The CHALLENGE of Africa

God’ Solution to Save the World "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. (Matt. 28:18-20)

Special 8-Page Issue for September and October As a boy growing up in Memphis, I remember occasions when a missionary would come to visit our congregation. It was always an enjoyable time for me as I listened attentively to the missionary describe the works and events they experienced. The pictures were intriguing. I had never been to those places that seemed so distant and foreign. I wondered why the missionary speaking looked so thin. In my young and naïvely impressionable mind, I imagined that they had not been eating too well. After all, they were missionaries in a foreign country where people ate insects, worms, snakes, cats and green slimy stuff, so I thought. Being thin, therefore, fit the mental picture imprinted in my mind. It was only later when I began making such trips myself that I realized missionaries ate basically the same things I ate here at home. Oh yes, if you want to eat bugs you can probably find people who will serve you some. And I have been known to take the little smelly fish off my bowl of rice! In my travels visiting churches and giving presentations, I wonder what little boy or girl out in the audience might be listening to the report and captured by the pictures. Will they one day be given the opportunity to go to a foreign mission field for the cause of Christ? What impression about the Lord’s command to take the gospel to the world and make disciples, are we in the Lord’s

church making on our young people? Are we creating dreams in these impressionable minds that will one day take our places deciding about the church’s future and evangelistic duties? Several of you reading this newsletter have been to Chimala and know how foreign mission work can get in your blood. You have seen the hundreds of people whose lives are touched by the mission’s influence every day. Without going yourself, the next best thing we can do to help you understand is write about Chimala in our publication. In the tradition of Chimala newsletters of the past, we are presenting in this issue the larger eight-page edition of the Challenge of Africa. This format allows us much more space to inform you of the great works that are occurring at the Chimala Mission and the current needs. As you can imagine, running a mission with 700 children and over 200 employees working at the preaching school, hospital, schools, and estate is quite a colossal task and expense. The difference in this particular issue is we decided to combine the months of September and October into one newsletter to save overall publication costs. Moreover, it allows us to make a big push towards informing you the readers of the current status and needs of the mission. We hope you will feel informed and moved to help. Embrace Mercy and Truth Let not mercy and truth forsake

you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your

heart, And so find favor and high es-

teem In the sight of God and man.

– Proverbs 3.3–4 Wear what you want others to wear, that is be the kind of per-son that you want others to be with you, treating them as you wish for them to treat you. Two of those qualities to wear as clothing are mercy and truth. Deal with people in truth, but also show them mercy, for you know that you also want people to do the same with you. What is good for you is good also for others. If you make mercy and truth part of who you are, you will find both God and man treating you as you wished to be treated.

Why Some People Hate You They hate in you what they do not have or what they have not become.

Helping People “We cannot get people out of wrong by engaging in wrong with them. No one has to drink with a drunkard in order to cure him of his habit” (F. B. Sryley, Gospel Advocate, March 27, 1930).

Hold Your Tongue You know there are times to hold your tongue, but there are times when you need to make an extra effort to hold it, such as when someone has hurt you.

Marshall Keeble on Baptism “A man is not saved and then baptized. A woman doesn’t wash clothes because they are already clean. I've seen a lot of smart women, but not that smart. She washes the clothes because they’re dirty. Man is baptized because he’s dirty and

needs to be clean.” As Ananias said to Saul of Tarsus: “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22.16).

Winning vs. Losing “The difference between win-ning and losing is most often not quitting.” –Walt Disney “And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines had gathered together into a troop where there was a piece of ground full of lentils. So the people fled from the Philistines. But he stationed him-self in the middle of the field, defended it, and killed the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory” (2 Samuel 23.11–12).

Call on the Name of the Lord O Lord, I call upon your name because I need you desperately in my life! (Based on Gen 4.26.)
