A New Sort of Bible Reading Plan By Wes McAdams
My sermon this morning is about reading through the Bible next year, and I will hand out a plan that I use. However, you might be interested in this one. DR
I need a better way to read the Bible this year. And if you know me, you know I be-lieve in reading through whole books of the Bible in one sitting. So, the following is my Bible reading plan for the new year. It may seem a bit daunting at first, but think about it this way, follow-ing this plan makes it so that you only have to set aside a few h o u r s e a c h week to read. And if we stick to this plan, we’ll be done by the end of September.
The idea be-hind this reading schedule is to set aside a few hours on a particular day each week to read a book of the Bible in one sitting. This outline follows the Hebrew structure for the
Old Testament, which means some of the books (like 1 and 2 Kings) are combined into one book. You could choose to read those on multiple days to make the readings more manageable.
I have not included the book of Psalms in this reading for two reasons:
First, it would be very difficult to read it in one sitting
Second, I plan to read from the Psa lms da i ly throughout the
year. There is obvious-ly a lot of “wiggle
room” with this schedule. If you miss
a week or two, it’s fine, you can catch up. There
are lots of easy weeks which only require a few minutes of reading. You could easily combine weeks and be done sooner.

Pray for Bryan Archer; he is going to be having a quadruple by-pass on January 2nd. He is 88 years old so there are many risks. Church History (Christian History Institute) 1876: Hymnwriter P.P. Bliss died in a fiery train wreck, when a bridge failed and his train plunged into a ravine. He had written many notable hymns, including “Hallelujah, What a Savior!” and “Almost Persuaded.” It will be remarked that the night before his death he sang, “I’m going home To-morrow.”
Do You Avoid Thinking? “There is no expedient to which a man will not resort to avoid the real labor of thinking.” –Sir Joshua Reynolds
Our Job “Our job is to love others with-out stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is
not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy if anything can.” –Thomas Merton
Reading “Reading well is one of the great pleasures that solitude can afford you because it is, at least in my experience, the most healing of pleasures.” –Harold Bloom
“To read good books is like holding a conversation with the most eminent minds of past centuries and, moreover, a stud-ied conversation in which these authors reveal to us only the best of their thoughts.” –René Descartes
“Reading is not an operation performed on something inert but a relationship entered into with another vital being.” –Clifton Fadiman
“The use of our read-ing is to aid us in thinking.” –Edward Gibbon
“It’s called ‘reading.’ It’s how people install
new software into their brains.” –Randy Glasberben
“No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting.” –Lady Mary Wortley Montagu
“Study has been my sovereign remedy against the worries of life. I have never had a care that an hour’s reading could not dis-pel.” –Baron Charles de Montesquieu
“Reading is equivalent to think-ing with someone else’s head instead of with one’s own.” –Arthur Schopenhauer
“Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doc-trine…Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evi-dent to all.” –Paul (1 Timothy 4.13, 15)
