Independence Day & CHIMERA Priyanka Parab, S.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)

Our college celebrated the India’s 70th

Independence Day along with the Don Bosco Farm High

School, Sulcorna. Our Asst. Professor of Horticulture, Ma’am Glenda Carvalho, was the chief

guest for the occasion. She unfurled the National Flag and then all of us sang the National

Anthem as a tribute and respect for our country and freedom fighters who had sacrificed their

lives to give us the independence that we celebrate on this auspicious day.

After that all of us moved to the Humberto Mascarenhas hall for continuing the program

wherein the students from both F.Y. and S.Y. B.Sc.(Agri) sang a patriotic song ‘Maa tuze salam’

and six girls from S.Y. performed a dance. On this day, we completed one year of editing our

weekly magazine CHIMERA. A special edition of the CHIMERA was released on the occasion

at the hands of the school Headmaster, Fr. Manuel Vaz sdb. It was handwritten on handmade

paper with artistic work, all done entirely by the students. It contained one year’s experience and

journey of the students now in their second year at the college and a month spent by the new

F.Y. students. There were many dances and songs performed by the students of DBFH school.

Fresher’s Party Blast 2016 Vandit R. Naik, F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)

On Saturday, 20th

August, 2016. our seniors held a ‘Fresher’s Party’ for the new students of

DBCA-Sulcorna. As informed earlier, we gathered near the A.V. hall in the Men’s Hostel block.

Our dress code for the day was white clothes. There was a complete suspense as the A.V. hall

door was latched from inside. The only thing which we could hear was the mild music. We were

nervous as we had heard the rumors about ragging. However, when we saw Miguel Braganza Sir

coming to the hall, we were relieved. Things cannot go wrong when he is around. At exactly

1:30 pm the door was opened. They welcomed us by giving us broach with a smiley on it to

make us happy.

The party began with a short prayer was conducted by our classmate, Brother Joswin D’Souza.

Anchors for the day were Andrea Cheradil and Veena Gaonkar from S.Y. B.Sc.(Agri). We did

not know that the chairs on which we were sitting were numbered. Our first surprise was the

‘dare’ which they told us after calling out random numbers. Karishma Parsekar, Liza Pinheiro,

Albert Johnson, Asilda Vaz and Saiesh Shetye were the ones who fell prey to do dares. They

were fun. Those who did not like the dare, had to sit on a balloon and burst it.

Then we played a few games. Mahendra Kadam and Diocesan Brother Ryan Mascarenhas were

winners of breaking balloons game in which one had to protect the balloons tied to each ankle

while stamping to burst the balloon of others. The Laurel and Hardy pair of Saiesh Shetye and

Brijesh Fal Desai were the odd couple winning the balloon dance on a paper tile game. Mrunal

was the winner of the musical chair in which all the students from our class participated.

All the games made us thirsty and hungry. We were given refreshment and, when we were

comfortable, our seniors performed the stable dance for us. It was outstanding! The real fun was

when the ‘Freshers Day’ was coming to an end. It was the time when everyone had to come up

and dance. Even Miguel sir joined us in the dancing. Everyone participated enthusiastically in

the ‘Penguin Dance’, all were clicking selfies or group photos and having lots of fun. It was a

memorable evening for everyone.

Fresher’s party: S.Y. students in Black, F.Y. in White Selfies at the Kushawati River…

A Trek That Lost The Track Liza Pinheiro, F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)

It was a fine drizzling Sunday morning!!! On 21st of August, once again the DBCA organized a

small trek to the beautiful and elegant Kushawati River. Our trekkers included students from

F.Y. and S.Y., Miguel Braganza Sir, his former colleague Mrs. Rena Fernandes, her son Eric and

Gauri Naik. Oh yes, we cannot forget our best three friends; Ben, Brice and Patch, the dogs on

the campus who joined us. The trek began from our college. On our journey we were introduced

to creepy-crawlies, rocks, Gabbian dams constructed with basalt rocks and wire mesh,

astonishing shrubs and trees and some snakes, too.

After crossing small streams and hills we finally reached our destination; the source of River

Kushavati. Can there be waters without the temptation to get yourself in? Impossible! Everyone

got into the river: splashing and dipping. Not only that, the boys dived into the water from the

branch which was about 5-6 feet above the water. Then the temptation arose for the girls too.

Gauri initiated the dive and showed that girls can do what the boys do. She was followed by

Dyinral Correia, Andrea Cheradil and myself. Truly, it was a thrilling experience. With wet

clothes and hungry tummies we headed back to our college but from the wrong track via Kajur.

A two hour long foot hike back to our college. Even the departure was memorable due to

accompaniment of Rena and Eric.

Festival of plants and flowers… Priyanka Parab, S.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)

A few students from DBCA-Sulcorna volunteered to attend the Silver Jubilee Festival of Plants

& Flowers at SFX school complex, Siolim- Goa, which was held on 27th

-29 th

August, 2016.

There we got the opportunity to witness most of the medicinal, fruit, spice, ornamental and

flowering plants available in Goa. All of us helped them to arrange the plants displays. There we

saw the insectivorous Pitcher plant for the first time. We even saw the creativity of various High

school and Higher Secondary students in their projects on pulses and their importance in our day

to day life.

In the afternoon, we were fortunate to have an interesting and interactive caricature session with

Alex Fernandes, popularly known as Alexyz, who is the co-founder of this unique festival. He

gave us the invitation for a cup of tea at his house which was nearby but, while going through his

artistic work in his house, we requested him to portrait each one of us. To our surprise, he readily

sketched all ten of us and Miguel sir with keen interest. He even encouraged us to sketch each

other’s cartoons. Goaded by Alexyz, we even tried caricatures of Miguel Sir. The session was

memorable and interesting. We enjoyed it a lot.

At the festival of plants and flowers AND an amazing session of cartooning with Alexyz

Workshop on Body Language Ryan Mascarenhas F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)

Kanan Tandi and participants in the workshop on body language at Dempo House, Panaji

Learning outside the classroom is fun, outside the college campus learning is also fun and

travelling a distance of about 65 km to learn something different and interesting is extra fun. Few

of the DBCA-Sulcorna students got a very good exposure at Dempo House Panjim on Sunday,

28th

August; under the guardianship of our Miguel Braganza Sir. As Miss. Kanan Tandi an

expert in body language conducted workshop on body language organized by Planet J of

‘Navhind Times’ newspaper. Nine students of DBCA-Sulcorna attended this workshop

altogether there were about 100 others who came to participate in it from different walks of life,

most of the students in the age group 16 to 23 years and a few adults.

The concepts that were discussed there were ‘how to be memorable,’ ‘public speaking’, ‘social

and emotional learning’ and understanding body language, specially understanding facial

expressions and different types of handshakes. It enriched me and of course all those who

witness the same, with something important that will be useful while dealing with other

individuals in our day to day life.

Teachers’ Day celebrations Shivama Oppari, S.Y. B.Sc.(Agri)

We celebrated Teacher’s Day on 01 September as 05 September was during Ganesh Chaturthi

holidays. The students of S.Y. B.Sc. (Agri) teamed up with the students of F.Y. B.Sc.(Agri) to

organize the programme with lots of hard work because of our love for our teachers and other

staff members who look after us the year round.

We welcomed the teachers and the non-teaching staff with the roses. Like all good things we

began with a prayer service. Brother Joswin D’Souza, a student of F. Y. B.Sc. (Agri), led us in

prayer. We had different games and dares for the teachers where in all of them participated

whole-heartedly. Krutika Gaonkar did a monologue of a student while the teachers enjoyed their

refreshments. Later Puja sang a beautiful song and Sergio sang a song while Albert Johnson

accompanied him on the guitar. Many students did the mimicry of the teachers and everyone

had a hearty laugh when Shubhangini Ma’am said that we were imitating Ashika Ma’am when

actually everyone else guessed that Shubhangini Ma’am was being imitated!! We were very

fortunate to have a performance by Ma’am Pratiksha, who did the mimicry of Mandar Gawas, a

student of S.Y. B.Sc. (Agri). Sandesh Naik Desai Sir shared his feelings with us and Ma’am

Sumati told us the importance of teachers day. Later Miguel Braganza sir informed us that Dr.

Cassie Rodrigues has stepped down from the charge of ‘Officiating” Principal and that Satish

Patil Sir will don that mantle from today. He took the opportunity to thank Cassie Ma’am for the

dedication and hard work she put in during the first year of the college. He also praised and

thanked the students for organizing the Teachers’ Day program. At the end of the programme

Master Nitin Gaonkar, the Sports Secretary, proposed the Vote of Thanks and we gave the

teachers custom made greeting cards and gifts as a token of love and appreciation.
