CHILLIN’ WITH MAX

Tim Fisher

Duration: 2’50” Level: 2

Program Notes:

Who is Max? No-one knows for sure what he really looks like under his felt hat and dark

glasses. What they do know is that he comes to the same table by the window at the

same time every Friday night. And his order is always the same – dry water, straight up,

on the rocks. Come and enter into the sophisticated, yet mysterious, world of Max. Are

you cool enough to chill with Max?

Rehearsal Notes:

As the title suggests, this is a laid back, relaxed piece. It should have a light and bouncy

feel throughout and should never feel rushed.

One of the keys to making this piece swing is articulation. Notice the articulation on the

quaver pairs in the first few bars. This should be played as “do-dot”. Lifting off the short,

second quaver gives the phrase forward momentum.

For percussion, it is preferable to have one student play the drum kit part only, however

split drum kit “A” & “B” parts have been provided, if required. If you have lots of

percussionists, double the mallet parts first, rather than any of the drum kit parts.

[37] through to [53] is a stop time section. Here, tutti chord “hits” from the band are

interspersed with short solo/soli figures from different sections of the band. By the end of

this section, everyone should have had a solo. You may wish to give students the

opportunity to make up their own simple “solo” in this section. The percussionists get the

opportunity to play with lots of “toys” through this section. Don’t worry if you don’t have

access to the specific “toys” listed in the score, just use what you have available.

About the Composer:

Tim is an established writer for both Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. He is passionate

about writing fresh and interesting original works for junior level ensembles. His Concert

Band works have featured on festival lists around Australia, receiving international

recognition at The Midwest Clinic – An International Band and Orchestra Conference in

Chicago. His solo works also feature on the AMEB syllabus.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Education (Melbourne), a Masters degree in Jazz Composition

and Arranging (ANU), and a Masters Certificate in Composition for Film & TV

(Berklee).

In addition to his work as a composer, Tim has been a brass teacher and ensemble

director at both primary and secondary school levels for nearly 20 years. He is also in

demand as a clinician and adjudicator.

He currently lives in Melbourne with his wife and three young children.
