RECYCLING HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHEREOver the last few months I’ve noticed

more and more recycling points

popping up around us. It’s great to

see more options to recycle our

waste rather than send it to landfill,

particularly when Newham's

recycling scheme is fairly limited. Just on our

doorstep, we can now recycle most things from empty cosmetics

containers to textiles in any condition. I’ve listed a few recycling

points I’ve come across. There are probably a lot more out there so

do keep a look out when you’re out and about to consider recycling

before throwing things away.

Food & coffee packaging recycling

Hotel Chocolat accepts flexible chocolate plastic wrappers, rigid plastic trays or single-serve

packets from any brand. Simply hand them in to a member of staff.

M&S Food Hall has a bin behind the check-outs where you can drop off plastic bags, film, crisp packets and hard

black plastics that cannot be recycled at home.

Nespresso coffee – Return your used Nespresso capsules and they will be recycled. Coffee grounds will be

separated from the capsule and used for compost. The aluminium capsule itself will be used to

make anything from ballpoint pens to bikes.

Textile and shoe recycling

H&M and & Other Stories – Drop off bags of clothes and textiles from any brand and in

any condition (including torn and stained clothes) to H&M you'll receive a £5 voucher in return. For

clothes and textiles handed in at &Other Stories you will receive a 10% thank you treat.

Schuh accept any type of footwear from any brand and will give you a £5 voucher for every pair.

Wearable shoes will be sent to charity and non-reusable shoes may be converted into brand

new shoes such as the Renew Converse range.

Cosmetics and skin care packaging recycling

John Lewis – Drop off empty beauty product packaging in the recycling bin at John Lewis’s cosmetics department. Packaging included for recycling are; lip balm and lipgloss

tubes, mascara tubes, eye liner pencils and cases, eye shadow tubes, concealer tubes and sticks. Empty non-pressurised

hairspray bottles, shaving foam tubes, hair gel tubes and caps are also accepted.

The Body Shop accepts all beauty product packaging regardless of the brand. A bin is located within the store.

L’Occitane en Provence – If you return empty cosmetic packaging to L’Occitane from any beauty brand you’ll

receive 10% off a new full price item. L’Occitane also sell eco-refill packs of shampoo, conditioner,

liquid soaps and more, which use69-90% less packaging than their regular range.

CAPRI PODS MAKE A RETURN JOURNEY TO THE PARK

Last year you might’ve spotted the bright orange pods travelling around the north of the Park – without a driver! Developed by the AECOM-led Capri consortium, the pods spent two weeks on the Park as part of a research project into connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) transportation.

Local school children, residents and Park visitors all got the opportunity to try out this futuristic technology, but if you missed your chance you'll be pleased to hear the trial is coming back in March.

As before, the trial will be open to the public, with visitors able to book a ride using an app from different stops along the pods’ route. This will be the final trial for the pods, helping Capri explore the possibilities of smart mobility and innovative technology.

Visit CapriMobility.com for more information on the trial and this technology – the pods will be on the Park between 9–20 March.

I've lived at Chobham Manor for one year now. It's a privilege to live in the lovely neighbourhood with Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on the door step. My daughter attends the school close by which is great and I have everything I need so close to home.

Helene, Derny Avenue

I've lived here for two years now. Chobham Manor has a great community, great location and it's great for young kids. In my spare time I rarely leave the local area as I have everything I need close by.

Howard, Weavers Row

We have been living in Chobham Manor for over three years now. Moving south to be near our grandchildren has been a rewarding experience. We have seen the estate grow and enjoy being part of building an active community of all nations and cultures. Through the resident's association we have had some good picnic's and communal events held in the Rain Garden and hope to be part of developing more community and neighbourhood activities.

The wider neighbourhood is great, we don’t have a car and don’t miss it as the transport links are very good for getting about. We enjoy walking along the river Lea and cycling, we keep discovering new cycling routes.

POST OCCUPANCY EVALUATION SURVEY

London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) will be carrying out a survey of Phase 1 Chobham Manor residents.

LLDC aims to promote high quality, sustainable homes, communities and public spaces where people want to live. The Post Occupancy Evaluation involves asking residents how well these objectives have been met. Survey responses, energy and water data collected from some homes will be analysed to inform future developments across the Park and to help LLDC fulfil these objectives elsewhere. This survey will help to learn and continually improve on the aim to promote sustainable developments. LLDC are incredibly grateful for resident’s insights into this survey as part of the first new neighbourhood on the Park.

Opportunities to get involved with the project will be published on the Chobham Life website or you can register your interest in advance by contacting [email protected].

WASSAIL IN THE RAIN GARDEN

Lots of our residents gathered in the Rain Garden for a 'wassail' organised by CROP, Chobham Residents Orchard Project on the twelfth night. Wassailing is an ancient tradition in areas with orchards to wish the fruit trees good health and scare off evil spirits. Singing was helped along by mulled apple juice and cider. Everyone enjoyed nibbling on mince pies and toasting marshmallows on the fire.

Following wassail, a pruning session was arranged and assisted by experts from The Orchard Project charity. Pruning helped to give the apple and pear trees in the Rain Garden orchard a better shape. Let's hope we see a little more fruit this year! Contact Neil Sinden or Cath Arnold at [email protected] to find out more about CROP.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Phase 1 and Phase 2 have now been completed, here’s how the construction is taking shape…

Phase 3

Piling has now commenced on Phase 3B and brickwork across all areas of Phase 3D and 3C. Installation of district heating, water and gtc has commenced along Temple Mills Lane, this work is due to be complete mid-March. New hoarding has been placed around the front of the site to give the site boundary a refreshed look.

Phase 4

Piling started in January 2020 and is due to be completed early this month. New hoarding is being erected around Phase 4 and a new construction traffic management plan will be implemented in the very near future. This month, two cranes will be erected on Phase 4 and one crane on Phase 3. This will mean eight tower cranes will be working across Chobham Manor over the next few months.

YOUR NEIGHBOURS SHOULDN’T HAVE TO PAY FOR YOUR RUBBISH

Reporting bulky waste removal correctly (mattresses, bed, furniture) can avoid unnecessary charges to your block or street should it need to be cleared. Any clearance of bulky waste left unreported can be charged to you and your neighbours as a service charge. Read on to find out how you can clear any bulky items you may have.

Did you know that Newham council offer a FREE bulky waste service?

As a Newham resident, you are entitled to three FREE bulky waste collections per year (April – March). Newham will take up to six items per collection. After the third free collection there is a charge of £20 for the removal of up to six items.

How do I report bulk to Newham?

Contact Newham council on 020 8430 2000, press option 4 and ask for bulky waste. You may also report bulky waste online at newham.gov.uk or via the Newham app.

Once your bulky items have been reported to Newham you will get a ENQ number. Send your ENQ number to us so we are aware your items have been reported.

You can do this by emailing your address and a picture of the items to [email protected] or by text/WhatsApp to 07872 421 177.

Where do I put my bulky items and how long does it take for collection?

We are happy for you to place bulky items in your refuse room or at the front of your property if you live in a house.

Newham advise that items are collected within two workings days and items should be made ready for collection in the designated area once reported.

What is classified as bulky waste?

The following items are classified as ‘bulky waste’ that Newham council collect:

• Beds/mattresses

• Wardrobes/chest of drawers

• Toys

• TV’s

• Washing machines

A full list of these items can be found at newham.gov.uk along with items they do not collect.
