Choir sings their way to a superior score By Isabella DeJong One of the most important events for students in Del Webbs choir was on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. That important event is Festival, which is held at UNLV! Every single year, hundreds of kids look forward to singing three amazing songs that they have been working on for a long time, and their families look forward to hearing their childs beautiful voice. Festival is a big deal for all middle school choirs. It is where a bunch of middle schools go to Ham Hall at UNLV and sing in front of judges. Then, the choirs get graded on a scale of one to three. One is the best score you can get, while three is the worst. All the Del Webb choirs got ones, which is outstanding on their part. There are several judges listening to the choir sing, and they whisper their corrections, if any, into smaller microphones attached to their shirts. The judges then give their scores to UNLV students who make an average of those numbers. According to Addie Zolik, The choirs at Del Webb love fes- tival, and the best part is actually sing- ing the songs because you get to show the judges and audience your hard work”(Zolik). After the choirs are done singing, they go to the back of the stage and sight read. Sight reading is reading off of a sheet of paper with different notes on it. They also do scales. The scales include do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, and do again. Their scores are affected by this a lot, which means that they have to know the notes and scales in advance. Overall, the two choirs did amazing! Good Job Del Webb choirs!

Forensics goes to Federal court By Kennedi Fredricks As 3rd graders, field trips were the norm but in 8th grade… not so much. So

when the 8th grade fo-rensics class heard they were going on a field trip to the Las Ve-gas Federal Court-house, they couldn’t believe it. This wasn’t a normal trip to the zoo either, they got to witness a judge and their jury convict criminals. But, before they could even make it on the trip Mrs. Essy had to make sure all their grades were in check. Forensic students had to have had an A or a B in all classes. While they were on the trip they learned many things including, “About how court works and the different types of roles each person plays in a court case,” said Gavin Schultz. Averie Brewer also said, “We learned about the justice system and the process in which criminals are sentenced to jail or prison. We also learned about the experiences that judges undergo everyday.” The forensics class works very hard everyday. They learn

a new lesson plan each week including, DNA, bugs, murder cases, and criminals. Hugh Rumbaua stated, “We do different activities that adapt to the dif-ferent subjects we do.” Keep doing what you do best Forensics class!

Fine Arts visits the happiest place on Earth

By Kennedi Fredricks

We all know the happiest place on earth, the Magic Kingdom, or better yet Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom! We also all know how much little kids’ hearts long to go to this magical place! But wait, not just kids are eager to get on the road, but also Del Webb’s very own band, orchestra, and choir students! The students that belong to these incredible departments have worked very hard over the last semester not only to put on amazing concerts and plays but most of all, their hard work paid off when each student was able to attend the Fine Arts field trip! The fine arts field trip was a way to reward the students of their hard work and to also remind them of their hard work. This trip is a huge op-portunity to be able to go somewhere that is filled with fun and excitement and in the process, get to experience it with close friends. The very lucky students that attended this trip got to go to Disneyland! The students left at 4 a.m. on Fri-day the 12 and returned on Saturday the 13 at around 10 p.m. The trip was a

total of 2 fun-filled days. The students enjoyed the field trip, including Layla Al-Rashed, saying ,“It was very exciting and I would do it again!”. At Disneyland they got to venture out into groups of friends through the Disneyland park and the Cali-fornia Adventure Park. When they first arrived they got to tour the Disney recording stu-dio and they even got to catch a glimpse of some Disney short films! Not only did they do that but they experienced joy and exhilaration at the happiest place on earth! New, exciting changes have happened at Cali-fornia Adventure Park in the last year. They took one of the most famous rides that had been there for 23 years and spruced it up a little. They took the Tower of Terror and changed it to, “Guardians of the Galaxy- Mission Breakout!” Even though many people miss our beloved Tower of Terror, the new ride seems to be a big hit! One of our stu-dents even saying it was their favorite ride!

Casual for a Cause By Kennedy Mitchell On February 23, the Casual for a Cause was for the American Heart Association. The donations went toward research to ben-efit the many Americans affected by heart disease. The American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives from diseas-es and strokes. This is why the American Heart Association has spent billions of dollars since 1949 on research and programs to combat heart disease and stroke. We also support programs to improve patient care and the prevention of heart disease and stroke. We even received a thank you note from them! Dear Students of Del Webb Middle School, We at the American Heart Association want to extend a big THANK YOU to each and every one of you for fundraising and for spreading our heart-healthy message, both at your school and in your community. Your efforts will help people of all ages learn the importance of heart health through nutrition guidance, exercise-based events, and CPR training. Every dollar raised makes a big difference, and we appreciate your hard work and dedication to the cause! You are all HEART HEROES, and you should be very proud!!! Thank you so much again, and have a heart healthy day!

Super Science: 7D Inventions By Emi Rucker

Are we in the future or what? Mr. Scroggie's science classes have all made their mark in the 3D printer, supplied by the one and only Ms. Roddy! In early March, Mr. Scroggie’s 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and

6th science classes embarked on a scientific jour-ney into the world of 3D printing! The process was simple - or so they thought. First, the science classes split their class into groups, each trying to make a device that would purify water. Second, they went onto a website called Tinkercad (www.tinkercad.com) to make their ideas. Third, everyone turned their project in for the class to see and take a vote on who’s was the best. The winner was 2nd period! Although 2nd period’s genius vote won, 1st period was extremely close too, and the difference was by a drop. The process took a whole class period on March 13, 2018. The only bad thing that each device had in common was the plastic that the devices were made out of. While the water was being boiled, the heat took over the

plastic and the plastic started melting! Despite these casualties, the devices went on to their fate. Good job to all participates!

Tips to stress less By Emi Rucker Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from ad-verse or very demanding circumstances. How do you defeat it though? Well, here are some tips. 1. Get organized. Disorganization is a major source of stress and this time of year is a great time to go through your drawers and closets and even your car and get rid of any junk, trash or unnecessary stuff you built up in 2017. Even better would be to take this stuff and just throw it all away. But either way, getting yourself organized is extremely therapeutic and ultimately relaxing. 2. Make a list of your top ten sources of stress. Many people avoid facing their stress, and as a result, these issues stay there and cause even more stress. Spend just fifteen minutes this week identifying your top ten sources of stress and you will immediately start to feel better. Why? Once you identify the exact sources of your stress, your mind starts to focus on possible solutions and, as a result, you’ll feel more relaxed. 3. Accept what is and can’t be changed. Acceptance is probably the hardest route to calmness that you have at your immediate disposal,

all the time. So, when things start to get tense, just accept, that for whatever reason, this is the way things are. Then remind yourself that: This too shall pass. Total acceptance of your situation, even if it’s just for the time being, has an amazing calming effect, and can even help others because they may feel reassured of your ac-ceptance. 4. Connect with eve-ry single person you meet. Human beings are wired to connect. Every time you connect with another person, feel-good chemicals are released into the brain. You can connect with everyone you know and even people you don’t know like cashiers and bank tellers (who wear name tags) by simply looking them in the eyes and while maintaining eye contact, addressing this person by name, and thanking them for helping you in any way. https://hbr.org/2012/12/nine-ways-successful-people-de

Flying into the future

By Jenna Goedeke

Drones improve our socie-ty because they make everyday activities easier and faster. Drones also help us today because they are used in the military. They are used as remote weapons that are too dangerous for direct human use. Drones are used for every-day applications like photog-raphy, videography, and track-ing device. “Drones possess a far greater number of beneficial and benign uses; some of which are starting to find their way into society and have the potential to be truly revolutionary.” Drones

are also used to observe animal wildlife and how animals interact with each other. Drones process information like no other comput-er can. With their specialty of fly-ing high into the sky, they can track information from up above. It may be a few years until we see the skies filled with autonomous drones however, businesses are already working drones into their everyday technology!https://

Meteor marches through the sky By Kennedi Fredricks

On January 16 people across the states of Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois got to experience a once in a lifetime sight! A meteor flew across the sky producing rumbling sounds and colorful explosions. The only reason we can see meteors from earth is because they broke through our atmosphere, if it hadn’t we wouldn’t have seen it as it

would have been to far away, America’s NASA space agency veri-fied. NASA also said that they me-teor was about 2 yards wide and moving at a speed of 28,000 mph, so don’t blink because you may miss it! But up in space, 28,000 mph is quite slow for a meteor but

on earth you may not have even known it went by. While the meteor was flying by, it exploded a few times creating loud roar-like sounds spooking a lot of people. But occurrences like these happen all the time such as “Leonid Meteor Storms”. The Leonid Meteor is actually a comet named Tempeltut-tle. Among many other comets, the Tempeltuttle orbits the sun every 33 years. Earth is lucky enough to witness this comet when we enter its orbit. Spectators can expect thousands of blue and green and purple meteors to dominate the sky is just as little as a few hours. The first sighting was in the year 1833 and ever since people have gathered to watch this amazing event take place.

Do you scream for ice CREAM?

By Sammie Lobosco The restaurant CREAM is

known for their ice cream sandwiches with almost any cookie on the outside, and almost any ice cream flavor in the middle. Also, if you want, there are 23 toppings you can have on the side, stuck to your ice cream, such as sprin-kles, nuts, mini marshmallows, and much, much more. You can even have two types of cookies. A different one on each side! I recently went to CREAM, and I ordered snickerdoodle cookies with vanilla ice cream and mini marsh-mallows as my topping. You can get it in a bowl or a wrapper. Whichever one you would prefer! It was one of the best foods that I’ve ever eaten in my life! It was very tasty, and it had a bunch of flavor. I could even taste a lot of the vanilla ice cream! It was a really good amount, and it gave you a super good amount of ice cream for just one sand-wich! Along with the cookies being huge, you got everything you had in your sandwich in each bite. Thankfully, the service was absolutely great, and I didn’t have to wait one second for them. The workers greeted us once we walked in the door, and served us with smiles on their faces! They were very friendly, and let us take our time in fig-uring out our order. The worker that

served me even asked me if I wanted my cookies warmed up so that it would give you that nice, sweet, and warm and cold flavor. Nevertheless, the at-mosphere was super friendly, and it was a super upbeat place. I did not once in my visit feel overwhelmed, or attent-less. It was extremely clean and there was even a hand sanitizer stand so that your hands would be clean for the ice cream sandwich. The tables, chairs, and the floors were spotless, and there were napkins at each and every table for you to use anytime that you needed. CREAM might have to be my new favor-ite place, and I’m going to tell all of my friends about it! I will absolutely come back, and I will definitely return to CREAM! The options seem limitless! You could even have waffles, brownies, a mini cookie sandwich, or even a do's ant instead of the cookies, and if you just want one of those, or if you just want the ice cream, they could do that too! It is a super fun, good, and a com-munity friendly place where you could go to relax, and socialize! Overall, if I could go back to CREAM, then I would!

New species of spider found? By Bam Apodaca

Have you heard about the new species of spider that scientists found in China? If you haven’t, the species has such good camouflage that it looks exactly like a leaf! This arachnid was found in a rainforest in China. It is a brown and green spider that can disguise itself on almost any tree and look ex-actly like a leaf. This species actually doesn’t have a name yet since it hasn’t fully been iden-tified as one. The spider is so rarely found since it has such an amazing disguise. Scientist

Matjaz Kuntner says, “Its disguise is so good that it might explain why so few of these spiders have been collected. Even trained scientists have a hard time spot-ting them.” (https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/11/spiders-leaves-china-camouflage/)

Spring break vacation ideas By Isabella DeJong and Jenna Goedeke

Popsicles, relaxing, warm weather, and fun! Spring break is going to be here super soon and the students at Del Webb are def-initely ready for some fun! Some things students love to do during spring break are swim-ming, going to the park, hanging out with friends, and traveling! “My fa-vorite thing to do on spring break is to watch Netflix,” says Kaiya Sim-mons ,seventh grader at Del Webb. You could also go on VACATION! The first place to go to is a tropical island. Some islands are Cancun, Hawaii, and the Ba-hamas. These are good choices because there are plenty of things to do there. You can go snorkeling, swim with dol-phins, and eat delicious foods that aren’t available in Nevada. Another

good place to go to on Spring Break is Brian Head in Utah. Brian Head is a place that is known for their skiing and snowboarding. There are also cabins that you can stay in. This is another good choice because you get away from your electronics for a few days to really enjoy the scenery surrounding you. You also get to spend more time with your family, which is always good. Last but not least, if you can’t decide on a place

to go, you can go on a cruise! Cruises are a good choice for spring break be-cause you get to go to all

sorts of places. There are different cruises that go to different places, so you have plenty of options to choose from. Cruise ships are also really nice for spring break because you get to stay on a really nice boat, and then go to a really nice place after, so it is basically a win win. There are so many options for spring break, but here are a few to get you started!

Black Panther pounces into theaters By Dallas Smith Black Panther was a movie that came out Febru-ary 16, 2018, and has made over $242 million in tickets here in the U.S. and more than $426 million worldwide. As of now, according to www.Forbes.com, “Marvel's 'Black Panther Tops $800M Worldwide.” The main story of Black Panther is about the new black panther, T’Challa, becoming king after his father dies in the bombing of a building in Captain America Civil War. After T’Challa wins a ritual of combat and becomes Black Panther, his long lost cousin, fueled by anger, wants to take the crown from the main family as revenge for his father’s death caused by T’Chaka, T’Challa’s fa-ther. Then Erik Killmonger, T’Challa’s cousin, challenges T’Challa for the pow-ers of the Black Panther in order to give powerful vibranium weapons to other parts of the globe with suffering African Americans that can’t defend themselves. T’Challa loses the first fight and gets thrown down a waterfall, only to be saved by the Jabari tribe. T’Challa’s love, sister, and mother go to the Jabari tribe in the mountains with a heart-shaped-

herb to restore his health and powers, They then go back to Wakanda to take back the throne from Erik. This leads to a fight be-tween the general’s soldiers, another warrior tribe, and the Jabari tribe. Then T’Challa en-gages Erik once more to finish the combat ritual, which he defeats Erik and brings Erik to the famous

Wakandan sunset Erik’s father kept tell-ing him about. Then Erik decides to take out the blade in his body that he got im-paled into him during their fight, out, and bleeds to death, not wanting to be a prisoner. After the first few credits we are shown a clip of Black panther con-fessing that Wakanda has a mountain full of vibranium and that the futuristic Wakanda will be helping the world in the field of medicine and science. After the rest of the credits we are shown a clip of the winter soldier waking up in a Wakandan camp and walking outside of the tent he’s in, then is told that he, “has much to learn by a woman that seemed to be taking care of him.” If you have not seen this movie, it is a MUST SEE over Spring Break!

Soaring into victory By Jenna Goedeke

Del Webb’s archery team took a field trip to South Point to compete in their most recent competition. Del Webb’s archers got the chance to com-pete against other school’s archery teams and their teammates. It also gave them an opportunity to interact with other archers from different

schools at the competition. Congratulations to all of Del Webb’s archers and coaches for placing fifth in the compe-tition! The archery team pre-pared for this competition by practicing in the morning at the school’s gym. Havani Kooner (sixth grade) from the archery team says,”My favor-ite part of the field trip was seeing people from my school, and all of the other archers.” Our archers put a lot of hard work into this competition while practicing, and compet-ing.”What motivated me was

all of the amazing 7th and 8th grade archers, and how they played,” says Havani. This was a great experience for Del Webb’s archery team and they wish to participate in another one soon!

Women's cross country takes the gold for U.S.

By Eric Polhemus

During the Winter Olympics, there are many sports! Many which include skiing, snowboarding, bobsledding, curling, hockey, and skating. For the 2018 Winter Olympics we are focusing on a major win for the women’s cross-country skiing. Competing for the U.S was Jessica Diggins, 26, born in Afton, MN. She has been skiing ever since she was a little girl and her dream was to be in the Olympics. Her hard work paid off. She was scaling the steepest hill of the course, currently in third place, she said to herself that winning an Olympic medal was not enough, that she wanted gold! And that’s exactly what she did. The last stretch of the track she found a spark inside her that made her push harder than she’s ever pushed before! "Around that final corner I felt like I was uncoiling a spring and letting it go," Diggins said. "Giving it everything I had, digging as deep as I could and putting it all out there. When your team is counting on you, you don't give up ever." As soon as she crossed the fin-ish she collapsed of exhaustion and excitement. She lay on the ground shaking and crying with tears of joy! That’s when she realized that she is taking home an Olympic gold medal for the United States!

Girls’ lacrosse team dominates By Kennedi Fredricks

This year’s girls’ lacrosse team is thriving! With an undefeated rep-utation since 2015, this year’s team is sure to succeed! Lacrosse is a sport that requires endurance, skill, and patience. During women’s la-crosse, you must catch and pass the ball using a lacrosse stick. The de-fenders must defend the goal and make sure the other team doesn’t score. Like the defenders, they’re

also attackers, and their job is to get scoring positions around the goal. The rest of the team covers the field and throws passes or catches the ball in order to make a goal. For the 2017-2018 Del Webb Women’s lacrosse there are three coaches, Jenn Gordon, Brian Villmoare, and Doug Phornhil-ip. Mrs.Gordon used to live in Massa-chusetts and was the ladies lacrosse coach there as well. She moved to our lovely home of Las Vegas in 2017, as a result of her getting ac-cepted at UNLV. She is now the asso-ciate professor and director of Anat-omy and Physiology at UNLV. Her passion of lacrosse stemmed from

when she played lacrosse at SUNY Oneonta college from 1992-1996 in New York. When talking to her about coaching she said, “I started coach-ing so my girls could learn from the sport.” Here, Mrs. Gordon is talking about her two little girls Cassie and Brooklyn Gordon. She also talked about her favorite part of coaching, “ My favorite part about coaching girls is being a female role-model. I think it is good for females to learn from other females.” And that is exactly what she is doing. At every meet she inspires these girls to work harder! The ladies lacrosse team meets every Tuesday and Thursday and practice’s from 4pm-5pm. Their practice con-cludes of warm ups, drills, and at the end, they play games among each other!
