Choral and Organ Scholarships

ST PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL CHORAL AND ORGAN SCHOLARSHIPS ARE INTENDED TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM OF LITURGICAL MUSIC AT ST PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE CATHEDRAL CHOIR. THE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE ALSO OFFERED TO ASSIST STUDENTS WITH THEIR STUDIES, AND THE AWARD OF SCHOLARSHIPS IS RESTRICTED TO FULL-TIME STUDENTS.

NOTE: A separate scholarship scheme exists for the Cathedral Singers. Eligibility To be eligible for the award of Organ or Choral Scholarships, applicants must be enrolled as full-time students. Choral and Organ Scholarship holders are expected to become members of the St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir (men and boys) as countertenors, tenors or basses. Application and Selection Applicants are to complete the St Patrick’s Cathedral Choral/Organ Scholarship Application Form. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an audition and an interview, normally held in February each year. The audition will include a sight-reading test, and the performance of one piece of solo (or choral) music of the candidate’s choice. Applicants who have already been a member of the St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir may be granted exemption from the audition and interview, but, must complete the St Patrick’s Cathedral Choral/Organ Scholarships Application Form. Duration of the Scholarship Each scholarship is awarded initially for one year. Scholarship recipients will be eligible to continue holding scholarships in subsequent years, provided that they continue to satisfy eligibility requirements. Payment of the Scholarship Successful recipients will be advised by the Director of Music, St Patrick’s Cathedral. Payment will be made by cheque in two installments, usually in June and December.

Other Opportunities for Adult Singers at St Patrick’s Cathedral

In addition to these Choral and Organ Scholarships, the Cathedral music program provides the following opportunities for adult singers: CATHEDRAL CANTORS Cantors sing on a professional basis regularly at most of the weekend Masses at the Cathedral, and on other special occasions. The Cathedral Cantors are generally professionally-trained male and female singers. They exercise a prominent leadership role within the liturgical life of the Cathedral. CATHEDRAL CHOIR LAY-CLERKS A limited number of paid lay-clerk positions are available in the Cathedral Choir. These are adult leadership positions within the choir, reserved for experienced musicians, and have sometimes been held by former Choral Scholars. ST PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL SINGERS The Cathedral Singers sing regularly at the 6.30pm Mass on Sundays, rehearsing immediately beforehand at 5.00pm. Membership is open to adult male and female singers, and is subject to an audition. A good level of sight-reading ability is expected. Some scholarships in the Cathedral Singers are available for students enrolled at Australian Catholic University.
