Argyle is located in the remote and stunning East Kimberley region of Western Australia 阿盖尔地处西澳大利亚偏远、风景壮阔的东金伯利地区

• The East Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild places. Dotted with canyons, rivers, waterfalls, mountains and unusual rock formations, it is dramatic and full of vivid colours. Temperatures reach 43 degrees celcius and as the sun moves overhead in the searing heat the ancient rocks magically change colour from pink to red.

• Approximately 1.6 billion years ago carbon atoms 150 kilometers below the earth’s surface came under immense forces of heat and pressure. The atoms combined and crystallised and the volcanic activity melted the rock and forced it to erupt on the surface.

A chance discovery unearthed a hidden treasure一个偶然的机会发现了深埋地下的宝藏

• The geological “pipe” of lamproite rock that is the source of Argyle’s diamonds was discovered in 1979 after a geologist in the exploration team spotted a diamond embedded in an anthill near a creek. After tracing the creek back to its source, a rich diamond deposit was found and the Argyle Diamond Mine had been discovered.

• Argyle’s traditional owners, the Mirriwong / Gija people, believe that long ago, in the Dreamtime (the creation of all sacred things) a beautiful fish was hunted until it became trapped in a sacred women’s area called Barramundi Gap. In its pursuit, the fish’s scales fell away to become diamonds.

The open pit mine – redefining the word ‘big’露天矿– 规模宏伟• Argyle’s open pit mine has produced more than 800 million carats of rough diamonds over the last 25 years

• At two kilometres long and one kilometre wide it covers an area of almost 300 hectares

• From 9 million tonnes of ore and dirt 20 million carats of rough diamonds can be extracted

• Shovels dig ore from the pit 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The material is loaded onto trucks that take it to the primary crusher. Each truck’s six tyres, which are three meters in diameter, cost approximately A$45,000 each
