What is “THERAPEUTIC ICE”?
Therapeutic Ice, called Cryotherapy byprofessional therapists and healthcareexperts, has many benefits.
The Benefits of Therapeutic Ice.
Pain relief is the most common reason to useTherapeutic Ice. Within minutes of usingice, sore and painful areas become “ numb ”,
reducing the sensation of pain!
Temporary pain relief is good, but usingTherapeutic Ice can have an important effecton your nerves as well. Proper use of Therapeutic Ice can help to “calm down”nerves, which eases Nerve Irritation.

Another benefit of Therapeutic Ice isreducing Inflammation . When an area isinjured, the body often responds by causingan “Inflammatory Response.” Usually, thearea is swollen and maybe sore and / ordiscolored.
These injuries are notoriously painful , andoften cause swelling and bruising . Even if there is not a broken bone or torn ligaments,an injured ankle often causes a person towalk with a “ limp ” for a couple of days. These symptoms are related to“Inflammation ”. 1
“Have you ever twistedor ‘rolled’ your ankle?”
Then you know whatinflammation feels like.

Some of the most celebrated“breakthroughs ” in modern medicine are inthe field of Anti-Inflammatory medications.Unfortunately, some of these medicationshave been shown to damage the liver orkidneys, along with a list of other dangerousside effects.
Therapeutic Ice has anti-inflammatorybenefits without the DANGEROUS sideeffects.
As a sports fan, I love watching a baseballpitcher make a ball “dance” as he throws itpast the other teams best batter. Some of thebest pitchers can throw a baseball over 100miles per hour!
Many medicationsdamage the liver or kidneys.
Therapeutic Ice has the benefits of chasing away inflammation
without the dangerous side-effects of powerful prescriptions!

Have you ever seen one of theseprofessional athletes after a game? Theyoften have a large ice pack taped to theirpitching shoulder and arm.
All professional sports teams useTherapeutic Ice to help their players. Eventeams with millions of dollars in theirbudget and armies of Athletic Trainers andMedical Doctors use Therapeutic Ice to calmdown painful areas and relieve injuries.
I heard a baseball coachtell the pitcher,
“Put a $20 icepack onthat million-dollar arm.”

What is Therapeutic Ice?
In an emergency, a plastic bag filled with icecubes will suffice, but I suggest purchasing aprofessional-quality Therapeutic Ice Pack.Available in various sizes, they are usuallyplastic and have a gel/liquid inside. Makesure it is non-toxic. These ice packs oftenlook like plastic bags sealed on all sides. The best models have double seals, or a bag-inside-a-bag.
After being in a freezer, the gel/liquid trapsand holds the cold temperature longer thanregular ice and water. The “gel” inside theicepack will remain cold for up to twohours! Unlike water, the gel does notbecome hard or solidify, so the pack is ableto bend to comfortably match the shape of your body.

For best results,
use therapeutic ice 20 minutes, remove it for 20 minutes, and then reapply to the same area
another 20 minutes.
The Moral of the Story is…
John* substituted a bag of frozen peas for aprofessional Therapeutic Icepack. It workedto ease his pain, but he soon learned avaluable lesson.
One patient tried a“substitute icepack:’
You will not believe thelesson he learned , or who
taught it to him.

Everything was great until after the thirdtime he used it, when he forgot to return it tothe freezer.
Later that night, his two cats had a blastwhen they tore open the bag. Smelling
food, the cats attacked the plastic bag. Thegood news is that the cats only ate two orthree of the peas. Obviously they werepicky-eaters.
The other thousand peas became toys! The
green balls were cold and soggy, yet theymust have been fun to play with. The catsmanaged to hide 1,000 green peasthroughout the house!
When John went into the living room thenext morning, there were defrosted peasscattered everywhere. What a mess, and thecleanup was never-ending! For severalweeks, the owner would find a lone peahiding under the bed, inside his shoe, andmany other places.

How to Ice Right.
No matter what type of icepack you use,NEVER place it directly against the skin.Always wrap an icepack with a towel orpad, keeping several layers of cloth betweenthe icepack and your skin.
Place the wrapped icepack onto an area, keep it there for 20 minutes, and thenremove it. Never leave it in the same areafor longer than twenty minutes at a time.
You can get the benefits of Therapeutic Iceseveral times each day.
A creative patient loved to watch aone-hour game show on TV.
She would apply an icepack at thestart of the show, remove it duringthe middle, and reapply it for the
final 20 minutes.
She benefits from two ice-sessionswhile watching TV.

NervesThe Body’s Communication System.
When was the last time you hit your “funnybone?” Remember feeling tingling orelectricity running down the forearm intoyour hand? Did you know that the funny
bone is not a bone at all; it is a nerve!Nerves that travel to your fingertips are wellprotected as they exit your neck and upperback. There is not as much padding in thearm, and the nerves are closer to the surfaceas they cross the elbow joint.
Bumping your elbow can irritate the nerve, causing pain and weird sensations. Thatweird feeling that shoots into the hand isfollowing the nerve as it goes down theforearm and into your hand.

Even though most people say it is a funnybone, now you can explain that it shouldreally be called a “Funny Nerve”. This is aperfect example of how pressure in one area, bumping your elbow, causes symptoms toshow up someone else along the path of theNerve.
Just like traffic on a busy street, nerves carryimportant information in both directions toconnect your brain and your body. Let’slook at this interesting phenomenon closer.
Nerves carry vital information from the
brain out to each part of your body. Forexample, your brain tells your leg muscles towork harder because it suddenly starts torain while you look for your car in theparking lot.
Nerves also send messages from the body tothe brain, carrying information needed tomake decisions and take action (i.e., pullingaway from the heat of a fire, grabbing thebottom of your foot after stepping on anunseen toy or rock.)

Your body has billions of nerves andconnections where the nerves communicatewith each other. 2
A lot of people suffer from symptoms intheir arms, hands, legs or feet due topressure on a nerve. Remember, pain andsymptoms in one area can be caused by
pressure or problems in another area.
Nerves, arteries, and veins in your neck andupper back travel through your shoulder, down your arm, and continue to your hand.Additionally, nerves and blood supply that
start in your low back travel through yourlegs and reach your toes.
Where should I stick it?(Be careful whom you ask!)
The short answer is use therapeuticice anywhere you have pain!
It is also helpful to use ice on areaswith lots of nerves to reduce nerve
interference and irritation.

An area with lots of Nerves, called a NervePlexus, can be sensitive to stress or injury, and usually responds well to TherapeuticIce. The neck, upper back, shoulders, andlow back all have high concentrations of Nerves, and are common places to applyTherapeutic Ice.
Many people have a tendency to “carrystress with them” causing the muscles intheir neck and upper back to become tightand sore. A Therapeutic Icepack is perfectto drape around the neck like a scarf.Another option is to hang the icepack over
the top of one shoulder, and cover themuscles connecting the neck to the shoulderblade, or scapula.
You can get the benefits of Therapeutic Iceseveral times each day.
For more results, use therapeutic ice 20minutes, remove it for 20 minutes, and thenreapply to the same area another 20 minutes.
