By 1987, I’d had it with music. Rock was kinda cool, but I needed more. I had played all of my parents Beatles, Zeppelin and Stones records. KISS had long since taken the makeup off, and the likes of AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple just didn’t really cut it anymore. I needed something else. A new ‘fix’. WelI, I got it!One night a mate of mine played me Motley Crue’s Shout At The Devil. I had never heard anything so intoxicating, so dark and so evil : I LOVED IT! And so it began…The late 80’s was a golden age for hard rock and heavy metal. The album and singles charts were littered with ‘hair bands’, our TV screens were filled with the videos of the bands I was becoming obsessed with. In the pre-Internet era, I had to rely on fellow metal heads at school to let me into their tape trading circle (yes kids, this was how it was done once upon a time) no computers, no bloody iPhones, just patience, excitement, passion and a shitload of blank tapes! From there I began my metalmorphosis: a never ending quest for new heavy music. The brief was simple - the heavier, the better. But there was one band in particular that completely changed EVERYTHING!One word. METALLICA.From then on, metal bought many great bands to the attention of my ears – Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Machine Head, Iron Maiden, The Cult, Dream Theater, Fear Factory, Korn, In Flames, Judas Priest, Testament, the list is endless.I love the fact that metal is now bigger than it’s ever been. It has defied time, logic and trends. Metal is a survivor. It feeds on the passion of the bands and the fans that keep listening to them, keep buying their physical albums (we metal folk don’t care much for the digital stuff), buying concert tickets and of course the merch… the ultimate metal accessory; the badge of honour if you will.“Do you choose what I choose? More alternatives. Energy derives from both the plus and negative.” METALLICA , ‘EYE OF THE BEHOLDER’, 1988.

C. GILLHAM “Metal chose me.”J. A BLAKE “”...I was listening to Impaled Nazarene at my Mum’s house and she said ‘how can you listen to this noise’ and I said ‘Mum it takes skill to play like that, if you can play drums like that, you are totally in my band.’ ”M. LANGSTON “It’s the music that has helped me get over the issues I’ve had in life more than anything else and is cheaper than therapy :)”B. N MOORE “In the words of an overused internet meme, ’I don’t always listen to metal, but when I do, it’s always f*****g awesome.’ ”S. RICHTER “Same reason I play video games: so the media will have something to blame if I ever crack it and go on a murdering spree.”M. P MORRIS “Metal breeds metal, it drives me to be better and harder.”N. A. SIRAKIS “Is there really anything else??? Give me Metal for breakfast, lunch and supper. And as a nightcap.”

ONE METALHEAD’S STORY

Page 4: Choose Metal

Machine F*ckin’ Head! The chant adopted by loyal fans the world over almost says it all. Determination, brutality and perseverance, Machine Head have earned their stripes as modern thrash metal’s champions through clenched teeth, making their victory all the more sweet. Machine Head’s patented harmonics are on display throughout their seven studio albums, and offset by nimbly-plucked classical guitar and driving pace, with Robb Flynn’s distinct vocal as capable of light and shade as their trademark instrumentation.

PHIL DEMMEL - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I was initially drawn by the theatrics of hard rock acts Like KISS, Aerosmith, AC/DC and Alice Cooper. That was followed by the energy of the music of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and really solidified with the thrash movement of Metallica and Slayer. I loved the reciprocation from the stage to the pit and back to the stage that thrash was all about. It was a jeans and t shirt image that I was really a part of and seeing it onstage was a real feeling of belonging.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “I enjoy most things melodic and brutal. I like a vocalist that can sing but that can be powerful as well.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “Metal is a release in both a physical and mental sense for me. But it’s not just a music form, but a way of life. Going to a show and getting out frustrations in the pit or stage diving or screaming out lyrics that I identify with is therapeutic, and so good for the soul.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED MACHINE HEAD TRACKS “’Seasons Wither’ and ‘Imperium’ (from Through the Ashes of Empires); ‘Halo’,’Now I Lay Thee Down’ and ‘Farewell to Arms’ (from The Blackening); ‘Be Still and Know’, ‘Locust’ and ‘Darkness Within’ (from Unto The Locust). All very representative of what MH are doing right now.”

CHOOSE PANTERA

Pantera. The word alone conjures images of ALL that is pure, American heavy metal. While the band – founded by brothers Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell – started in 1981, it wasn’t until 1990 when they released Cowboys From Hell – which many fans credit as their ‘official’ debut - that they got serious about their metal and morphed into one of the biggest bands of our time, credited with the development of several, if not all other movements in the genre. Noted for their extremes (Vulgar Video anyone?) Pantera will always be a hallowed name in metal circles and an absolute ‘must have’ for any serious metal fan.

VINNIE PAUL - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I fell in love with KISS and to me, they were metal and I loved the heaviness and extremes of the music!!”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “Groove metal…I’ve never been into speed. I love a solid groove!”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “Because it’s the best! Like KISS said ‘you wanted the best, so you got the best!!”

YOUR RECOMMENDED PANTERA TRACKS “’War In Me’, off my new record Band Of Brothers. That’s what groove metal is all about!”

CHOOSE LAMB OF GOD

From: Richmond, Virginia, USA Formed: 1990 Current line up: Chris Adler (drums), John Campbell (bass), Mark Morton (guitar), Randy Blythe (vocals), Willie Adler (guitar) Label: Roadrunner Web: lamb-of-god.com

There are metal bands and then there is LAMB OF GOD. 22 years ago, Lamb of God took the first steps that in 2012 would see them rise to the forefront of modern heavy metal. They paid their dues and withstood the knocks as an underground, un-commercial metal act, their uncommon work ethic, uncompromising musicianship and intellectual lyrics setting them apart - and into un-chartered territory. This perseverance paid off and today they are one of the titans of the genre, with their most recent album Resolution debuting at #3 on the national ARIA Chart. Not that commercial success matters to Lamb Of God, other than allowing them to continue to tour all over the world, cut quality albums in the studio and make a living squeezing every ounce of passion in their souls making ground-breaking heavy metal.

“The first and foremost thing that you have to realize about LOG is that we do exactly what we want, when we want, and how we want to,” declares vocalist Randy Blythe. “We always have and we always will.

CHOOSE TRIVIUM

From: Orlando, Florida, USA Formed: 1999 Current line up: Matt Heafy (vocals/guitar), Corey Beaulieu (guitar), Paolo Gregoletto (guitar), Nick Augusto (drums) Label: Roadrunner Web: trivium.orgTrivium were thrust skyward as traditional metal’s great new hope when they first appeared on the metal scene and by the time they had released their Roadrunner debut – Ascendancy – were already being compared in the press to their heroes Metallica and Slayer. These days they are credited more with giving their trademark influences a modern edge and winning themselves a whole new generation of metal fans in the process.

PAOLO GREGOLETTO - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I didn’t truly discover heavy music ‘till about 12 years old. Musically, metal spoke directly to me; there was a lot of substance to the playing and complexity in the writing. Seeing my first few shows made me a life-long fan, and that in my opinion, is why heavy music has remained a constant among changing fads and musical tastes.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “The first genre that sparked my interest the most was thrash metal. It was no coincidence that the first few bands I discovered were the ‘Big 4’ (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth), yet I didn’t stop with just those four bands, they were the starting point on a rather large family tree of thrash. Overkill became one of my favorite bands, and still is to this day.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “For someone that plays an instrument, it will challenge you as a player more and more. For someone that doesn’t thrash, death and black metal are a great start. But the beauty of heavy music is that many bands take from all of the genres and mutate it into different unique sounds.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED TRIVIUM TRACKS “Ascendancy and In Waves would be the two albums I would first recommend to some one to give them a good idea of what we do. From Shogun, including the title track, ‘Throes of Perdition’, ‘Down From The Sky’, ‘Torn Between Scylla’ and ‘Charybdis’.”

CHOOSE SLIPKNOT

From: Des Moines, Iowa, USA Formed: 1995 Classic line up: Joey Jordison (#1 – drums), Shawn Crahan (#6 - percussion), Craig Jones (#5 – samples), Mick Thomson (#7 – guitar), Corey Taylor (#8 – vocals), Sid Wilson (#0 – turntables), Chris Fehn (#3 – percussion), Paul Gray (#2 – bass), Jim Root (#4 – guitar) Label: Roadrunner Web: slipknot1.com

Born of the near-desolation of Iowa, SLIPKNOT crawled, slowly, menacingly from the cornfields, like something out of Hades, driven on by one purpose and one purpose only – world domination. With their numbered jumpsuits and self-made masks, their nihilistic approach to their art was like none that had come before them. Slipknot changed the entire landscape of the way the world viewed metal, creating some of the most twisted and depraved albums to hit the mainstream charts despite holding nothing back on their path to the outer extremities of the genre. A revelation to their growing legions of ‘maggots’ Slipknot are an unstoppable machine who claimed the #1 spot for two weeks in Australia with their latest album All Hope Is Gone and achieved platinum sales for every one of their four studio albums. To see Slipknot live is to see a nightmare bought to life in all its hell-fire and glory. Both brutal and beautiful.

VOLUME 3 – THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES (2004)

“When we were starting out, we had all these strikes against us,” says frontman Corey Taylor. “We were from Iowa, there were nine of us, we wore masks, we wore coveralls, we played metal. Hard metal. But our music stood up. We’re much more popular now and it wasn’t because of our image. It was the music.”

METAL MIX TAPE - DEZ’S TOP (6)6(6)

DevilDriver are one of the most consistent metal bands on the Roadrunner roster and have a distinctive modern sound. Known for injecting as much groove as bite into their sound, DevilDriver have ascended the ranks to become respected artisans of the genre. Their name refers to a word in Wiccan law which translates loosely to ‘driving away of evil’ but they always raise all kinds of hell. If you get a chance to catch them live, don’t pass it up!

DEZ FAFARA - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I found my parents record collection and after listening to 3 Dog Night and Steppenwolf I gravitated towards KISS Alive and Aerosmith Rocks and it was done. I was bit! Then came punk Rock !!”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “I like a groove ... Motörhead is right up my alley !”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “Its aggressive, it’s cathartic in nature and it gets your blood pumping !”

YOUR RECOMMENDED DEVILDRIVER TRACKS “I would say ‘Clouds Over California’ (from The Last Kind Words) for a DevilDriver tune it’s got a little of everything in it! Turn it up!”

CHOOSE STONE SOUR

From: Des Moines, Iowa, USA Formed: 1992 Current line up: Corey Taylor (vocals), Jim Root (guitar), Josh Rand (guitar), Roy Mayorga (drums), Rachel Bolan (bass) Label: Roadrunner Web: stonesour.com

When STONE SOUR released their self titled album in 2002, they were considered an interesting Slipknot side project with promise. After all, they’d been just that in the decade leading up, with key members Corey Taylor and Jim Root using it to let off creative steam in between their more pressing commitments. By the time they delivered Come What (Ever) May they were regarded as a band in their own right, capable of selling out their own headlining shows and garnering Grammy nods. With Audio Secrecy, the incessant buzz for Stone Sour proved they may just be modern rock’s latest champions. Now with fourth release House Of Gold And Bones – Pt I on the horizon, Stone Sour are drawing another line in the sand with their trademark solid hard rock style delivered as a concept album with two distinct parts. Part II is expected in 2013. Stay tuned!

“This album will be another progression for the band,” states guitarist Josh Rand of the forthcoming album. “Lyrically, the album follows one character to that complex moment in his life, when he finally has to decide which path to take. Each song will tell the story from different sides of the character’s personality, with the listener ultimately deciding how the story ends.”

CHOOSE DREAM THEATER

From: Long Island, USA Formed: 1985 Current line up: James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Mike Mangini (drums), Jordan Rudess (keyboards) Label: Roadrunner Web: dreamtheater.net

METAL MIX TAPE - JOHN’S TOP (6)6(6)

Dream Theater are undoubtedly the most successful progressive metal band of all time, with over 10 million sales of CD’s and DVD’s worldwide and a career spanning more than 25 years . Out lasting trends and drawing in fans from all walks of life Dream Theater appeal to anyone with a keen interest of drinking in musicianship of the highest caliber, with every detail honed to its finest, most opulent point.

JOHN PETRUCCI - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I was drawn to the sound and role of the guitar in metal music. It always sounded so mighty and powerful! Also, the locked percussive nature of the riffs in so many bands such as Metallica for example, as well as the full and punchy production style of metal albums really pulled me in.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “Initially it was Maiden, Priest, Ozzy, Metallica etc. but it has certainly expanded through the years.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “The musicianship required to play in today’s great metal bands is most often at a very high level. Some of the most amazing guitar players, drummers etc play metal and the style and shoot off genres are as vast as they are diverse. You can really get lost in it and discover a lot of incredible music.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED DREAM THEATER TRACKS “Since we are widely known as fusing progressive rock with metal, I would urge people to check out our more adventurous tracks such as Metropolis (from Images and Words), The Dance of Eternity (from Scenes From A Memory) or Outcry (from A Dramatic Turn of Events).”

From: San Francisco, California, USA Formed: 1983 Classic line up: Mike Bordin (drums), Billy Gould (bass), Roddy Bottum (keys), Mike Patton (vocals), Jim Martin (guitar) Label: Warner Web: fnm.com‘Heavy’ can be a slippery term, just like ‘timeless’ – especially when it comes to an artist like Faith No More. One of the true chameleons of the genre, they are the kind of twisted band that inspire other twisted bands. Who Care A Lot does well to pull into its winding, sonic maze a very respectable representation of the light and shade reflected among their five studio gems from The Real Thing to Angel Dust, to King For A Day and back to the aptly titled Album Of The Year. Get this or die not knowing…

CHOOSE FAITH NO MORE WHO CARES A LOT? – THE BEST OF FAITH NO MORE (1998)

From: Palm Desert, California, USA Formed: 1987 Classic line up: John Garcia (vocals), Brant Bjork (drums), Josh Homme (guitars), Nick Oliveri (bass) Label: Warner Web: kyusslives.comStoner rock is a term often associated with Kyuss but it doesn’t even come close to describing their contribution to heavy music. They are a legendary artist, whispered with reverence by music fans covering every facet of the rock to metal spectrum and a band that birthed an entire genre from the dust and sand of the desert from which it was created. It could be said every studio album they made was ‘The Best of Kyuss’, but Mushas Gracias should get you started. Features b-sides and singles spanning their hallowed career.

CHOOSE KYUSS MUCHAS GRACIAS - THE BEST OF KYUSS (2000)

From: Los Angeles, California, USA Formed: 1989 Classic line up: Burton C Bell (vocals), Dino Cazares (guitar), Christian Olde Wolbers (bass), Raymond Herrera (drums) Label: Roadrunner Web: fearfactory.comIf ever the term ‘ahead of their time’ applied to any artist of the 90’s era metal bands, it was Fear Factory. One of the first to blend the dual vocal styles of ‘death’ and ‘melodic’, Fear Factory also had a very distinctive, industrial guitar riffing trademark as well as a clinical drum style. They pioneered this sound and inspired many artists from the ‘nu-metal’ era by developing a multi-genre whole that was far greater than the sum of its parts. Their ‘best of’ features tracks spanning their most active era.

CHOOSE FEAR FACTORY THE BEST OF FEAR FACTORY (2006)

From: Belo Horizonte, Brazil Formed: 1984 Classic line up: Max Cavalera (vocals/guitar), Andreas Kisser (guitar), Iggor Cavalera (drums), Paulo Jr (bass) Label: Roadrunner Web: sepultura.comWhen the metal bible is finally written (some day!), Sepultura will have a whole chapter dedicated to their glory! The Brazilian natives were raised on a staple diet of thrash with their earlier releases emulating that style before they unleashed their own brand of tribal metal that would forever change the landscape of the genre with anthems such as ‘Roots Bloody Roots’, ‘Refuse/Resist’ and ‘Attitude’. This ‘best of’ showcases many of their finest moments and there are plenty to choose from. As raw and brutal as they come!

They are committed only to pushing musical boundaries even deeper by exploring their own creative process to the fullest. As anyone who saw them at Soundwave 2012 will attest, you do not ‘watch’ Mastodon, you behold them and revel in their magnificence.

His style is as distinctive as his sound and he is as infamous as any of the monsters his name embodies or the characters he brings clawing into your nightmares on the silverscreen. Page 14: Choose Metal

When Killswitch Engage emerged during the golden age of ‘nu-metal’, their sound immediately stood out from their peers. Pursuing a harder, more aggressive and abrasive take on modern metal, since they didn’t fit the ‘scene’ they quickly set about establishing their own : metal-core. If ever there is a band that remembers their roots it’s KSE; they recently re-united with original singer Jesse Leach who in 2013 is set to appear on their sixth studio album, taking the notion of ‘full-circle’ to extremes…just like everything else!

JOEL STROETZEL - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I chose metal because it was energetic. Something about the sound of fast drums and distorted guitars just grabbed me!.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “When I was young I liked all the glam rock and metal that was on MTV... But then I discovered bands like Metallica, Slayer and Testament, the thrashy stuff. From there I got into death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and Disincarnate.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “I would recommend metal for its energy and musicianship... Some of the best players in the world are underground metal guys that few people have heard of. A common mistake people make is claiming that all metal sounds like noise. Just because it’s loud and aggressive doesn’t mean that there isn’t talent and passion going into it just like any other form of music or art.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED KILLSWITCH ENGAGE TRACKS “If someone were to ask me what KsE song I would recommend I’d probably go with ‘My Last Serenade’ (from Alive Or Just Breathing), or ‘End of Heartache’ (from The End Of Heartache). I feel they both represent every element of what we do.”

CHOOSE OPETH

Opeth exist in a genre of one. The forward-thinking Swedish titans, seamlessly and fluidly combine metal, classic rock, prog, folk and free form jazz to varying degrees, throughout all ten of their studio albums. The band hold an almost holy reverence among fans, each release adding a new dimension into the Opeth spectrum and extending their reputation as masters of dark and shade by spinning haunting tales and possessing all within their reach.

FREDRIK ÅKESSON - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I was into rock before Metal. Mom and Dad listened to Beatles and Stones, Elvis, Abba and some Swedish folk music. When I heard metal/hard rock I thought it was a development and it sounded dangerous and the image was inspiring as well.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “Mostly I listen to classic metal like Maiden, Priest, Sabbath. But some more extreme stuff too like Death, Darkthrone, Morbid Angel, etc.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “Metal doesn’t follow trends and there is a wide sonic spectrum of all the bands out there.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED OPETH TRACKS “’The Devil’s Orchard’ (from Heritage), ‘Ghost of Perdition (from Ghost Reveries)’, ‘Heir Apparent’ (from Watershed), ‘Demon Of The Fall’ (from My Arms, Your Hearse). ‘The Lotus Eater’ (from Watershed) . ‘Window Pane’ (from Damnation), ‘Black Water Park’ (from Blackwater Park).”

From: Stockholm, Sweden Formed: 1990 Current line up: Mikael Åkerfeldt (vocals/guitar), Martín Méndez (bass), Martin Axenrot (drums), Fredrik Åkesson (guitar), Joakim Svalberg (keys) Label: Roadrunner Web: opeth.com

CHOOSE MEGADETH

From: Los Angeles, California, USA Formed: 1983 Current line up: Dave Mustaine (vocals/guitar), David Ellefson (bass), Shawn Drover (drums), Chris Broderick (guitar) Label: Roadrunner Web: megadeth.com

Behold, mere mortals – you are in the presence of the true greatness! Of thrash metal gods: MEGADETH! One of the card carrying members of the ‘Big 4’ alongside Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, every time Megadeth release an album, it is true history in the making. In fact many fans will attest that they are producing some of the best metal of their career in recent years, with some of their most devastating moments still appearing on their latest releases as opposed to languishing in revered, but much older back catalogue. They’ve had their share of ups and downs but perseverance and determination counts for everything these days and with ‘the Daves’ (Mustaine and Ellifson) reunited for their forthcoming album, perhaps the best is yet to come? All hail!

ENDGAME (2009)

“After the smoke had cleared from personnel and label changes, I knew that regaining respect for me and for Megadeth was going to be a huge undertaking,” says Dave Mustaine of the process re-tooling Megadeth after what is considered the “classic” line-up. “It was much like trying to turn a battleship - no, more like an aircraft carrier- around.”

THE LOST CHILDREN (2011)

ASYLUM (2010)

TEN THOUSAND FISTS (2005)

THE SICKNESS (2000)

From: Chicago, Illinois, USA Formed: 1996 Current line up: David Draiman (vocals), Dan Donegan (guitar), John Moyer (bass), Mike Wengren (drums) Label: Warner Web: disturbed1.com

Disturbed are duly credited as being one of the hardest working heavy rock bands of the last decade, sitting somewhere in between the driving, stripped back sound of traditional hard rock with the ferocity of more modern styles. According to frontman David Draiman, the lyrics that he writes are inspired by life experiences, presenting his ideas with cryptic lyrics. Witnessing just one live performance will turn you into a lifelong fan, making it impossible to deny why Disturbed have managed to debut at the top of the charts, album, after album. Raise your Ten Thousand Fists in the air for Disturbed!

DAVID DRAIMAN - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “It had power, depth, and beautiful darkness like no other genre.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “I like all kinds but a melodic hook always wins me over when immersed in a powerful groove.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “It is the best cathartic release I know of.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED DISTURBED TRACKS “I love them all! Pick one!”

CHOOSE DEFTONES

From: Sacramento, California, USA Formed: 1988 Current line up: Chino Moreno (vocals), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), Chi Cheng/Sergio Vega (bass), Frank Delgado (turntables/keys)Label: Warner Web: deftones.com

Textural, haunting and evocative, the DEFTONES are deceptively tuneful and alarmingly heavy, see-sawing between melancholy reflection and jaw-clenching frustration with ease. They incorporate disparate elements of hard rock, heavy metal, punk, psychedelia, classic, alternative and electronic within their tumultuous grooves. You don’t just hear a Deftones album, it positively possesses you in its uniquely timeless and beguiling way which is why their fanbase have remained staunchly loyal to them throughout the infamous ups, downs and personal challenges that span their lengthy career - which began as a garage band when their key members were just 15. Could they be preparing to release album #7?

“There are so many emotions that music can give you, and if you explore all sides of those, it can be really amazing,” says Chino Moreno. “We connect with different emotions because we listen to everything out there. Then when we play, it’s not a real conscious thing, but the emotion builds and it takes us in a lot of different ways. I think that’s what music’s supposed to do.”

CHASING GHOSTS (2012)

GLORY DAYS (2010)

SEVERED TIES (2008)

From: Gympie, Queensland, Australia Formed: 2003 Current line up: Joel Birch (vocals), Troy Brady (guitar), Ahren Stringer (bass/vocals), Ryan Burt (drums) Label: Roadrunner Web: theamityaffliction.net

The Amity Affliction have gone through their fair share of ups and downs on their road to worldwide notoriety, but if their determination doesn’t speak volumes for their commitment to their values, then one listen to any of their studio albums will. Over the last ten years, The Amity Affliction have persevered and gone from strength beyond strength to gain an inspirational amount of support and momentum, emerging as a leader in the local hardcore scene. Revved up rhythms, soaring melodies, blistering breakdowns and hilariously subversive non-sequitur song titles are the stock-in-trade of the hard-partying mischief-makers in The Amity Affliction. Yet cloaked beneath the mayhem lay the stark realities of humankind’s dark struggle with mortality. Simply put, these four Australians have found reasons to smile even as they confront some of the harder truths of life.

AHREN STRINGER - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HARDCORE/PUNK/METAL? “Because my parents hated it.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF HARDCORE/PUNK/METAL? ”All of it really, anything with big breakdowns, singalongs and anything fast really.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE HARDCORE/PUNK/METAL? “I guess because it can really pump you up, get you excited and it really helps you let off some steam.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED AMITY AFFLICTION TRACKS ”Probably ‘Youngbloods’ (from Youngbloods) and our newest track ‘Chasing Ghosts’ from our new album Chasing Ghosts.”

1. AC/DC - ’ Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap)’2. LANA DEL REY - ’ Off To The Races’

Masters of elegance, melodrama and symphonic grandeur, Within Temptation are one of European metal’s greatest success stories. The sheer beauty of their trademark sound is an exhilarating listen – a monument of opulent melodies, sweeping orchestral arrangements and tremendous, building power. Within Temptation posesses depth and an enchanting element of fantasy that has put them at the fore of the symphonic metal genre.

SHARON DEN ADEL & ROBERT WETERHOLT - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? SHARON - “My first love was Nirvana, which is grunge, later I got into Metal because of Robert (Westerholt). I fell in love with Paradise Lost and Type O Negative. I loved the heavy tunes in combination with melody.“ROBERT - “I guess, the record collection of my parents…Elvis and Abba for me and The Eagles, Journey and ELO for Sharon. I always loved the overwhelming rush, the adventurous, the mysterious and the out off the ordinary which all comes together in metal.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? SHARON – “The melodic ones, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osborne, so many different bands.”ROBERT – “From Pantera, Carcass to Alter bridge, Linkin Park, Iron Maiden and Metallica. Always a sucker though for strong riffs, hooks and melodies.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? SHARON – “Why not? I won’t recommend just metal, I recommend any music I like. It can be any kind as long as it touches me. It doesn’t need to be metal.“ROBERT – “Ha ha, I don’t and I don’t have to. If metal is for you it will cross your path…you will be drawn to it…inescapable!”

YOUR RECOMMENDED WITHIN TEMPTATION TRACKS SHARON – ‘Iron’ and ‘In The Middle Of The Night’. They are my favourites off the latest album (The Unforgiving).

Korn will never forget where they came from: a dark place where salvation arrives in the form of twisted, throbbing guitar riffs, syncopated chaotic funk beats, a schizophrenic bass thump and Davis’ unmistakable howl. Korn are well noted as being one of the most experimental heavy bands of the last 20 years and they established themselves as genre ‘game changers’ back in the’90s. Their most recent album The Path Of Totality sees them collaborating with Dub-Step artists including Skrillex: a testament to why they have sold over 33 million albums worldwide during the course of their career.

JONATHAN DAVIS - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “I didn’t choose metal when I first listened to music. Probably a year before I got into Korn is when I really got into it. I had a Motley Crue record and a Dio record that I loved. And then, Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power did it for me- I was hooked.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? Grindcore- ”I love Cannibal Corpse. It’s gotta be Death Metal when I’m in the mood- Extreme Metal.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “It’s an aggressive form of music that I love. I dig what it’s all about- and when you’re in the mood, there’s nothing like it. Metal helps to get through tough times when you’re pissed off and just want to get amped up.”

YOUR RECOMMENDED KORN TRACKS ‘Blind’ (from Korn) and ‘Here To Stay’ (from Untouchables).

METAL MIX TAPE - TUOMAS’ TOP (6)6(6)

CHOOSE NIGHTWISH

Equal parts epic metal and gothic symphony, Nightwish’s combination of seductive, emotional vocals and dramatic guitar melodies are like a dark embrace you never want to be freed from. They are uncommon and rare. Those unusual, unique and enchanting diamonds washed ashore by the stormy, blustering sonic ocean. Full of romantic and dreamy moments, Nightwish created their own sound long ago and continue to adapt their distinctive and bewitching style, like a score to your most vivid dreams. May their dark star be forever on the rise.

TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN - WHY DID YOU CHOOSE METAL? “Originally I couldn`t stand metal, the “hardest” stuff I could listen to was Gary Moore and Queen. I was more into Finnish pop rock & classical music. The Metallica show in Kansas City in `92 changed it all. I was 15 and that was the turning point for me.”

WHAT’S THE BEST KIND OF METAL? “I enjoy almost all the styles, from the traditional thrash to atmospheric metal, from black metal to power metal. The only genres I’m struggling with is grind core and death metal. The latest album I bought was actually Cannibal Corpse’s Torture so I’m giving it a shot, haha. It all comes down to good songs and atmosphere, not the genre boundaries.”

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO CHOOSE METAL? “Because of its sincerity. Much like jazz, metal music is pure emotion, rarely calculating and immensely diverse!”

YOUR RECOMMENDED NIGHTWISH TRACKS The songs ‘Gethsemane’ (from Oceanborn), ‘Dark Chest Of Wonders’ (from Once) and ‘Storytime’ (from Imaginaerum).

From: Kitee, Finland Formed: 1996 Current line up: Tuomas Holopainen (keys), Emppu Vuorinen (guitar), Jukka Nevalainen (drums), Marco Hietala (bass), Anette Olzon (vocals) Label: Roadrunner Web: nightwish.com
