Chimpanzees are very closely related to humans, sharing about 98% of our genes. Chimps are highly social animals living in complex communities, playing and learning together. They are highly intelligent, and able to use tools such as rocks and sticks to hunt and probe for food. A chimpanzee’s diet consists mainly of fruit and plants, but they also eat insects, eggs and meat.

Chimpanzees live in both forest and grassland habitats in Africa. They spend most of their days in the treetops where they forage and rest. They are well built for climbing, with long, strong arms and fingers. When chimps do venture down to ground level, they move about primarily on all fours (knuckle walking).

Western Lowland gorillas are large, stocky apes that live in the dense forests of central and western Africa. Adult Lowland gorillas are 4 to 6 feet tall and weigh 150 to 400 pounds. They have no tails and have coarse black and brown hair that covers their entire body except for the face, ears, hands, and feet. They also have silver hair on their back.

Western Lowland gorillas are herbivores. They eat juicy stemmed plants, leaves, fruit, tree bark and tree pulp. They usually eat during the morning and afternoon. Gorillas are typically shy, peaceful animals. They live in groups of 5-15 individuals called troops or bands. Troops are led by a dominant male, called a silverback, which can often be identified by a gray strip of hair on his back.

Gorillas spend their days eating, napping, playing and grooming one another. They build day and night nests from branches, leaves and twigs for sleeping and napping. Western Lowland gorillas are currently on the critically endangered list due to illegal poaching, habitat loss and low birth rates.

Forest hogs live in wooded areas of western and central Africa. Adults can measure from 4 to 6 feet in length, and weigh between 220 to 606 pounds. Females are smaller than males. Forest hogs have lots of bristly black and slate gray hair on their bodies. Their ears are large and pointy, and both male and female forest hogs have tusks.

Forest hogs are mainly herbivores. They use their keen sense of smell and strong snout to sniff out and root for food. Forest hogs are shy and depending on their daily activity, they tend to be nocturnal. They live in groups of up to 6-14 individuals.

Forest elephants were once thought to be subspecies of African elephants, however, they are now considered to be a separate species. They live in the densely wooded rainforests of west and central Africa. Forest elephants are smaller than savannah elephants. Adult forest elephants reach a height of 8 to 10 feet and weigh 2 to 5 tons. Forest elephants have more oval-shaped, rounded ears when compared to African savannah elephants, and they have straighter tusks which point downward.

Forest elephants are herbivores, meaning that they only eat plants and other vegetation. They eat mainly leaves and fruit from trees, herbs and low-lying shrubs. Despite having few natural predators, forest elephants are currently vulnerable due to poaching and deforestation.

The forest buffalo is a smaller sub-species of African buffalo. Forest buffalo weigh 550 to 705 pounds. They have reddish brown hide that is darker on the face. Forest buffalo also have much smaller horns than other African buffalo.

Forest buffalo live mainly in the rainforests of central and western Africa. They live in small herds of between 3 and 30 buffalo. Forest buffalo bulls tend to stay with the herd year-round and often remain for their lifetime.

Forest buffalo are herbivores, eating mainly grasses and other plants growing in forest clearings. They require plenty of water and shade.

Greater Leaf-folding frogs live in rainforests and swamps in eastern and southern Africa. Adults are 1 to 1.5 inches long. These frogs are a silvery white with small black-tipped spines and a broad brown band around the midsection. The frogs’ sides, arms and feet are clear brown with white speckles.

Greater Leaf-folding frogs mate during the rainy months. The males use a distinct mating call from an elevated position on broad-leaved plants. Due to the number of predatory fish in the waters, they lay their eggs on leaves which they fold and glue closed for protection, hence the name Greater Leaf-folding frogs.

Greater Leaf-folding frogs eat spiders, flies, moths and the eggs of other frogs. The tadpoles of these frogs eat mosquito larvae.

Hippos, also known as “river horses,” are semi-aquatic mammals living in shallow lakes, rivers and swamps throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Hippos spend most of their day submerged in the water to stay cool in the hot, tropical climate.

Hippos are most active at night emerging from the water to feed on short, soft grasses and fallen fruit. They will graze until dawn, consuming an average of about 90 pounds of grass per night.

Hippopotami live in social groups of about 20 to 100 individuals. These groups are led by females. Hippos are very sedentary and spend much of their day resting.

The hippo’s nose, ears, and eyes are on the top of its head, protruding from the water when it is submerged. This allows the hippo to breathe, hear, and keep watch for enemies while keeping the rest of its body underwater. Hippos can sink completely underwater and even run along the bottoms of lakes and rivers. Their noses and ears automatically close so that no water seeps in.

In The Congo 4D: Life in the Rainforest we saw chimpanzees using tools to collect honey from under the bark of trees. For today’s activity, you need to think like a chimpanzee. You will go outside to look around for tools in nature that can be used to help you get food and water.

Other Materials:

• Raisins or small fruit snacks (insects and grubs)

• Peanuts (in the shell) (*filled hard pretzel snacks—such as Combos—can be substituted for

students with nut allergies)

• Shallow plastic container filled with water

• Paper or plastic bowl

Teacher’s Note: For younger students, you may choose to provide bins of items to select from, (sticks, small stones, leaves, shells, flowers etc)

NAME: DATE:

Tool Selection Guidelines:

• The tools you select must already have fallen to the ground (no picking or breaking off plants,

flowers, leaves or branches)

• The tools must be natural NOT man made

• GREEN Connection – take a bag outside and help to collect man made trash to help clean-up

your environment
