protected]

At evening when I go to bedI see the stars shine overhead; They are the little daisies whiteThat dot the meadow of the Night. And often while I'm dreaming so,Across the sky the Moon will go;It is a lady, sweet and fair,Who comes to gather daisies there. For, when at morning I arise,There's not a star left in the skies; She's picked them all and dropped them downInto the meadows of the town.

STRAWBERRY SLUSHIE

MethodGive this super simple and really delicious slushie a try - without all the added sugar and junk of a shop-bought fi zzy drink, it's a treat without all the nasties.

1. Pick the top leafy bits off the strawberries.2. Pick the mint leaves, discarding the stalk.3. Add the strawberries and mint leaves to a liquidiser along with 100g of ice cubes.4. On a chopping board, cut the lemon in half.5. Squeeze half the juice into the liquidiser, using your fi ngers to catch any pips.6. Add enough cold water to just cover the strawberries (roughly 350ml), pop the lid on and whiz until smooth.7. Fill a large jug halfway up with ice cubes.8. Taste the slushie and sweeten with a little sugar, if needed.9. Pour into the jug and stir with a wooden spoon.

WATER BOTTLE WIND SPIRALS

You will need

Several plastic water bottles, permanent markers in various colours and scissors.

1. Remove the lids and labels from your bottles and give them a quick wash. Make sure bottles are thoroughly dry on the outside. 2. Once the bottles are dry, your little ones can colour them! Permanent markers are a must for this step. Washable ink will not adhere to the plastic. We used a variety of colours on each bottle. We made vertical stripes on some and horizontal stripes on others, make sure your bottle is covered in colour from top to bottom. 3. With your scissors, remove the fl at bottom of the bottle and discard (or save for a future craft project!). Starting at the cut edge, snip around and around, from the bottom of the bottle to the top, to create a spiral. Stop cutting when you get to the smooth, rounded “shoulders” of the bottle. 4. When all of your spirals have been cut, head out to the yard and fi nd a slender tree branch to hang them from. Slide the neck of the bottles onto the branch and nest the bottle tops together by tucking each one into the one before it.5. Stand back, and watch your colourful wind spirals bounce and dance in the breeze.

Kathleen and the Early Years team would like to wish you all a very happy, relaxing holiday!
