Jeff Reisig as District Attorney is the Chief
Prosecutor for Yolo County. He has a staff of
35 attorneys, but he occasionally tries a case or
two each year himself. Jeff reported some
“eye-opening” statistics for Yolo County on
crime. In 2014, the District Attorney's office
reviewed and filed 9000 criminal cases. Trends
have been showing an increase in property and
violent crime throughout the County. One
particularly violent crime case that Jeff tried himself was the murder of
Leslie Pinkston. Jeff ran through the details and the evidence involved
in the case. Even though there was sufficient evidence to seek the death
penalty, the County went for life in prison, without parole. The jury
had to deliberate for only 3 hours to arrive at a guilty verdict. The last
portion of Jeff’s presentation was a review of the impacts to State law
from the passage of Proposition 47, “The Safe Neighborhoods and
Schools Act.” The act decriminalized numerous felonies down to
misdemeanors. In addition, it required the immediate release of
approximately 10,000 prisoners statewide. Crimes that were once
felonies are now resolved with the issuing of a ticket. Misdemeanors
require no prison time or mandated treatment for crimes associated
with drug offences. Jeff’s advice to the members and guests was to be
vigilant at home or work and be careful for what you vote for.
