CHM1507: Chemistry in the world around us 2 Here are details of a subsidiary module that will be offered by the Department of Chemistry to any Level 1 chemistry student whose course allows for some unrestricted modules in Semester 2. It is a 10-credit course and may be taken only in Semester 2. It is independent of CHM1506 (Chemistry in the world around us 1) and so may be taken without CHM1506.

This module aims to introduce the chemical principles of some familiar aspects of the world around us which we often take for granted and to highlight the significance of chemistry to everyday life, society, the environment, and the future of our planet.

“This module covers at an elementary level the chemistry of many aspects of the everyday. Five distinct four-lecture segments will be given to cover a range of topics spanning all the main areas of chemistry. The module will illustrate the importance of chemistry in society, our familiar surroundings, and its global importance”.

Description The course is largely lecture-based and there will also be some workshops. The lecturers aim to explain some of the chemical principles behind aspects of everyday life and demonstrate that chemistry is indeed the central science. Topics include:

• Metals in the service of man • Chemistry of explosives • Chemistry of things that glow • Chocolate, ice cream, paper, and water • Fuel

Assessment There will be one formal exam at the end of the second Semester.
