What is a Computer?•An electronic device, operating under the

control of instructions stored in its own memory.

Produces and stores results

Processes data into informationConveys meaning and isuseful to people

Accepts dataCollection of unprocessed items

The Component of a Computer

•Hardware is the electric, electronic, and mechanical components

•The components includes:▫Input devices▫Output devices▫System unit▫Storage device▫Communication devices

Page 6: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Input Devices

• Hardware use to enter data and instruction into a computer

Page 7: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Five widely used Input Devices are:

▫Keyboard (contains keys you press to enter data into a computer)

▫Mouse (allows you to control movement of the pointer and make selection)

▫Microphone (allows you to speak into the computer)

▫Web cam (digital video camera that allow you to create movies or take pictures and store them on the computer.)

▫Scanner (converts printed material into a form the computer can use)

Page 8: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Output Devices

•Any hardware component that conveys information to one or more people.

Page 9: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Three Commonly Used Output Devices

▫Printer (produce text and graphics on a physical medium, paper)

▫Monitor (displays text, graphics and videos on a screen)

▫Speaker (allow you to hear music, voice and other audio-sound)

Page 10: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

System Unit

•A case that contain the electronic components of the computer that are used to process data▫Circuitry of the system unit is part of or is

connected to a circuit board called the motherboard

Page 11: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

What are two main components on the motherboard?

ProcessorAlso called a Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The electronic component that interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate the computer

MemoryConsists of electronic components that store instructions waiting to be executed and data needed by those instructions

Page 12: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Storage

•Hold data, instructions and information for future use.▫Storage Media - where computer keeps

data, instruction and information▫Storage Device – records (writes) and/or

retrieves (reads) items to and from storage media

Page 13: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Examples of Storage Media

•USB flash drive ▫portable storage device▫Small and lightweight ▫Can hold four billion characters

•Hard Disk▫Holds more that 320 billion characters ▫Enclosed in an airtight, sealed case▫Two types (portable and house inside the

system unit)

Page 14: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Examples of Storage Media

• Optical Disc – flat, round, portable metal disc with a plastic coating▫ Three types of Optical Disc

CD’s – holds from 650 million to 1 billion character

DVD – can store two full length movies or 17 billion characters

Blue Ray Discs – 46 hours of standard video, 100 billion characters

Page 15: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Examples of Storage Media

• Memory Cards – used in mobile devices such as digital cameras

Page 16: Chp 1 – Introduction to Computer Section 1-3. A World of Computers What is computer literacy (digital literacy)? p. 4-5 Fig. 1-1 Next Current knowledge

Communication Devices

•Enables a computer to send and receive data, instruction and information to and from one or more computers or mobile devices

•Most widely use communication device-Modem

•Occurs over cable, telephone lines, cellular radio networks, satellites, and other transmission media
