Meet Karena

Karena is heading up the team that will support MOT stations, garages and dealerships by providing Authorised Examiner Consultants to ensure they are compliant with Government legislation and guidelines.

But alongside that role, she is the Director of Administration for the whole of Chiltern Development Training Ltd. She’s the undeniable company authority and expert on all MOT training matters. And Karena handles all aspects of MOT training from organising courses and annual CPD to site compliance visits.

As a qualified MOT Manager, she can support you by calling upon her previous experience of setting up and helping to run an MOT station.

Meet Russell

Russell is Head of Training and Development for Chiltern Development Training Ltd. And, at the moment, enjoying his new role as a trainee Authorised Examiner Consultant!

He’s been involved in training since 1994. And, as a qualified MOT Manager, can draw on his experience of both classroom and one to one coaching to support your business.

Over the last 25 years, Russell has also been actively involved with NVQ’s, Apprenticeships and many driver improvement related courses.

DVSA has introduced a new consultant role in the MOT testing service. You can assign the authorised examiner consultant (AEC) role in the MOT testing service to consultants you use to provide advice on MOT standards and how to run your centre. Do this on the AE details page. This lets the consultant view:

• test quality information

• test logs

• tester annual assessment certificates

• site review outcomes

They cannot carry out any other actions, such as buying slots, starting tests or assign roles.

Case Study

My business partner and I had taken over an MOT station and needed to take the IMI Level 3 MOT Manager course so that one of us could take on the role of AEDM. After contacting several training centres we went with Chiltern Development Training Ltd as they seemed the friendliest and best organised. The course was great, and we received excellent support and tuition from Russell and Karena.

Because we were relatively new to the MOT admin role it became obvious during the course that we needed more than the qualification. On discussion with Karena and Russell, they pointed out that they offered a service where, for a small fee, they would visit our MOT station and effectively do a compliance check to ensure that everything was in order. This to us was a ‘no brainer’ so shortly after our course, Karena visited our station. She conducted an extensive compliance check and gave us a ‘to do’ list to bring us up to standard.

Coinciding with Karena’s visit, DVSA introduced the new AEC role where you can appoint an independent person to access and analyse your test logs and test quality information reports etc. At the end of her visit we discussed the new role and its implications to the MOT business and agreed that it could only be good for both maintaining standards and making the role of AEDM easier. Karena had already put together an AEC role package and after a brief discussion of cost we were signed up.

To have someone overseeing the operation of our MOT site, believe you me, is reassuring and a massive weight off our shoulders. We can now just get on with doing the stuff we are good at without having to constantly worry about paperwork and reports.

So, now every month Karena logs into our system and prints off our Test Log and Test Quality information reports. She then analyses these, highlights areas that outside the national norm and sends them back in a neat and tidy order. All we have to do is take a look at the areas of concern and follow them up. Easy for us to cope with.

It’s great to know that we have the support of the team from Chiltern MOT and I’m sure that DVSA welcomes 3rd party involvement. One less thing to worry about and all for a cost of less than two MOT’s a month.
