Following the Alliance Française Smart Steps to French curriculum, classes develop children’s language skills through structured themed activities with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Classes for TeenagersOur task-based curriculum advances teens’ oral and written communication skills at targeted levels of proficiency using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Teens with advanced or native proficiency study French language and culture through literature, role play, essays, current events magazines, and conversation. An online written placement test is required to determine each student’s level.

Levels for TeenagersOur Alliance Française Curriculum for teens is taught in immersion by native speakers using textbooks that follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This framework provides a global scale for oral and written language skills and is used by universities and employers to assess language proficiency at different levels, as follows:

A1 - Beginner• Can introduce oneself, understand familiar

everyday expressions and basic phrases, ask questions about personal details

A2 - Advanced Beginner• Can understand and use expressions and

sentences of immediate relevance (e.g. basic personal information, shopping, directions…)

• Can communicate through simple and direct exchange of information about routine tasks

B1 - Intermediate• Can understand the main points of clear,

standard French on familiar matters encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

• Can deal with most situations while traveling• Can produce simple connected texts on

topics which are of personal interest• Can describe experiences and events,

dreams, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans

B2 - Advanced

• Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics

• Can speak with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party

• Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue by giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options

PRIVATE LESSONSFor a truly personalized approach to French, we offer one-on-one private lessons for children ages 5+. Our teachers use a variety of media to cater to each child’s specific learning styles while focusing on oral comprehension and speaking as well as reading and writing for older children. Lessons are available in a variety of formats and are tailored to non-native and native speakers based on their proficiency level. cost: $60/hour or $540 for a 10-lesson pass.

Your child may be required to take a placement test. Please contact the Education Department for more details.

PROFICIENCY EXAMS & PREPARATORY WORKSHOPSThe French Cultural Center offers two exams for children and teens: the DELF Prim for ages 8-12 and the DELF Junior for ages 12-16. These exams confer official qualifications of French language proficiency, which are useful for school applications, study abroad programs, immigration purposes and more. Contact the Education Department or visit our website for details.

We also offer private or semi-private preparatory lessons for the DELF and for the AP French exam. See below for information about DELF preparation. Please contact our Education Administrator at 617.912.0415 for more details.

Exam Description Exam Dates

The DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) is an official qualification awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the competency of candidates in the French language. This diploma is valid for life. Visit our website for pricing based on exam levels.

Preparatory workshops for the DELF last three hours amd are $95 for members and $115 for non-members

FIELD TRIPS The Center welcomes teachers and their students to take advantage of our library and participate in some fun and creative educational activities. Scavenger hunts, crafts and cooking workshops (among others) are organized by the Education Department and are taught in full immersion.

NEW! ADVANCED BEGINNER FRENCH CLUB FOR PARENTSWondering what to do while your child/teen is learning French with us and you have to wait for the end of the course? Make use of your time and learn French too! Join us to discover and learn some words, sentences and expressions that will help you to communicate with your kid/teen, in French of course! A cup of coffee or tea will be offered to make this workshop more warm and friendly.
