Chinese Guest Teacher Program

Short-term solution to address teacher shortage Qualified teachers from China work in U.S. classrooms for up to three years

Screened and interviewed by College Board’s interview committee

Pre-departure orientation program and annual professional development summer institutes

Hanban provides teacher round-trip international air tickets

The guest teacher’s compensation is partially subsidized by Hanban.

Selecting the Guest Teachers

Chinese Guest Teachers Qualifications

Three or more years of teaching experience

Teaching certificate in China, i.e., licensed to teach in China

Standard Mandarin (Putonghua) Certificate

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in education, Chinese, English,

international studies, or related fields

Top candidates from an outstanding teacher pool

recommended by the Chinese government

Proficiency in written and spoken English

Chinese Guest Teachers Selection Process

1.Nominated by Chinese employers (schools) 2.Recommended by the department of

education in their home province3.Screened by Hanban4.Interviewed in person by the College Board and NCSSFL Interview Committee

5.Evaluated and selected based on their expertise in pedagogy, classroom management skills, flexibility, adaptability, and language skills

Preparing the Guest Teachers

Chinese Guest Teacher Visa Status

•Teachers will be on a J-1 exchange visitor visa hosted by the International Institute of Education (IIE).

•The guest teachers may work in the United States for up to three years, after which time they are obligated to return to China.

Host School Responsibilities

Chinese Guest Teacher Compensation

Total compensation= Hanban stipend+ District

compensation (partial salary and/or benefits)

Guest Teacher annual total compensation should be

commensurate to that of a U.S. teacher with similar

responsibilities and education in the same district.

Hanban pays a monthly stipend ($1000/month+$1000

extra for the first month) directly to the guest teacher.

Three Compensation Structure Options:

 Option 1: Commensurate compensation package = Hanban stipend ($13,000) + partial salary from school/district

Option 2: Commensurate compensation package = Hanban stipend ($13,000) + partial salary from school/district + value of in-kind housing and/or transportation benefit

Option 3: Commensurate compensation package = Hanban stipend ($13,000) + value of in-kind housing and/or transportation benefit
