Balavihar

1. A donation of $100 per child is requested to offset some of the maintenance expenses. The goal of Chinmaya Mission is to provide the service to all the people. If anyone has financial difficulty, please contact us.

2. Balavihar is for children from pre-school to the 12th grade. In each program, children are divided into different groups based on the grades they are attending in school.

3. It is important that all children attend the classes regularly and be very punctual with the time schedule of 10 AM sharp, to obtain maximum benefit from this program.

4. It is essential that children complete their assignments and come prepared for the classes. Children must come with their Sunday school bag, assigned books, a note book, and pen or pencil. Please label everything with the child’s name.

5. Study Group for adults is held simultaneously with the children's classes. Parents are requested to make use of this invaluable opportunity to educate and prepare themselves, and to help and guide the children.

6. The concluding prayers are a very vital part of the Balavihar. All children and adults must attend the concluding prayers.

7. In the best interest of the children, the parents are requested not to remain in the children's classes. However, at least one parent must accompany children during Balavihar.

8. You may contact the child's teacher, if you have any questions or need additional information.

9. The Education Committee requests all the parents to submit written suggestions to further improve our educational activities.

Swami Chinmayananda (The Founder)

The life of Swami Chinmayananda is indeed legendary. His life was one of extraordinary spiritual strength, immeasurable love and tireless service. In less than half a century, Swami Chinmayananda left behind a worldwide organisation, hundreds of institutions, and millions of devotees. This was all aimed at a single theme, discovering the Eternal within. Swami Chinmayananda was born on May 8th, 1916 as Balakrishna Menon (Balan) in Ernakulam, Kerala. His family was very devout in their religious life and had regular contact with holy men. This influence moulded Balan's mental and moral make-up preparing him for the mission of his life ahead.

Balan excelled with his education graduating in Science, Political Science, Law and English Literature at Lucknow University. A man of strong ideas and idealism he entered the field of journalism where he felt he could influence political, economic and social reform in India. At this time he met Swami Shivananda at Rishikesh and became very interested in the spiritual path. Here he found the answers that he was seeking.

Balakrishna Menon took monkhood from Swami Shivananda to become Swami Chinmayananda - the one who is saturated in Bliss and Consciousness. Swami Shivananda saw the potential in Swami Chinmayananda and sent him to study under the greatest Teacher in the Himalayas - Swami Tapovan Maharaj.

Swami Chinmayananda studied for 12 years under Swami Tapovan's guidance, leading a very austere and rigorous life. Then he felt a deep inner urge to share his knowledge and wisdom with the mass of humanity. He descended to the plains and held his first yagna in Poona to a small group of three people. This humble beginning rapidly expanded to more than 500 series of lectures given to audiences numbering thousands.

During his forty years of traveling and teaching, Gurudev opened numerous centres and ashrams worldwide, he also built many schools, hospitals, nursing homes and clinics. As well as reinvigorating India's rich cultural heritage, Swami Chinmayananda made Vedanta accessible to everybody regardless of age, nationality, or religious background.

On 3 August 1993, in San Diego, Swami Chinmayananda attained Mahasamadhi. He worked tirelessly to the very last moment and created an international spiritual revolution.

A great master can be recognised by his humility, loving kindness and depth of knowledge. This epitomises Swami Tejomayananda. Swami Tejomayananda joined the Mission at the early age of 19. He trained as a Brahmachari under the direct guidance of Swami Chinmayananda, at the Sandeepany Ashram in Mumbai. From the beginning he was an exceptional student, easily mastering the Vedantic knowledge and the Sanskrit language. At all times he displayed a deep devotion to his Guru, not surprisingly, his spiritual unfoldment was rapid.

Swami Tejomayananda was first posted as the Acharya for training Brahmacharis in Sidhabhari, before taking monkhood from Swami Chinmayananda. He then became the Acharya of Sandeepany Ashram in Bombay (Mumbai) and finally the Acharya in San Jose, America.

In the advent of Swami Chinmayananda's Mahasamadhi, Swami Tejomayananda was unanimously appointed as the Head of the Chinmaya Mission worldwide. Following in his Master's footsteps and inspired by this noble vision, he continued to bring the message of Vedanta through talks, seminars and retreats around the world and throughout India.

His discourses are unique, an enchanting synthesis of clarity, logic and devotion. These are words from a master whose head and heart are truly integrated. His gentle humour and humility enamour his audiences. His conviction is simple, to actualise the vision of his Master, Swami Chinmayananda. By spreading the knowledge of Vedanta and restoring the moral and cultural dignity of Indian heritage. In such a short time, many projects have become a reality like the Chinmaya International Residential School and Chinmaya International Foundation for research and scholarship in Sanskrit Literature. Guruji is the spearhead of the Missions' 250 centres both in India and abroad, a service he gives his total life to.


Mission and Vision by

God alone does nothing. He is aboktha. Man must strive to improve the world. Man alone, also, would not be able to do anything. He needs the blessings of things which are called God - the blessings of nature.

Though spirituality and religion should not be organized, it can be unfolded; spiritual vitality can be unfolded within the heart of a human being, only in perfect liberty and freedom. The world today has moved to a situation wherein nothing can be done without organization. Even to bless the society, to spread values of life, organization has become very important and necessary. Organization is not in the Hindu tradition. In Vedic days, such organizations were not there. So, if you look for sanction of organized religion or the sanction of Vedic books, you will find none. But as the number of people in the society increased, the problems of the community multiplied, then religion could no longer sustain the needs or answer the needs of the community.

And thus the Puranic days came when religion first started conforming itself as an organization, centered in the various temples in India. But even at that time, there was only a minimum number of them--Badrinath, Benaras, Rameshwaram and Dwarka. Then, five hundred years B.C., organization became more urgently needed and the first Hindu who brought organization in the religion was Lord Buddha. Buddha had to organize his team of workers, unified as bikus, through centers called Buddha Vihars. Within another six or seven hundred years, Buddhism flourished and decayed and became very decadent. And thus, the Indian spiritual atmosphere became very chaotic. Hinduism also decayed. Buddhism also decayed. Spiritual values decayed.

It was at that time that Adi Shankara appeared on the horizon and brought about a certain amount of swift organization into Hinduism. More and more temples were built and as temples became prominent in society, they became the source of inspiration for the community. The temples became the center from where spiritual ideas and thought were spread into the community. But in time even these temples could no longer inspire the members of the community and they also reached a point of decadence.

Again, in the nineteenth century, Vivekananda tried to organize Hinduism and the Ramakrishna Mission came into being. These Missions are nuclei for developing, perpetuating and spreading spiritual and ethical values, religious and moral ideals. There are Christian Missions, Islamic Missions, Buddhist Missions, Hindu Missions, and World Missions. We view them as organizations wherein inspired people come together to work and serve in the society for spreading spiritual values and to improve the moral quality of life in the community. After Ramakrishna and Vivekananda's time, whenever the great acharyas appeared, they got a number of followers who organized themselves for the purpose of their own self-development. Many missions came about. Each acharya was, in his lifetime, able to inspire a large number of people to organize themselves so that they were more effective in their work. These missions were


established as a result of a lot of human effort. Many social and material sacrifices went into creating temples, schools, hospitals and colleges. After all that, as soon as the Master leaves, the Mission collapses; because our loyalty is to the individual personalities and not to the ideal. The Mission's members do not have the vision, but only the membership of the Mission. The members are not inspired by the ideal that the teachers stood for.

We need a fundamental change of attitude. Otherwise we will never be able to organize ourselves for the development of society. We need to understand that an old vision may not suit changing times. We must adapt the vision to the new requirements of modern life. If that elasticity is not there in the vision, that mission becomes redundant. It is not that the vision was wrong, but societies are constantly changing and if the mission and its vision is not elastic enough to accommodate new demands of the community, the mission again fails.

Adaptability has always been the quality of Hinduism. Hinduism has constantly changed, has always embraced the new dimensions and demands of society. When cultural revolutions lose this elasticity, religion becomes a dead carcass also been lost. They think it is only another organization with vested interests. Learn to keep a vision. Learn to have an ideal. Discover it in yourself. No one else can give it to you. True heroism is in living uncompromisingly up to your ideal. The world may threaten you. The community will not easily leave you free. But he is the hero who defiantly stands, firmly rooted, in his own conviction. That one, even a single individual who inspires the entire population, is the true hero, inspiring generations and generations thereafter. This uncompromising heroism of living up to the ideal is the very core of our avatars.

Whether it is Krishna or Rama, what is it that we glorify in them? They had heroism in their life. Otherwise they were like other human beings. We worship them, we revere them because they had heroism to live up to their ideals. Living up to their ideals was not easy. Jesus was crucified. Mahatma Gandhi was shot. But what does it matter? One day everyone has to die. You have not taken a contract that you will die in a hospital bed, surrounded by wife and children. Once you have found the joy and glory, why not die living up to your ideal? That consciousness can arise in you when the vision is clear. He who has a vision rises to the highest. That vision is not a contract; it is not written on paper. It must be enshrined in the hearts and minds of everyone. And where there is a vision, when even a single member has developed and cultivated this courage, this heroism to live up to the vision, then that mission cannot die. It is such a vision that can serve the society, the community and the world at large.

The Guru

Guru is not a person, he is a personality, an institution. He is the radio through which the Lord contacts the student. When a student meets his Teacher, it is always a miracle. Infact it is love at first sight. He is immediately attracted to him and his words ring a bell. Another speaker may speak better but only his teacher will attract him.

If in case we get the rare privilege of meeting such a Master,

and you happen to really understand a little of what he says –then progress has to happen. It is unfailing. It is very productive. Whenever anyone meets his Teacher it is always a miracle.

If, incase you are benefited, do not forget that the Teacher was

brought to you by Ishwara, total vasanas, of which a part were yours, - and remember, there is no difference between God and the Guru, the corporeal entity before you.

Therefore, be on the lookout when you meet a Master.

ye caPy]rmVy´< te;a< ke yaegivÄma>.1. evaà satatayuktä ye bhaktästväà paryupäsate

ye cäpyakñaramavyaktaà teñäà ke yogavittamäù ||1|| Those devotees who, ever-steadfast, thus worship you and those also who worship the

imperishable, the unmanifested – which of them are better versed in Yoga?

ïI Égvanuvac çré bhagavänuväca

mYyaveZy mnae ye ma< inTyyu a %paste ,

ïÏya pryaepeta> te me yu´tma mta>. 2. mayyäveçya mano ye mäà nityayuktä upäsate |

çraddhayä parayopetäù te me yuktatamä matäù || 2|| Those who, fixing their mind on Me, worship Me, ever steadfast and endowed with Supreme

faith, these in my opinion are best in Yoga.

Those who worship the Imperishable, the Indefinable, the Unmanifest, the Omnipresent, the Immovable and the Eternal;

te àaßuviNt mamev svRÉUtihte rta>. 4. sanniyamyendriyagrämaà sarvatra samabuddhayaù |

te präpnuvanti mämeva sarvabhütahite ratäù || 4|| Having restrained all the senses, even-minded everywhere, rejoicing ever in the welfare of all

beings – verily they also come unto Me.

¬ezae=ixktrSte;a< AVyásćetsam! ,

AVyá ih gitÊR>o< dehviÑrvaPyte. 5. kleço'dhikatarasteñäm avyaktäsaktacetasäm |

avyaktä hi gatirduùkhaà dehavadbhiraväpyate || 5|| Greater is their trouble whose minds are set on the Unmanifested; for the goal, the

Unmanifested, is very hard for the embodied to reach.

ye tu svaRi[ kmaR[I miy s<NySy mTpra> ,

AnNyenEv yaegen ma< XyayNt %paste. 6. ye tu sarväëi karmäëé mayi sannyasya matparäù |

ananyenaiva yogena mäà dhyäyanta upäsate || 6|| But those who worship Me, renouncing all actions in Me, regarding Me as the Supreme Goal,

meditating on Me with single minded yoga.

te;amh< smuÏtaR m&Tyus<sarsagrat! ,

Évaim nicraTpawR mYyaveiztcetsam! . 7. teñämahaà samuddhartä måtyusaàsärasägarät |

bhavämi nacirätpärtha mayyäveçitacetasäm || 7|| For them whose minds are set on Me, verily I become erelong; O Partha, the saviour out of the

ocean of finite experiences; the Samsara.

mYyev mn AaxSTv miy buiÏ< invezy,

invis:yis mYyev At ^Xv¡ n s<zy>. 8. mayyeva mana ädhastva mayi buddhià niveçaya |

nivasiñyasi mayyeva ata ürdhvaà na saàçayaù || 8|| Fix thy mind on Me, place thy intellect in Me, then (thereafter) you shall, no doubt, live in Me

alone.

Aw icÄ< smaxatu< n z²aei; miy iSwrm!,

A_yasyaegen tt> maimCDaÝu< xnÃy>. 9. atha cittaà samädhätuà na çaknoñi mayi sthiram |

abhyäsayogena tataù mämicchäptuà dhanaïjayaù || 9|| If you are unable to fix your mind steadily on Me, then by the Yoga of constant practice you do

seek to reach Me, O Dhananjaya.

A_yase=PysmwaeR=is mTkmRprmae Év,

mdwRmip kmaRi[ k…vRiNsiÏmvaPSyis . 10. abhyäse'pyasamartho'si matkarmaparamo bhava |

madarthamapi karmäëi kurvansiddhimaväpsyasi || 10|| If also you are unable to practice Abhyasa Yoga, be you intent on doing actions for My sake;

even by doing actions for My sake, you shall attain perfection.

AwEtdPyzáe=is ktu¡ m*aegmaiït>,

svRkmR)lTyag< tt> k…é ytaTmvan!.11. athaitadapyaçakto'si kartuà madyogamäçritaù |

sarvakarmaphalatyägaà tataù kuru yatätmavän ||11|| If you are unable to do even this then taking refuge in Me, self-controlled, renounce the fruits of

actions.

XyanaTkmR)lTyag> TyagaCDaiNtrnNtrm! .12.

çreyo hi jïänamabhyäsät jïänäddhyänaà viçiñyate |

dhyänätkarmaphalatyägaù tyägäcchäntiranantaram ||12|| Better indeed is knowledge than practice; than knowledge meditation is better; than meditation

renunciation of the fruits of actions; peace immdiately follows renunciation.

inmRmae inrh<kar> smÊ>osuo> ]mI. 13. adveñöä sarvabhütänäà maitraù karuëa eva ca|

nirmamo nirahaìkäraù samaduùkhasukhaù kñamé || 13||

He who hates no creature, who is friendly and compassionate to all, who is free from attachment and egoism, balanced in pleasure and pain and

forgiving;

mYyipRtmnaebuiÏ> yae mÑ´> s me iày>.14. santuñöaù satataà yogé yatätmä dåòhaniçcayaù |

mayyarpitamanobuddhiù yo madbhaktaù sa me priyaù ||14|| Ever content, steady in meditation, self-controlled, possessed of firm conviction, with mind and

intellect dedicated to Me, he, My devotee is dear to Me.

ySmaÚaeiÖjte laek> laekaÚaeiÖjte c y>,

h;aRm;RÉyaeÖegE> muáe y> s c me iày>.15. yasmännodvijate lokaù lokännodvijate ca yaù |

harñämarñabhayodvegaiù mukto yaù sa ca me priyaù ||15|| He by whom the world is not agitated (afflicted) and who cannot be agitated by the world; who is

freed from joy, envy, fear and anxiety- he is dear to me.

Anpe]> zuicdR]> %daisnae gtVyw>,

svaRrMÉpirTyagI yae mÑ´> s me iày>.16. anapekñaù çucirdakñaù udäsino gatavyathaù |

sarvärambhaparityägé yo madbhaktaù sa me priyaù ||16||

He who is free from wants, pure, prompt, unconcerned, untroubled, renouncing all undertakings (or commencements) – he who is (thus) devoted to Me, is dear to Me.

yae n ù:yit n Öeiò n zaecit n ka'œ]it,

zuÉazuÉpirTyagI Éi´maNy> s me iày> .17. yo na håñyati na dveñöi na çocati na käìkñati |

çubhäçubhaparityägé bhaktimänyaù sa me priyaù ||17|| He who neither rejoices nor hates, nor grieves, nor desires, renouncing good and evil, full of

devotion, is dear to Me.

sm> zÇaE c imÇe c twa manapmanyae>,

zItae:[suoÊ>oe;u sm> s¼ivvijRt>.18. samaù çatrau ca mitre ca tathä mänäpamänayoù |

çétoñëasukhaduùkheñu samaù saìgavivarjitaù ||18|| He who is the same to foe and friend, and also in honor and dishonor, who is the same in cold

and heat and in pleasure and pain, who is free from attachment.

tuLyinNdaStuitmaERnI s<tuòae yen kenict! ,

Ainket> iSwrmit> Éi´maNme iàyae nr>.19. tulyanindästutirmauné santuñöo yena kenacit |

aniketaù sthiramatiù bhaktimänme priyo naraù ||19|| To whom censure and praise are equal, who is silent, content with anything, homeless, steady-

minded, full of devotion – that man is dear to Me.

ïÎxana mTprma> ÉáSte=tIv me iàya> .20. ye tu dharmyämåtamidaà yathoktaà paryupäsate |

çraddadhänä matparamäù bhaktäste'téva me priyäù ||20|| They, indeed, who follow this Immortal Dharma (Law of Life) as described above, endowed with

faith, regarding Me as their Supreme Goal,they, such devotees, are exceedingly dear to Me.
