Introduction 简介

This card system/student handbook is designed for primary and early secondary

school students who are learning Chinese as a second or third language. It uses a

program learning approach which allows all students at any level from Year One to

Year Seven to progress and/or consolidate classroom learning at their own pace

and interest. It is also advantageous for those students who have started learning

Mandarin from Prep. The Chinese words, phrases and sentences were developed

referring to AusVELS. The book collects over 500 commonly used words and

phrases in daily communication. It covers more than 35 topic areas, including basic

Chinese Linguistic knowledge. This collection also satisfies the international Chinese

learning approach.

Furthermore, most Chinese characters are marked with Pinyin and Tones to help

students read and are explained in English (to the right of the character) in a simple

way that provides convenient and visual assistance for students. Spaces are

available for students to collect their own words as well.

There are seven levels of words and phrases included in this collection. They are

presented in increasing difficulty as well as age related usage.

Level one: Red and/or red shaded words and phrases, which are easiest

and/or most frequently used;

Level two: Orange and/or orange shaded words and phrases;

Level three: Yellow and/or yellow shaded words and phrases;

Level four: Green and/or green shaded words and phrases;

Level five: Blue and/or blue shaded words and phrases;

Level six: Purple and/or purple shaded words and phrases;

Level seven: Other colours;

Page 3: Chinese Words Handbook - Weeblyscgshanglaoshiabc.weebly.com/uploads/2/6/3/4/26343149/han_zi_ben_2015.pdfMandarin from Prep. The Chinese words, phrases and sentences were developed

3

It is recommended that students progress through the words beginning with Red

level however, this is not mandatory as students’ own interest and preferences are

taken into account to encourage familiarity and personal experience.

Students can be provided with individual or whole class support and instruction in

the four dimensions of language development, namely:

Listening – recognition of spoken words and/or sentences;

Speaking – expressing the Chinese words using correct tones and pronunciations;

using substitute strategy (change subjects, verbs or objects in a sentence) to

generate many various sentences.

Reading – recognition of written characters, Pinyin and the meaning;

Writing – copying or free writing of the characters

At the end of the booklet, some handy words and phrases were added for

enthusiastic parents to learn.

It is recommended that students spend five minutes each day to study or review a

few words in this handbook and keep adding new words in the space provided in a

hard copy (You are allowed to print this as hard copy for personal use). This e book

will be updated each year.

I hope that you will find this electronic version is useful and appropriate for

learning Chinese in the primary and early secondary years.
