• BRIEF DESCRIPTION: In this assignment I created a multicultural experience regarding the books I read. I will describe the types of books I read. I will explain why the books I read is multicultural. I will also include why I think the boos are multicultural.

• RATIONALE:

• To document my understanding of InTASC Standard 3, Learner Development, I have selected to include a PowerPoint slides to help explain my rationale of increasing the students understanding of reading various books. The books will show how the authors used different ways to include how cultures interact with each other. The teacher will instruct students to share why they look their book that they read.

The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs!By Jon Sciezka

• Date: 1989

• Genre: Children’s Book

• Unit theme: Fainess

• Book: Mr. Wolf was wrongfully sent to prison for 10 years because of a misunderstanding. Mr. Wolf wish to tell the story from his perspective. He wants to people to judge for themselves who is the bad guy. He wants the public to be the judge. He also wants to prove he is innocent.

• Mr. Wolf actual name is Alexander T. Wolf. The story tells of how Mr. Wolf was framed by The 3 Little Pigs. Mr. Wolf states he had a bad cold and he was only sneezing when the homes fell down. He went to the Pigs homes to borrow a cup of sugar from the pigs and he just happened to sneeze. He insists that the he is the victim in the story.

• Postive/Negative Aspects: The positive aspects of the book would be that it gives the reader a chance to view a story from view of the wolf who was accused of wrongdoing. The negative aspects of the book would be that it appears to be an all male story. I believe the message is for both male and females in being fair to others.

• Activity: Have children read The Three Little Pigs and use the Venn diagram to show how the story is different and the same. Have the children state which version that he or she likes and why. Have the children state whether he or she thinks Mr. Wolf was treated fairly because of the way he looks and acts.

• What makes this book multicultural? This book is multicultural because it shows how some people may be treated unfairly because of the way he or she looks. It can also teach the children that he or she needs to find out for themselves whether they think something is true or not.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett• Publisher: Aladdin Paperbacks

• Date: 1978

• Genre: Picture book, Multicultural

• Unit theme: Summary skills

• Book summary: The books tells a story about a small town who was having wonderful weather until the weather went bad. The weather rains food of all kinds. The only bad thing about raining food is that the people of Chewandswallow do not get the opportunity to choose what they will eat for the day. It may rain pancakes, steak and potatoes, pork chops or spaghetti that day. The people are not aware that a storm is about to happen. The portion of the food gets bigger and unmanageable for the people. They start to fear for their lives. They are forced to come up with a plan and they need one fast. The people come up with one and they save their town of Chewandswallow.

• Positive/Negative Aspects: The book did a good job of including a town of people in the story. The main character were mostly men. The book had an older gentleman told the story of his town. He was not really in charge. The people of the town helped each other.

• Activity: Have children name the main character in the story. The children will then find the setting in the story by locating what town the story takes place. Have the children describe the weather in the story. Have the children write about all of the funny events in the story.

• What makes this book multicultural? : This book is multicultural because it brings together everyone in the town of Chewandswallow. The town consisted of people from various ethnic groups. The town had to work together to solve a major problem and they did by coming together and it did not matter where they came from.

The Knight At Dawnby Mary Pope Osborne

• Date: 1993

• Genre: Fantasy Adventure

• Unit theme: Cultural change over time

• Book summary: The story is about two sibling who find themselves in a different time period. The main characters are Jack and Annie. They have a hard time sleeping so sneak off to a tree house and open a book and take an adventure. This is not first time that this has happened to them. They went on an adventure to the Crustaceous period previous. Annie picks up the book about castles and wishes to see knights and castles. The book takes them there during the time of knights and castles. They are excited about the castles and they decide to take a journey through the castle.

• Positive and Negative Aspects: The book positive aspect was that it had a male and female as the main characters. Another positive aspects detailed a girl having no fear and going out to explore. The book is a quick and simple read. The book did have Annie going out and doing more in the book. The negative aspects of it focused on the older brother being in charge.

• Activity: Have children draw a castle on a piece of paper. Have the children identify the way people spoke during that time period. Have the children identify the environment surrounding the castle.

• What makes this book multicultural? : This book is multicultural because it talks about two siblings taking an adventure to a different time period and how people lived. The book was good at pointing out that girls are just as adventurous as boys. It did a good job of showing that girls are strong and face any challenge.
