Parents may have a num-ber of options when choos-ing schools for their chil-dren. Public schools areresponsible for educatingmillions of youngsters everyday, though private schoolsalso may make great op-tions for certain students.Families must weigh thepros and cons of schoolingdecisions carefully to findthe best fit, as school helpsset the foundation for lifeahead.

Private schoolsWhile most people think

of religion when they con-sider private schools, manysuch schools in the UnitedStates are not affiliatedwitha religious organization. Ac-cording to data fromNiche,more than 30 percent ofthe roughly 25,000 pri-

vate PreK-12 schools in theUnited States are not basedin religious education.Private schools can ben-

efit kids in various ways.Each private school fol-lows its own direction,which means there can bevaried educational goalsand approaches. Privateschools have more flexi-bility than public schoolsin regard to their curricu-lum, as they are not boundby state or federal man-dates. This can be a boonto a student who learnsin a specific way. Privateschools tend to have smallclass sizes and studentbodies, which can makefor individualized atten-tion.The most prominent

drawback for privateschools is the cost. Many

private schools cost thou-sands of dollars per year,and such costs may not in-clude uniforms and sup-plies. Another potentialcon is some private schoolssimply cannot offer thesame vast level of optionsas a public school. Throughtaxpayer funding, publicschoolsmay be able to bringin more resources and offera greater array of classes.

Public schoolsPublic schools are often a

natural choice because theyare free to attend.With a more varied cur-

riculum and greater pro-pensity to offer more af-ter-school activities thansmaller schools, publicschools can be a great draw.Plus, children who attendlocal schools may feel more

in touch with the commu-nity and take pride in par-taking in the town or city’straditions.Enrollment is often con-

sidered a downside to pub-lic schools. Many pub-lic schools have a higher

teacher-to-student ratiothan private schools. Thismay lead to a “lost in thecrowd” feeling for studentswho may otherwise benefitfrom more individualizedattention. What’s more, be-cause public schools are

bound by set curriculums,teachers may not have thesame flexibility in what orhow they can teach as theircolleagues who teach at pri-vate schools.There are other pros and

Many children are intro-duced to music instruction atschool. After being introducedto band, chorus and various in-struments, students may be ea-ger to explore music.Young students are often in-

troduced to the recorder or uku-lele in the early grades and thengiven the opportunity to joinprimary bands as they movethrough elementary school andinto middle school. Some chil-dren also may want to supple-ment school music lessons withprivate music tutors, who canprovide more in-depth instruc-tion.Parents considering making

a commitment to music instruc-tion may find that kids benefitfrom being involved with mu-sic in many ways, some of whichmay be surprising.• The New England Board of

Higher Education says severalstudies show that consistent

“When one door closes, another door opens,”assured Alexander Graham Bell, who turned the20th century on its ear with his inventions. Andas the workplace continues to reinvent itselfseemingly every day, Macomb Community Collegeis constantly evaluating and updating its programsso that doors keep opening for learners and jobseekers of all ages and interests.

King Germaine Jones decided to give Macomb’srobotics training a shot, admittedly cynical afteryears of failed dreams and promises of jobs thatnever materialized.

“I didn’t want to put the time and energy into itif it was only going to be another dead end,” saidJones, who completed his training in a few monthsat Macomb’s Michigan Educational Training Center(M-TEC). “But the instructors knew what they weretalking about and that gave me the confidenceto proceed.”

Hired for a robotics position two weeks beforehe graduated, Jones continued to progress in bothskills and salary and is now self-employed as arobotics contractor.

“Before M-TEC, it was difficult for me to find ajob,” said Jones. “Now these skills are allowingme to pursue other interests and provide for mydaughter. It definitely has been a turning point inmy life.”

Tyler Giza graduated from Henry Ford II HighSchool last year looking for a career path that wouldkindle his curiosity. He found it in Macomb’s GlobalSupply Chain Management Program.

Upon the recommendation of his “mentor,”Patrick Greek, Macomb business faculty, Giza was

the only community college student to compete on ateam in Wayne State University’s Supply Chain CaseCompetition, sponsored by Ford Motor Company,earlier this year. His team won.

“It really sold me on supply chain management,”said Giza, who will transfer to Wayne State Universitynext year to pursue a bachelor’s degree. “It doesn’tmatter whether it’s frozen dinners or automobiles,every company depends on its supply chain.”

For Suneeti Dash, Macomb’s Certified NursingAssistant (CNA) Program (offered throughWorkforce and Continuing Education) was a doorbetween the bachelor’s degree she earned at CentralMichigan University and the doctoral degree she ispursuing at Kansas City University of Medicine andBiosciences in Missouri.

“As a pre-med student, it’s always important toget clinical experience.” said Dash, who completedMacomb’s CNA Program in six weeks and internedat an adult care facility as part of the coursework.“The CNA program was the best and easiest way toget patient care hours. I learned a lot about helpingpatients feel comfortable.”

Marianne Pupka admits she was anythingbut comfortable when she enrolled at Macombafter her husband died and she lost her job as a

graphic designer - all in the same year. Shegraduated with an associate degree in interactivemedia in December and was selected to be one ofthree speakers at Macomb’s commencement.

“My studies took me on an incredible journey,”said Pupka, who was hired full time as a digitalmarketing assistant at the Lorenzo CulturalCenter following her graduation. “My Macombexperience...sends me on my way a healed andreinvented person.”

It is impossible to ignore the im-mense popularity of digital learningtools in today’s schools. Teachers rou-tinely turn to online tools and avail-able applications to offer students allthe resources they need to becomewell-rounded individuals.According to research from Grun-

wald Associates, LLC, 71 percent ofparents embrace mobile devices andfeel they open up learning opportuni-ties for kids that didn’t previously ex-ist. The research also suggests that asimilar percentage of parents wouldlike teachers to recommend apps forstudents.Navigating learning apps can be

daunting due to the sheer volumeof apps available. According to Appsfor Education, there are more than500,000 educational apps currentlyavailable for download. Apps canbe stimulating and fun, but findingquality resources may involve sortingthrough those that aren’t necessarilyvaluable. The following are some appsparents may want to consider.• Memrise: Learning a second or

third language can be a boon to stu-

dents of any age. Some schools maybe limited in the number of languagesthey offer. Therefore, an appmay be agreat resource for students looking tolearn a new language. Memrise drillsstudents on vocabulary, phrases, au-ral recognition, and more.• Kahoot: Kahoot is a platform to

create games and review content.Players answer questions on their in-dividual devices, while games are dis-played on a shared screen. Kahoot canbe an ideal way for several studentsto prepare for a test in a digital studysession.• Reading Eggs: This comprehen-

sive learning system covers essentialcomponents of reading: awareness,vocabulary, phonics, f luency, andcomprehension. Parents can see prog-ress reports and know if and whereextra attention may be necessary.• Edmodo: This app is designed

to streamline workloads for teach-ers and help make it easier for themto stay connected with the classroomand their students. Parents can setup accounts and stay abreast of theirchildren’s activities, grades, mes-

sages, and progress. Though it’s nota learning app, Edmodo can be a valu-able tool for classroom management.• Epic: This online children’s sub-

scription book service offers immedi-ate, on-demand access to high-qualityreadingmaterials for children ages 12and under. Voracious readers will al-ways have content they can access, inaddition to audio books, educationalvideos, and educational quizzes.• Photomath: This app enables stu-

dents to snap pictures of complicatedmath problems and get step-by-stepdirections on how to answer them.Instead of simply giving the answer,Photomath provides students withthe tools to answer the problems ontheir own.• StudyBlue: Students can create

and share mobile flash cards, studyguides, quizzes, and choose fromother study materials to help rein-force lessons.Educational apps play a vital role

in educating today’s students.

Through mentorship and collaboration, CMU students and faculty are working together to identify and solve problems withworldwide impact and lead groundbreaking research. Through these experiences, students gain hands-on experience andgraduate career-ready.

There are experiential learning opportunities across all of CMU’s more than 200 undergraduate academic programs.

Students have access to the 227 laboratory facilities starting their freshman year on campus.

In those labs, students are examining antioxidants to find more effective ways to prevent cancer, studying the effects of stress andaging on reproduction to help to solve fertility problems, determining how to cut off energy to a cell’s mitochondrial DNA to stopthe spread of diseases, and researching how to deliver DNA to cells affected by brain disorders to treat diseases like Parkinson’sand Alzheimer’s.

“Being able to do cancer research at only 19 years old is amazing. I get to make a big difference,” said Gretchen Holtgrefe, abiochemistry major who started researching at CMU during her freshman year and focuses on determining which antioxidantsare effective in preventing cancer.

CMU students are not just making discoveries on campus, they’re presenting their findings at international conferences. Biologymajor Lateef Shafau presented his research alongside Dr. Ute Hochgeschwender at the National Society for Neuroscience. Hisresearch, which focuses on using light from proteins to help stimulate neurons in the spinal cord, is aimed at improving recoveryin the lower extremities after spinal cord injuries. Lateef added an element to the study where swimming is used to help strengthenand practice using the injured limbs.

Through experiences like those of Gretchen and Lateef, students engage with other professionals in their fields of study,challenging them to think about new ways to approach their research.

“It’s been an incredible privilege to research as an undergraduate at CMU,” Lateef said. “The partnership with Dr. Hochgeschwenderand CMU has really shown me the ins and outs of medicine.”

CMU’s hands-on opportunities spread across all academic programs. Students are developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by taking the concepts they learn in class to the real world.

At CMU’s Biological Station on Beaver Island, students are working on Great Lakes preservation and conservation. They areresearching ways to clean up potential environmental damage in the case of an accidental oil spill, conducting wetlands researchthrough a grant from the EPA and investigating what is causing the disappearance of Great Lakes whitefish in hopes of restoringtheir population.

CMU’s student-driven research also includes a mobile weather observation vehicle outfitted with computers and meteorologicalinstruments to measure temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, and more. Students use this technology to followweather-related cold fronts and collect data about storms. CMU is the only Michigan university to have such a vehicle.

CMU students have been cataloging and excavating a site at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron, Michigan, since 2016.They engage with park visitors, share their findings with the community and answer the public’s questions which provides careertraining for those hoping to pursue jobs in cultural resource management. Their work also helps preserve local heritage sites andcreates a greater public appreciation –for them.

Students across campus are working collaboratively to help educators position themselves to help children cope with traumaticexperiences called Adverse Childhood Experiences. Research has shown that children with a high number of ACEs are more likelyto struggle in school and have lifelong health effects. Through an expanded psychiatry residency program and cross-campusefforts to create educational podcasts about ACEs and trauma-informed practices, both CMU students and Michigan educatorswill be better equipped to understand the effects of ACEs and counteract negative experiences.

Education students are following suit, taking a trauma-informed approach to consider the root cause of classroom behavior andcreate safe learning spaces. Through a workshop series, students learn about how stress and trauma affect brain development,how it can take form in their students, and how to help children understand and cope with ACEs.

As a Creative Action Partner, CMU collaborates with the Traverse City Film Festival and provides students with on-site learningexperiences and resume-building opportunities. Students earn internships with the festival, which is fully run by college studentsand volunteers. Seven students served as interns, four students had their short films screened and three film school workshopswere taught by CMU faculty and students in 2019. From keeping things running smoothly to producing real, meaningful piecesused throughout the event, students showcase skills they’ve learned and walk away with film credit on their resumes.

With countless opportunities and hands-on experiences, it’s easy to see why more than 90% of our graduates are employed orpursuing an advanced degree within six months of graduating. Nearly every one of those students is in a career related to their major.

Today’s teenagers arebusy. According to theAmerican Time Use Surveyfrom the Bureau of LaborStatistics, the average highschool student spends justunder an hour and a halfeach weekday participating

in extracurricular activitiesthat include playing sports,working/volunteering andreligious activities.With so much do and

lots of encouragement toparticipate in their com-munities, teens can eas-

ily find themselves overex-tended. Extracurricular ac-tivities are important, andsome have even been linkedto improved academic per-formance. But it’s equallyimportant that high schoolstudents avoid burnout,

which can adversely af-fect their academic perfor-mance and how much theyenjoy school and other ac-tivities.Parents can employ var-

ious strategies to help busyteenagers avoid overextend-ing themselves.• Learn the signs of burn-

out and look for them. Eventhemost overextended teen-ager probably enjoys manyof the activities he or sheengages in. So it’s unlikelythat kids will self-reportburnout to their parents,teachers, coaches, or otherauthority figures. Parentscan learn to spot the signsof burnout to identify iftheir child is overextended.According to Understood.org, a website sponsored by15 nonprofit organizationsdevoted to helping parentsof kids between the agesof three and 20, procrasti-nation, negative attitudes,testiness, difficulty concen-trating, and a disinterest inthings kids once liked aresome potential indicators

of burnout. Parents who no-tices any of these signs intheir children might wantto look at their kids’ sched-ules to see if their childrenare simply taking on morethan they can chew.• Teach kids time man-

agement skills. Time man-agement skills can help kidsmake effective and efficientuse of their time. Encour-age kids who are strugglingwith their schedules to usea calendar to plan theirweeks. Knowing what’s ex-pected of them each daycan help kids develop a planto get everything done. Inaddition, when kids make alist of their daily activities,parents can go over that listwith them to see if they’retaking on too much. Dis-cuss the calendar with kids,and if kids express feelingsof exhaustion or burnout,go through the calendar tosee where they can free upsome time, even if it meanscutting some activities outof their schedules entirely.• Teach kids the art of

prioritizing. Parents knowthat some tasks are moreimportant than others. Butkids may not be so savvy.Teach kids how to priori-tize, emphasizing that ac-ademics always come first.Give kids some credit ifthey’re initially resistantto dropping some activi-ties, as that can indicatean admirable willingnessto commit. But emphasizethat school comes first,and that activities that arelow priority might need tobe sacrificed during theschool year. In addition,point out that certain ac-tivities that are not school-related can be revisited inthe summer, when kidstypically have less hecticschedules.Burnout can be harm-

ful to high school stu-dents. Parents can workwith their children to en-sure they aren’t overex-tending themselves.

Participation in sportscan be an important com-ponent of a student’s over-all school experience. So itshould come as no surprisethat the number of partici-pants in high school sportsincreased for the 29th con-secutive year in 2017-18, ac-cording to the annual HighSchool Athletics Participa-tion Survey conducted bythe National Federation ofState High School Associa-tions.Students may have var-

ious reasons for joiningschool-sanctioned sportsteams, including engagingin physical exercise, boost-ing their résumés with ex-tracurricular activitiesand finding shared inter-ests with fellow students.School sports provide thisand more.Of course, participation

in scholastic sports first in-volves signing up for theactivity. To ensure they’reeligible to participate inscholastic sports, studentstypically have to followsome key steps.• Physical examination:

A doctor will have to pro-videmedical clearance, con-firming a student is healthyenough to play. Check withthe school athletic direc-tor or school nurse regard-

ing the “expiration date” ofa physical. Students are of-ten required to get a physi-cal each year, though somemight need to get one be-fore each season. Pediatri-cians and wellness clinicsoften get inundated withrequests to fill out physi-cal forms prior to sportsseasons. So contact physi-cians well in advance of thestart of the season to en-sure that the physical canbe completed and the formshanded in on time.• Health waivers: Doc-

tors alone are not respon-sible for giving the okay toparticipate in sports. Beforea child can be deemed eli-gible, parents often have tofill out a detailed health his-tory for their children, list-ing any possible allergiesor conditions that may af-fect participation. They alsomay have to provide a list ofcurrent immunizations andeye exam results.• Enrollment: Schools

may have different sign-uproutes for the various sportsseasons. Schools generallyoffer fall, winter and springsports. Students may needto sign up on an official listwith the athletic director orcoach. Other schools mayutilize a digital system forenrollments. Schools typ-

Others may not catch on asquickly as their parents desire.Every student has unique learn-ing requirements, and some-times all it takes is some one-on-one intervention with anexperienced tutor to turn theacademic tide.The National Tutoring Asso-

ciation reports that the num-ber of individuals offering pri-vate tutoring has increased dra-matically in recent years, whichcan make finding a tutor chal-lenging. It also means parentsmay face stiff competition in re-gard to procuring the servicesof qualified tutors. But parentscan employ various strategies toimprove their chances of find-ing skilled tutors to work withtheir children.• Specify what you need

done. The more clearly you de-fine what you and your child

hope to gain from individual-ized instruction, the more ca-pably you can zero in on a tutorwhowill meet those needs effec-tively. Certain tutors specialize in cer-tain subjects or skills. Lean to-ward those tutors for advancedlessons in tricky subjects likemaths and sciences.Upon hiring a tutor, give it

a few lessons to see if the tu-tor clicks with your child. Setbenchmarks for success that thetutor can work toward. If the re-lationship is not working, startthe process over.
