Using wonderfully detailed illustrations of the changing landscape of the town in combination with excerpts from the newspaper, author Bob Kerr takes the reader through a brief history of New Zealand, from the first settlers up to the present day.

At the end of the book, we find Matt saving the newspaper by appointing himself editor, putting it online and running it from his laptop. Here the reader can actually go online to a website related to the book to learn more about New Zealand history, and access our national online encyclopedia, Te Ara.

THE WAR IN TARANAKI

The settlement of Taranaki

is in a state of alarm in

anticipation of a war

between the Natives and the

Government. Wiremu Kingi,

a native chief of Waitara, a

river ten miles north of New

Plymouth, disputes the sale

of land. Women have been

sent to take down the tents

of the surveyors, fold them

up, carry them off the land

and remove the surveyor’s

instruments and chains.

Martial law has been

proclaimed and the militia

called out. More troops are

expected by the steamer

from Auckland and all the

out-settlers are moving into

town.

 GOLD COMPANY RULES

Parties setting out for the goldfields should provide themselves with a spade, a tin dish, a tent, material for making a cradle and a week or two’s provisions. Many of those who have proceeded to the diggings have wisely formed themselves into companies. The following is an example of company rules: 1st. There shall be a foreman to conduct the works and a secretary to keep accounts. 2nd. All gold obtained during the week should be divided equally amongst the shareholders and should be weighed every day and entered into a book by the secretary. The gold to be divided every Saturday afternoon. 3rd. Any person proved incapable of work through the effects of intoxicating liquors will be fined £1 per day. Any person being absent except on the company’s business must provide a man in his place or be fined £2 per day.
