Preparing for WorshipWelcome to Christ Church! It is such a joy to worship together in this holy place: to pray, to give thanks, to hear God’s word together and to receive Jesus, present in broken bread. The Cathedral Singers lead our worship today. While we rejoice to worship in our cathedral, we continue to pray with those who gather at home, worshipping with us in spirit and continuing to be united with us in prayer.

In this Christmas season – the traditional ‘twelve days of Christmas’ lasting from December 25th to January 6th – we rejoice that Jesus came among us to share our human life as ‘God with us.’

Please pay attention to Covid risk mitigation measures and please do ask the vergers if you are unsure. There is much that is different from our “normal” practice, The chalice will not be offered to the congregation; the sacrament of Holy Communion is received fully in the bread alone. We will all maintain social distancing at all times, except for the moment of giving the Communion bread. Please make sure you wash or sanitise your hands when asked to do so, and please don’t touch or hug anyone who isn’t part of your household, especially at the Peace.

Despite all the difficulties of this time, we know that God is present here and with us forever. We are very grateful to you for being gracious to us and to one another as we all seek to navigate these new waters. May God bless you as we worship together.

The Liturgy of the WordPlease sit.

    First ReadingEphesians 1:3–14 (NRSV)

A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Ephesians.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Reader This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Please stand. The Choir sings the Gospel Acclamation and the Deacon brings the Book of the Gospels in procession to the Crossing, to be read from among the people.

    Gospel ReadingJohn 1: 6–18 (NRSV)

Deacon Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory to you, O Lord.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. The true light was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” ’) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

Deacon This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

    The Creed

President Let us declare our faith in God

All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Now the holly bears a berry as white as the milk,And Mary she bore Jesus, who was wrapped up in silk: And Mary she bore Jesus our Saviour for to be, And the first tree that’s in the greenwood, it was the holly. Holly! Holly! And the first tree that’s in the greenwood, it was the holly!

Now the holly bears a berry as green as the grass,And Mary she bore Jesus, who died on the cross: And Mary…

Now the holly bears a berry as black as the coal,And Mary she bore Jesus, who died for us all: And Mary…

Now the holly bears a berry, as blood is it red,Then trust we our Saviour, who rose from the dead: And Mary…

Words: traditional Cornish Christmas carolMusic: John Rutter (b. 1945)

President Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

President Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.

President Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.

    The Choir sings the Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy,Lord God of hosts:heaven and earth are full of thy glory.Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.

Blessed is he that comethin the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

  • 12

    President Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

President And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

  • 13

All Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.
