WELCOME

The Service of Lessons and CarolsCreated by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1880 and later adopted and expanded by King’s College, Cambridge, this service tells the story of the fall of humanity and the promise of the Messiah as told in nine short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of carols and hymns. The Book of Occasional Services contains an Advent Lessons and Carols format based on this historic service which is the service we will follow for this Advent Celebration. The Readers for the Lessons are prescribed and include a child or youth, a chorister, a parishioner, Senior Warden, Canon, Dean and concluding with the Bishop.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Christ Church Cathedral for this evening of Advent Lessons and Carols. Founded on May 31, 1822 in what was then a western frontier town, this historic cathedral stands as the oldest house of worship in

Louisville. The original structure was completed in 1824. As the Cathedral we are the seat of the Bishop of Kentucky and a resource to its congregations. As a house of prayer for all people this Cathedral intends to strive for justice and peace among all people, respecting the dignity of every human being. We are a people gathered for worship and ministry seeking to faithfully serve Christ among the diverse communities of Louisville by our inclusive example of love. We hope this evening will be a blessing to you in this holy season and I invite you to join us for Sunday worship in the New Year.

Carols Service. I could not be more pleased that you are here to share this evening with us and trust it is a meaningful time

during a busy season. At the Cathedral, we reflect great musical diversity

throughout the year, with special intention on supporting living composers. Tonight we are pleased to present a premiere

of chorister Matthew Wetmore’s “Ave Maria.” Matt is a bass in our choir and a student at University of Louisville, I hope you will

take time to greet him and thank him for his contribution. We also share British composer’s music Bob Chilcott and John Tavener as well as twentieth century American composer Arthur Jennings. The timeless selections from Messiah and the concerto grosso movements by Handel and other carols continue to connect us to the great canon of composers who have provided music through the centuries. This also marks the first season we’ve had the privilege of using our wonderful Wissinger organ, donated by Jack and Patti Dunn, Jackson, New Hampshire. We continue to give thanks to them for their generosity. I wish you every joy this season and hope this brief moment of music will bring you closer to those you love and to the beauty of this season.
