Making music can be a really enjoyable and rewarding activity. As many people will tell you, you don’t have to play at a high level in order to get lots of pleasure from music. And to join one of our music courses it’s not necessary to have big ambitions to appear on stage or TV! Learning and playing music might just be something you’d like to share with friends or family. Or it might be something you’d like to do with others at a local event when more experienced.
All tuition is in groups of between ten and fifteen people (except for singing). No-one has to play or sing on their own and classes are non-competitive. Previous learners have often said how helpful it has been to have the support of a group in learning to play an instrument or sing. And on top of this you would have the support of skilled tutors who know the particular challenges of getting started in music as an adult – something you can’t get from just following a tutor book. Regular practice is of course important if you’re going to make progress, but little and often – for example when you’re waiting for the kettle to boil! – is better than one hour once per week!
We have a new guitar course for complete beginners starting in January, and there are also several follow-on guitar courses: Beginners – Term 2 courses for people with a little experience; Beginners Plus courses for those who have played for about a year; and Improvers for people with two or more year’s experience. And if singing is something you’ve always wanted to do, why not enrol on either of our Singing Group courses? You’ll have lots of fun learning many different types of songs – popular, traditional, classical – from this country and from around the world, and you’ll learn just how much pleasure there is in singing with other people.

The Adult Education Service offers a range of courses that make keeping fit and healthy easy and enjoyable. We have classes for you whether you are starting to include exercise in your life, wishing to improve your fitness or wanting to try something new. We offer fitness courses at different levels of physical activity and for different abilities and courses run at various venues across the city.
Maintaining a regular exercise programme can be difficult, so enrolling on a course that lasts several weeks can help to provide you with the structure, motivation and support needed to achieve your goals. If you are looking for a good all-round workout to improve fitness, stamina and flexibility you can choose from a wide range of keep fit classes which are suitable for different levels of fitness. For less active people or those with a disability or medical condition we offer Gentle Keep Fit, which includes chair based exercises. Keep Fit classes are for people wanting a more challenging workout. Courses such as Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are offered at beginner, intermediate and mixed ability levels
and will improve and maintain your fitness as well as introducing you to relaxation techniques and helping your mental well-being. Swimming and other water based courses are offered for a variety of ability levels. You can learn to swim, improve your style, practice a new stroke and become more confident in the water all at your own pace and in classes suitable for adults of all ages. Exercising in the water is relaxing and enjoyable and Aquafit is suitable for people of all levels of ability and you don’t have to be able to swim to join in. If you are a good swimmer, you can join our Swimming Pool Supervision course to qualify as a Lifeguard (see page 19, Special Interest). New for this term is Gentle Stretching, this is a chair based stretching programme for people who want a more gentle form of exercise. It includes joint mobility exercises, gentle stretches using a chair and relaxation/breathing techniques to help you relax. Gentle Stretching is suitable for people with limited mobility or with a medical condition.
