Sea Symphony Ralph Vaughan Williams Here we are in the wake of our sensational joint concert with Harpenden Choral Soci- ety, A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams. The choir sang their hearts out to produce a most amazing performance. The audience were cap- tivated by the sheer volume of the choir and orchestra and the story telling and emotions evoked by the music and the libretto. We engaged the orchestral services of Kings Sinfonietta and what with them numbering circa 45, the choir circa 130 and the excellent acoustic of the Coptic Church, the sound was unbelievable. Huge thanks to everyone who had a part in the organisation of what was a superb concert. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed The Requiem Mass in D minor, K. 626 in Vienna in 1791, and it was left un- finished at the composer's death on 5 December the same year. A com- pletion dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who had commissioned the piece for a Requiem service to commemorate the anniversary of his wife's death. Süssmayr later claimed the Sanctus and Agnus Dei as his own. Walsegg probably intended to pass the Re- quiem off as his own composition, as he is known to have done with other works. This was frustrated by a public benefit performance for Mozart's widow Constanze who was responsible for a number of stories surrounding the composition of the work, including the claims that Mozart received the commission from a mysterious messenger who did not reveal the commissioner's identity, and that Mozart came to believe that he was writing the requiem for his own funeral.
