Species 2000 is a non-profit 'federation' of 115 database organizations of global species, whose goal is to create a uniform and validated index to the world's known species. Species 2000 China Node is a regional hub of Species 2000 program, and was launched in 2006. The goal of Species 2000 China Node project is to provide a validated checklist of all species distributed in China. Since 2008, the project compiles and publishes electronic version of the annual checklist of the Catalogue of Life China.

Organized by the Biodiversity Committee of Chinese Academy of Sciences (BC-CAS), Catalogue of Life China 2014 Annual Checklist edition has been compiled by Species 2000 China Node, published by Science Press (Beijing) and released on August 14. In line with the Species 2000 data standard, each species page includes scientific name, synonym, common name, literature, classification system, distribution and Chinese name with Pinyin (pronunciation in Chinese). The reviewers for each record are also listed.

ii. Compiling of Species Catalogue of China (printed version)

The project Species Catalogue of China was initiated and sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2013. The goal is to compile 29 issues in three volumes, i.e. plants, animals and fungi for three years, and to update it electronically. The Catalogue will not only provide authoritative and comprehensive species information for protection, monitoring, and sustainable use of China’s biodiversity resources, but also provide scientific support for the Chinese government to fulfill and implement the CBD.

2014 was a key year for the work of Species Catalogue of China. A significant achievement was made last year. A manuscript of eight issues was completed, i.e. two of fungus, and three of plant and animal, respectively. The standard working procedure is first and most importantly, catalogue by authors on the literature, and then peer review by the editorial committee. In this way, we can ensure the work is scientifically sound.

iii. Asia Biodiversity Conservation and Database Network

Asia Biodiversity Conservation and Database Network (ABCDNet) is the first biodiversity informatics project initiated by China. It aims to build a platform for sharing biodiversity information in Asia, and to be an important regional cooperation project in the field.

Background

Asian countries are experiencing severe threats to the biodiversity rich areas and ecosystems. The related information platforms are vital for developing sustainable strategies of biodiversity conservation and management. However, the available biodiversity information in Asia is still limited and scattered. There is no mechanism to harness that information for mega-scale, inter-country planning of conservation strategies. In this context, in March of 2013, the Biodiversity Committee, CAS, organized the Workshop on Biodiversity Data Sharing Environment in Asia at Zhaoqing, Guangdong, China. It was attended by representatives from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, India, the ASEAN Centre For Biodiversity (ACB), the IUCN Asia office, the Chinese National Committee for MAB, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Indonesian Institute of Sciences and Kookmin University, Korea. The participants discussed on the future plans for a possible network of biodiversity information sharing among the Asian countries. All the participants agreed to develop a network of networks, namely Asia Biodiversity Conservation and Database Network (ABCDNet).

Governance

To initiate the development of ABCDNet, a technical working group was established. The working group, co-chaired by Prof. Keping Ma and Prof. K N Ganeshaiah, proposed governance structure, working structure and road map for the development of ABCDNet in coming years. The other members are from Kookmin University, ASEAN Centre For Biodiversity, IUCN Asia office, the Chinese National Committee for MAB, ICIMOD, Indonesian Institute of Sciences. During the meeting held in April, 2014, Prof. Liliya Dimeyeva, from Kazakhstan, was recommended and elected as a member. The office of ABCDNet is affiliated with the Biodiversity Committee, CAS.

iv.GBIF CAS Nodehttp://www.gbifchina.org

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international open data infrastructure, funded by governments, with 106 members. GBIF is the biggest and the most influential network for biodiversity information service, which holds a significant place in the field of biodiversity informatics. By cooperation and seed fund, the organization integrates current available databases of biological records in the world, to build a comprehensive biodiversity information service network, to facilitate the development of research, conservation, and sustainable use of biodiversity. With the development of GBIF, it now has more than 5 million of species occurrence data, mainly observation records and specimen records, providing massive biodiversity information services.

CAS has worked for decades in the field of biodiversity informatics. The collaboration between CAS and GBIF is very important for the research and conservation of biodiversity in China. On behalf of CAS, BC-CAS is in charge of building and maintaining of GBIF-CAS Node. This project was supported kindly by CAS Vice-President Zhang Yaping, and Bureau of International Cooperation, and the former Bureau of Biological Sciences and Technology.

At present, the website of GBIF-CAS Node has been online since July of 2014.

GBIF-CAS Node uses GBIF integrated publishing Toolkit (IPT), posted 530542 species records on the GBIF website, with three types of data. These data are integrated with existing data of China on GBIF effectively, which will allow more people to know and understand biodiversity in China better. Feedback and questions are also expected to further improve data quality and application. The data set can be freely obtained from the GBIF's official website (http://www.gbif.org) or GBIF-CAS Node website.

GBIF-CAS Node will continue to cooperate with other related platforms, introduce GBIF’s technology and huge datasets to Chinese users and publish data to the GBIF global network. This will greatly improve the current weak data situation about China in GBIF network. It will also make the research based on GBIF data in Chinese area more reliable.

v. China Biodiversity Observation and Research Network (Sino BON)

China Biodiversity Observation and Research Network (Sino BON) was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences following the basic principle of “sound planning and unified layout”. Sino BON was a priority supported by the Twelfth Five-year Plan and Thirteenth Five-year Plan of CAS as an observation platform at the academy level. Sino BON was started during the Twelfth Five-year Plan. Establishing 10 thematic networks, one synthesis and data management center were the key of the project during the Thirteenth Five-year Plan.

Sino BON was formally accepted by Asia Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network (AP BON) as its partner on Oct. 11.For now, the organizational structure of Sino BON includes the zoological diversity network, the botanical diversity network, the microbiological diversity network and synthesis center. Six thematic networks belonging to the zoological diversity network are as follows: the mammal diversity observation network, the bird diversity observation network, the amphibian & reptile diversity observation network, the fish diversity observation network, the insect diversity observation network and the soil invertebrate diversity observation network; Three thematic networks belonging to the botanical diversity network are as follows: CForBio, the steppe & desert biodiversity observation network, and the forest canopy biodiversity observation network; Soil microbial observation network belongs to the microbiological diversity network. The synthesis center would take charge of standards & criteria formulation, data management & sharing, and remote sensing with LiDAR.

Long term monitoring on biodiversity and its dynamics followed agreed standard would be carried out and the monitoring data would be submitted to the synthesis center as required by Sino BON. It would contribute to provide detailed and reliable information for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, especially for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

In this talk, he shared his research and thoughts about what the main threats facing the Yangtze finless porpoise, what we should do to save this lovely animal species from quickly becoming extinct, what progress in conservation have been made so far, and what we should do next. The Yangtze finless porpoise is the only cetacean surviving in the Yangtze River now after the possible extinction of Baiji (the Yangtze River Dolphin) which was driven by the disturbance of human activities, and since it has been facing the same kind of the threats faced by Baiji, its population size decreased remarkably during the last several decades, and has come to the edge of extinction.

Xiaoping WuFrom March 10 to 15, Prof. Xiaoping Wu invited Profs. David Zanatta and Daelyn Woolnough visiting Nanchang University and collaborated on the research of conservation of freshwater unionids. Drs. David and Daelyn are mussel experts from the Biology Department, Central Michigan University. The key research objectives are as follows: Determine the amount of genetic variation for several common unionid species in the region; Measure the amount of gene flow between Poyang Lake and the Yangtze River watershed for several common unionids. The data resulting from these objectives will provide a valuable baseline that can guide how proposed water control structures between Poyang Lake and the Yangtze River will function.

SBSTTA 18 Meeting

From June 23-28, The 18th Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) was held in Montreal, Canada, and more than 500 participants attended the meeting. The meeting reviewed the draft of the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook. They noted that progress has been made in many areas, but most of the progress is not sufficient to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets in 2020. The meeting stressed that biodiversity plays a key role in maintaining the ecosystem, and provides essential ecosystem services, which are the basis for sustainable development and human well-being, livelihoods and poverty elimination. Biodiversity can play a positive role in the broader sense in sustainable development. Consideration of SBSTTA should focus on promoting the full implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, so that all parties can make a real contribution to the sustainable development agenda. At the meeting, marine and coastal biodiversity, and climate change-related issues and chanllenges of synthetic biology are hot topics and they should cause us to pay more attention. Commissioned by the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS, Prof. Keping Ma attended the conference as a scientific adviser for Chinese government delegation on June 24-28, and he was responsible for two issues namely the GSPC and the Global Taxonomy Initiative.

COP 12 Meeting

The Twelfth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity was held on October 6-17 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. More than 8000 people from 160 Parties, international organizations, NGOs, etc. attended the meeting. The meeting recognized that global biodiversity resources are being over-exploited in the immediate time-frame, and that biodiversity is essential to the survival of the Earth and is closely related to national economic interest. We cannot just continue to be administrators of documents and records for extinction, threatening extinction, and the destruction of species. Parties must play a more active role if they are not living up to this responsibility. In order to promote the biodiversity agenda, we must have practical ways and means. The meeting emphasized the point: Even though some parts have made significant progress towards achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, in most cases, given the current situation it is not enough to expect progress towards achieving these goals. Therefore, there is an urgent need to take additional action to ensure the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 in the next five years. High-level roundtable discussions on the theme “Biodiversity for Sustainable Development” were held on October 15-16 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The meeting emphasized the integration of sustainable development and biodiversity conservation goals, coordination of climate change, biodiversity and economic development and innovation, peace and biodiversity conservation. The Government of Mexico will host the Thirteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2016.Commissioned by the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS, Prof. Keping Ma attended the Conference of the Parties as a scientific adviser for Chinese government delegation on October 6-17. According to the regiment of the division of labor, the CAS took part in a consultation and negotiation in GSPC, to strengthen the capacity building and technical and

scientific cooperation toward invasive alien species, conservation and restoration of ecosystems and other issues. Overall, these issues are not very controversial, the views of all parties are more consistent with the joint efforts of all Parties. We should strengthen the protection of plant diversity, prevention and control of alien species and the recovery of degraded ecosystems, and hope that developed countries will help developing countries strengthen capacity building, and actively transfer advanced technology to promote scientific and technological cooperation between all Parties. At the same time, we must take advantage of the opportunity to discuss and publicize the achievements in these areas and show the type of case that China has made. During the meeting, Prof. Keping Ma was invited by Biodiversity Center of Japan’ Ministry of the Environment, Missouri Botanical Garden of USA, and the International Center Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), respectively, and gave a report on their Side event entitled “Plant Conservation Progress in China,World Flora On-line Associated Progress in China, Infrastructure Development for Biodiversity Conservation: From national to regional scale”. The report described the progress of biodiversity informatics, monitoring and protection of biodiversity and achieved praise by peers, especially direct appreciation by Mr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, the executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
