Culture

• Chile is a country that is filled with culture that has been influence by Andean traditions, Mapuche activities, Spanish, and European.

• The main language that is spoken in Chile is Spanish by other dialects are also spoken such as Aymara, Quechua, Rapa Nui, and Mapuche.

Music and Dance• Just Like every culture in the

Americas, Chile’s music and dance are influence by other cultures.

• The main National dance is Cueca, a courtship dance between men and women.

• Cueca is danced all year long in Chile, but especially during Chile’s holidays in September.

• There is many variations of this dance in other countries such as in Peru and Bolivia.

• Another Chilean traditional song is called Tonada.

Religion and Beliefs

• The majority of Chileans have been brought up to worship in the Catholic Church. Only 1 out of 10 people would consider themselves part of a different religion.  

• Protestants make up the biggest portion of this minority.

• The Catholic church remains a major influence on the people.

• Some Chileans have influence on indigenous beliefs.

• Popular religious beliefs focus to a large extent on the notion that there is a struggle between good and evil.

Literature• “Chileans call their country país

de poetas-country of poets (Wikipedia)”.

• Chileans most famous poets consist of Pablo Neruda, Grabiela Mistral, Isabel Allende, Gonzalos Rojas, among others.

• This poets and novelist have contributed the great literature that is now read all over the world.

• Pablo Neruda is considered one of the most influential poets of the 20th century.

Sports • The most popular sport in Chile is soccer.

• Chile has gone to the FIFA World Cup seven times.

• Children, young adults, and older people play soccer in Chile.

• But Chile’s most successful sport is tennis, winning two gold metals in this sport.

• The Chilean version of Rodeo is very popular in more rural areas.

• Chile has great foods• Traditional recipes include Asado, Cazuela,

Empanadas, Humitas, and Curanto.

• Close proximity to the Sea, seafood plays a major role in the food of Chile.

• The most prized dishes in the country is Curanto, which is a rich stew combined with different types of seafood, potatoes, lamb, chicken, beef, and pork. 

• European influences have carried over into Chile. Also Middle Eastern and Asian influences in different parts of the country.

Wine• Chile is the fifth largest exporter of

wine in the world. • Chile’s climate is a huge factor on

the cultivation of grapes. • The grapes were originally brought

by the Spanish to Santiago, Chile.• Chile’s success in vineyards have

lured in many French to set up wineries in Chile.

• Maipo is known for reds like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere; Casablanca Valley, a region producing delicious Sauvignon Blanc, as well as other whites & some reds; Colchaugua, an inland district creating amazing red wines from Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, A couple of smaller regions include Limari and Elqui, which produce cool-climate Chardonnay.

Easter Island

• Easter Island is located below the southern tip of Chile.• There are stone statues call “moai” which is made of volcanic rock.• The stone faces represented deceased ancestors, former chiefs and important lineage

status symbols.
